EGO 21" 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Single Stage Snow Blower Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

People often tell us we have the best job in the world when we tell them we test tools. Really, it's more of a goal to inform people about tools and the capabilities. In this case, working to give everyone a reliable and accurate show of performance and runtime of the Ego Power+ 21" 56-Volt Snow Blower in august was a real challenge. Our testing needed to be much more than an unboxing and we defiantly did not want to follow what has been done before by blowing saw dust. Our goal was to show the true capabilities to people who might buy this unit in preparation for snow this winter. We did not want guessing. Our goal was a video that was able to show everyone exactly what to expect from this purchase that most will consider to be large.
First, the features and technology in this snow blower are awesome. This is the first tool from EGO that will run on a single battery or also capable of running off two batteries. EGO calls this technology Peak power and it is software that is capable of detecting the size of the batteries in the snow blower. Obviously, the larger the battery, or batteries, the better it will perform. We found that there is little difference between running the unit with a 7.5Ah single battery or two 5.0Ah batteries, but all of our testing were done with the two 5.0Ah batteries that came in the kit.
The largest benefit from a battery operated snow blower is the lack of pull starting, lack of buying gas, lack of changing oil and a few other issues that can be frustrating. The battery powered unit will run as long as the batteries are charged. It's also simple enough that it leaves little confusion as to how to operate the unit. Along with simplicity, there is a speed controller for the paddle to slow it down in tight or awkward areas.
The intake and area where the snow in brought into the unit and sent to the chute is all 8 gauge powder-coated metal. This is a big change over other battery operated units on the market and a huge selling point for us. Let's be real, a snow blower is really a small battering ram used to chip away at piles of snow left at the end of your driveway. The last thing we want to do is use cold plastic as our hammer to break up ice chunks. The scraper is plastic, but is also a wear item and designed to be replaceable. The rubber on the paddles is also a wear item and easily replaced.
Since this unit is belt driven and it is protected by a computer, there is no need for a shear pin on the paddles. Of you were to run into a newspaper or other item under the snow, the voltage draw from the batteries would spike and the computer would shit the unit down. If the unit did not shut down fast enough, the belt would slip, protecting the snow blower from damage.

If I had a larger area to cover I'd want one with bigger wheels than this. However I had this running for an hour before the batteries started to wear out. I highly recommend this blower!

This is my second winter with the EGO snow blower and it's great! It's compact, light and easy to maneuver. Put batteries in and off you go! I saw this video before buying and it basically sealed the deal for me, thanks! So far this winter we've received over 6 feet of snow and it's only Feb 7th! Typical snowfall is about 10 cm (about 4 inches), biggest snowfall was 28 cm (almost 12"). Never had any problems. We get wet snow, freezing rain, fluffy snow, sometimes all in the same storm. The biggest challenge was getting rid of wet heavy / slushy snow from city plow during/after flash freeze. My double lane way can fit 4 cars. I have two 5.0 batteries and they ran out just once, during biggest snowfall, when I waited to clear everything in one shot, including snow from city plow. Totally satisfied.

Thanks guys. Seriously thinking about this. I have the Ego mower and the leaf blower. I was considering buying a couple extra batteries for the mower, and I need a snowblower... Sounds like a solution to both problems here. We just moved to a new home with a driveway only 30'x50', and a limited amount of storage. We average 60" of snow each year, and usually get a 12"+ snowfall at least once a year. My only concern is the price. That's a lot to pay for something so new and basically unproven.

I've noticed that in heavy snow and wind, I get snow packing on the elevation control (the trigger control) on the exit shoot. So you may wanna watch that if you need to change the elevation from time to time. Otherwise you may wanna pick the elevation you can live with for the duration of the job....just in case the trigger freezes up. Also take care if you're cleaning snow off a lime stone patio. I learned that from doing! My blower ripped of a 1/4" - 10" x 20" layer of lime stone from one slab. I thought "Oh no...I bet I sheared something inside the blower". BUT...lucky me...the EGO just kept doing its thing. I was using two 7.5 Batteries at the time. I also wound up chewing a lot of small sticks that had blown down on the driveway before the snow hit. No problem (although I don't recommend it if you see the sticks and can pick them up before you go over them). I just did a 15' x 70' driveway plus a 30' x 60' apron plus my front sidewalk plus the two neighbor's sidewalks on either side (about 150'). Still had a lot of power left with my two 7.5's. Snow levels varied from none to about 8" (very high winds and drifting with some ice chips).

