Ego SNT-2800 Snow Blower, Should You Get One? Depends

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The new (as of this week) EGO 28" two stage snow blower is released. It has many changes and improvements over the previous 24" one. No snow yet but I got my hands on one and discuss those changes along with the rational for going with electric this time around.

Fantastic, I will keep an eye out for your video. Here in North East Ohio our winters are generally mild compared to where you are as we do not get hit directly with strong nor’easters. Occasionally though, lake effect driven blizzards will strike and drop significant precipitation. I’m interested to see how these units hold up when it does come down thick and heavy.

Thanks for the review. I have owned like 15 different ego products for about 4 years and I add a couple new products every year and I just bought there snow blower last year. I only bought the single stage because I didn't think I needed the 2 stage. But I have realized now that I think the 2 stage would be a good buy because of the extra 3 or 7 inches depending on which model I decide to get and the self propelled feature. I am probably going to get one before this snow season. I live in Cincinnati so I still have some time but this was a really good review, so thank you. I almost guarantee you wont be disappointed in your Giant new EGO, and switching from gas to Electric!

This has to be one of the best videos in this segment that I have seen. I have a 25 year old Husqvarna 27" beast and nobody has been able to convince me to go green. I live in New England like you and I can't risk doing the swap. This review has come the closest because of the 28". 4" doesn't sound like much difference but when you have a large driveway, that difference adds up to much time saved. I anxiously await your opinions of how it does on 3' high mountains of plowed stuff at the end of the driveway and I know that you know what I mean by that. That is the only thing that will sway me. I am getting older as well and losing the joy that once came with this task. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video - I feel same as you. I have a 15 yr old gas blower - it too has never been winterized and barely maintained but it starts every fall in 1 or 2 pulls. Seems like a wast of nearly $3,000 Canadian dollars to switch to electric - but I am a fan of electric OPE. I switched my mower to electric last year and very happy with it - and sold my 2 gas mowers. Leaning towards waiting 2 more years and hopefully the price will drop.

Great perspective. I've watched a lot of comparisons, especially before I bought last year's 24" and nobody mentioned the lower quality of modern gas blowers. As for smelling like gas, it's likely a matter of the age of those blowers too. I inherited one I assume was from the 80s, where you had to pre-mix gas and oil. I didn't mind but that definitely led to the smell, and in general it just burned oil because that's part of why it needed to continually be remixed. I didn't enjoy it and didn't use it as much as I could have. Last year it was a joy to blow out the back lane and sidewalk for 3 or 4 houses on either side of me. Got me the exercise I used to by shoveling but without the same risk of injury.

Only once (winter of 1982-1983) did it last over three days; then it lasted almost two weeks. That was bad miserable but my parents had help and we did not lose any cattle before, during or after the weather event. (We raised registered Texas longhorn cattle.). It will be interesting to see what you think of the batteries when they get cold. Thank you, fingers crossed on this one from me also. One thing I'm not concerned about is cold batteries that are lithium. They'll be charging in the house and while in use they will heat up a lot. In fact when I bring them back in it will take up to 30 minutes for the charger's fan to cool them down enough to begin charging.

Thanks for a good assessment and your logic/reasoning for replacing your Ariens. I too have an Ariens but it's the 27 inch 927 with the 9 HP Tecumseh Snow King. It's 15+ years old, has always started and does a decent job with snow removal but it's a beast to deal with. I turned 70 this year and though I'm in perfect health and very active I don't look forward to using it, especially the noise which requires me to ear ear plugs. I also don't enjoy oil changes at this stage of my life or storing gas with stabilizer and having some quantity left over to dispose of after the season. For all those reasons I just ordered the 24 inch model with four 10 AH batteries and two 700 watt chargers. I've been looking at the 24 inch for the past few years but the previous 7.5 AH battery version held me back from buying because I feared they'd be marginal for my 2000 sf drive and walk in SE Wisconsin. The entire package was the price of four 10 AH batteries so it's like getting the blower and charges for free. I figure two 10 AH batteries should be adequate and if so, I'll probably sell the other two along with one charger. Now I'm anxious for it to snow (what the hell am I saying 😜).

