Absolutely brilliant fielding at the most difficult position in the field. Eknath Solkar was the best ever fielder - no helmets - can't imagine how he practiced to have such great reflexes and catching skills. Keep watching -

Eknath Solkar, besides opening the bowling and batting in the middle order took some unbelievable catches at forward short leg. Unfortunately, those days the telecast was not that clear, as is now. Some of his outstanding catches won test matches for India. That apart, the indian spinners of that era, owe a good number of their wickets to the great Eknath Solkar. Shorn of proper protective gear, he boldly stood as closely as possible to the batsmen and grabbed even half chances

Interesting that Knott didn't wait for the umpire's decision and walked which you very rarely see as many bat/pad appeals are turned down. I'd like to think that Knott felt that such a fabulous catch should have it's reward.

Actually the catch of Alan Knott off Venkataraghavan was extraordinary as people who minutely analysed the entire sequence would have noticed. After the ball left bowler Venkataraghavan, Alan Knott was preparing to play forward defensive stroke. Solkar anticipated the stroke and moved forward diagonally sideways towards backward short-leg, thereby narrowing the angle as also distance between him and the point where ball was likely to land and took the catch further diving forward. Actually it would not have been a catch for any other fielder except that extraordinary and the only one Solkar.

The great Solkar always watched for the batsman's leg movement as he prepared to face the bowler and predicted his short. This is what he told Mr. Dwarkanath Sanzgiri who mentioned this in his column.

@Arshad Rana ,in those days Indian team was in very critical situation , w/o fast bowlers, 4 slow spinners in every matches, team w/o openers , gavasker w/o permanent opening partner played for many years changing with chetan chauhan, parthsarthi sharma, WK farooq engineer, gaiekwad, sidhu, srikant, etc, many. May be Solker played his last test as "night watchman", retired with very poor batting record .😹ram ram.