two things I'd like to note: 1. Single stage blowers are best suited for light snow, not the stuff the city plows leave behind. I'm speaking from living up north where the stuff they leave behind is three foot tall piles of ice and slush. 2.If you use your snow blower as a battering ram, you're going to break it. It's best to go at a pace the motor can handle. Lithium ion has come a long way - but put it in a 2 or 3 stage blower and make it viable for those with heavier snow - no sense in only mincing around with single stages. :)

I just bought this snowblower. I’ve used it twice , first time I did my sidewalk, driveway and my neighbours . While doing my neighbours front walk there was a leash under the snow and it got caught in the machine, flipped it over and tore an inch rip in the rubber blade. Would that be covered under the warranty? I also found it gets stuck on uneven sidewalks and is hard pushing in heaver snow .

no, it does not pull forward at all but it's light and moves through snow easily except for cracks in the sidewalk or uneven boards on wood. First impressions and a question: I used it today for the first time with 4" snow. I loved it except for ONE thing. I saw someone else say this on one of these KZread videos and it's more than true. This snowblower gets hung up on cracks very easily. You almost have to tilt the front edge up off the ground the whole time so that it doesn't get stuck constantly. That's pretty frustrating to be honest, especially when you're blowing snow off your wood board walkway! The positive side is that I did the entire driveway and the wooden walkway in 10-15 minutes....it's light and does a good job throwing snow, so as long as you're not hitting cracks, it's fantastic. I wish there was a fix to raise the platform bottom but alas, there is not., as far as I can tell, and so I'm stuck with it. It's going to be ok but that walkway is especially troublesome. The question is since it only took 15 minutes, the batteries still show green. Should I just leave them at room temp and then use them when it snows again or should I put them back in the charger after each use?

Here in Chicago, we finally got our first snow - after getting about 4" of wet warm snow, I couldn't wait any longer to give my new EGO snowblower its inaugural spin. I sold off my green works 80v snowblower this fall after I picked up the EGO. Unfortunately excitement turned to mild disappointment. The EGO hangs up on concrete edges only 1/8" high where my green works would sail over them like nothing was there. I'm wondering if there's a way I can raise the edge a slight bit so it doesn't hang up every 8' along my driveway. Also the weight of the EGO was making me miss the much lighter Greenworks. Wet snow is hard on snowblowers, but I have to say that the EGO's performance wasn't remarkably better than my old green works - I was expecting to throw this snow quite a ways, and while I do think it bested the green works, it wasn't by as much as I had hoped. So for those of you thinking the Greenworks Pro 80V isn't relevant anymore, I'd think again. While the EGO is better built, and does have more power/battery life, it is twice the money. Having been fairly satisfied with the Greenworks last year, I was hoping to be rocked by the EGO - and wasn't at least this first time.

I read your review before I bought this and I agree 100% that it gets caught up very easily on cracks and, in my case, slightly uneven boards on a wooden walkway. Other than that, I liked it very much. That will take some getting used to because you have to tilt the unit up constantly unless you're on a perfectly smooth surface. They must have done all their lab testing of this unit on smooth surfaces.

I did get used to keeping the front raised up a bit. Now that the edge is a little more broken in, i.e. A little more worn/rounded off, it doesn't seem to get hung up quite as much. I still like it. It's a good machine, but I can imagine some improvements for Gen2. More adjustability, Vertical storage like the lawn mower. I'm still glad I got it, and while it has been a mild winter so far in Chicago, I feel it has done a good job and certainly equal/better to a residential grade gas single stage.

What worries me is I'd have to buy replacement batteries down the road, and 2 of the 5 amp are $440. 2 of the 7.5 amp are $800. Would save a little bit of money on gas/oil each year, but I could buy an entirely new snowblower for just a little bit more than the 5 amp batteries, and much less than the 7.5 in 3 to 5 years.

I was just considering getting one of their lawnmowers since I need to get something I can actually physically use. I can't start a gas lawnmower, can't pull the cord hard enough, and if I happen to get it to start, I am only halfway through and the back spasms make me stop, and then I am back at trying to pull the cord. The idea of one set of batteries for both tools sounds like the ticket. I have been using a Toro 2 stroke snow thrower that I can usually start just by having the heat on in the garage for a couple of hours to trick the Toro into thinking its nice and warm outside. The battery charger needs to handle both batteries at once, but I'm sure it's another can of worms about dissimilar charges, circuitry and cost. I don't think you're following exactly what I'm saying about the batteries. I'm saying that in order to avoid designing and building around scenarios where the user inserts unequally charged batteries (not intend use, but a possible scenario), they decided to limit it to one at a time (which is Very disturbing, to me, drawing out the process). In a nut shell, the batteries would "rapidly" try to balance voltage. BTW, nice videos/ demonstrations on these.

Great job on the video, thanks. I value seasonal tools like lawnmowers, snowblowers at about $100/yr meaning if I pay $600 I expect to get 6 GOOD yrs out of the tool without having to invest much (other than routine maintenance). Performance looks good but I don't think batteries are going to last 6yrs at peak performance. So after a few yrs you will likely have to invest another $400 for new batteries. Maybe if they gave me a new set of batteries after a few yrs I would consider (not sure what battery warranty is) OR if they allowed registered owners a ONE TIME new set of batteries for $100?? My current snow blower (Toro CCR1000) was bought used on craigslist for $130, its on its third year and still works well but its gonna need new rubber paddles (next yr) which is normal wear/tear. Think if I buy new I'll spend comparable $ on a Honda 720 which has proven track record (Honda engines) and will last 6yrs plus. I REALLY want to like this concept. Battery would be so much easier for wife/kids (ME in the long run...LOL) to use but the benefit/cost ratio just isn't there yet for cordless snow blowers...more specifically the batteries.

My other EGO tools are great so I didn’t give a great deal of scrutiny while looking at the snowblower at Home Depot. In fact I was so sure it would be great that i threw the box away (Home Depot is great and still took it back). Had I looked at it closely I would’ve recognized the placement of the auger. EGO 21" 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Single Stage Snow Blower is a toy! The manufacturers never report the power of the unit, they only mention the volts. The volts alone don't make the power. In electrical terms, the power is a product of volts and amps. The electric motors used in the cordless snowblowers or lawn mowers are of a fractional power ~500 watts only. For cleaning the snow you'll need a lot more, like 10 times more power or around 5000 watts. All the commercials about the cordless snowblowers are done with very small amount of snow or for very short action time simply because of the luck of power. My neighbor who likes cordless devices is got one and he hates it. With 2 batteries he can't even finish his sidewalk covered with only 2" of snow, he's got to wait till the 2nd battery charges for the 2nd time to finish it. So much for the driveway!

How many days would I use with this rice cooker? 3) Most ppl would need a self driven blower, which this isn't(?), but if it is, those tires are just crap on ice. I use low pressure rubbers with chain (my driveway has a 12% incline). 4) Test this thing in real life and you will see that the technology is premature 5-10 years before its fully operational. Stijf must work for Ariens or something. This EGO snowthrower looks fine for the majority of snowfalls in most places in the U.S. Most people are aware that heavy snowfalls must be handled in stages, every 6 or 8 inches and you clear it. Recharge the batteries and go back out and do it again, if necessary. I don't have a problem with that. You'd have to have a large, expensive 2-stage to wait until 12-16 inches have fallen and then go out and expect to have a great time with it. This is a reasonably priced, state of the art product meant for light and medium duty, with ample convenience included. He's right about something, however. That in 5 or 10 years it will be "all the way" there.....much better. No shocker there. That's technology. I haven't used mine yet but am looking forward to doing so. I'll report back. If I had the room and the inclination to spend $1500, I'd get a 2nd snow thrower and it would be a big, old 2-stage beast for those massive blizzards. Those machines are great for that, not so much for typical snowfalls.