I had a 26 inch 8 1/2 hp troy built. I went with a 30 inch 10 hp. I have a very steep driveway and I honestly do not think the electric will work well for me. We have been without snow in northern Arizona and we’re almost to Christmas. We got 165 inches of snow last year between New Year’s and March, so there is still a possibility that we are going to get some. I have no doubt that the performance will equal or exceed my Ariens. Just like the performance of EV cars out weigh even muscle cars. Electric has a lot of instant torque. But it's the longevity of the batteries and longevity of the hardware that can be a stickler. I agree though with a really heavy snow area either a gas model or at least a gas model backup might be best. Today in Maine, just before Christmas, we've got 60 mph wind, heavy rain and temperatures that will reach 60 degrees. My world is turned a bit upside down.

My wife, after seeing the neighbor using one to clear her driveway, had to have her down battery powered snowblower. It's a Greenworks, not EGO, and it's only 16" wide but I will say, it works great on light snow. It's 40V. I have an Ariens gas snowblower but for a few inches of fluff, this thing is so handy! Hangs on the wall out of the way. She mainly wanted it because it's light enough she can carry it up and onto the deck in back. I was skeptical at first but I must admit these things do have their place.

This was pretty informative thank you. I've got a 25+ year old Troy-Built gas right now but at 300+ lb it's getting too unwieldy for us to use as we age; my son just moved out this year so we need something lighter. The lack of a gas motor makes electric hugely appealing, and the Ego units are light enough that my wife should be able to handle it. Since she works at a bakery and has to be there at 5am this is important. The way I look at it buying any new snowblower, gas or electric, is going to be a crap shoot. Quality seems to have taken a nose dive compared to the units from 25-30 years ago. So I may as well roll the dice on an electric, at least then there isn't a motor to maintain. But we only have a 6 car driveway so it's fairly small.

Great video and you go over the unit very well. I have the EGO 24" 2 stage and I am picking up the 28" today. One thing about these snowblowers...my 24" will run about 30-40 mintes with the two 7.5 ah batteries. But, you can move snow faster than a gas unit. So in reality, you are doing the job faster. Also, the weight of the EGO is much lighter than a gas unit of the same size. The EGO is far easier to maneuver than a gas unit simply because of the lighter weight. The lights are REALLY bright and do an excellent job. I have had my 24" for a bit over 2 years with zero problems. I also have had several other EGO products for many years. Great video. I think you’ll be happy with your decision. I had a small little Toro with a great Tecumsa engine that lasted me 20 years. Always started. Then it didn’t sadly. I “upgraded” to a Troy Bilt. Auger cable fell off inside the unit in the first big snow. Said no way, gave it back to the dealer for a “heavy duty” Toro with one of their crap new engines. Started rusting out on me the first year. Terrible build quality for the price and past reputation. Got a 24” Ego the first year they came out. It has been a real work horse despite Wisconsin winters with gravel driveways. Considering upgrading to the 28” as a primary and using the 24” at our cabin, rather than dragging it back and forth in the winter. I have no hesitation buying another one. Besides, always nice to add a battery to my collection for my other devices. I have more Ego products than I’d care to admit. Have been a bit hit or miss with batteries, but Ego is good about supporting them if something goes wrong in the first 3 years. Good luck and hope to see a positive video once you get some snow. Not what I expected at all. I also use the batteries in the commercial backpack leafblower they sell. I haven't raked in awhile. Here in Minnesota we get what I like to call level 3 snow. HARD AS ROCK!!! I myself tried a battery powered snowblower. It was a snow joe. Here's the problem I had with it. Battery powered snowblowers don't have much weight to them. So if you want to dig in to compact snow it's not gonna happen. Now yes if I snowblow the day of the storm it will work. However!! Be aware you are using batteries. Their have been much more fires these days from batteries getting to hot. Here in Minnesota their was an electric bike that caught fire and burned down a grocery store. Therefore be careful when charging. After the snow joe I bought a Honda. Now I use truefuel and have never had another problem again. Tracks and massive weight it just plows through the snow. 👍

Yes, in your situation you may be right. This blower weights in at 205 lbs with batteries. Still lighter than my Ariens by 70 lbs. I have a a sun joe pressure washer. I'm assuming you have their 2 stage blower. I don't think its in the same category. I looked at a few of the brands and nothing else interested me. the snowjoe's weight is much less too. and it's a smaller blower. The new EGO is about 10hp size. The Sunjoe one is about 5-8hp equivalent. I looked at Toro took a regular blower and made and electric motor/battery combination to replace the gas engine but lots of wasted energy using the same gearing/belt mechanism. Not needed with electrics. Time will tell with this one. I'm planning on a comprehensive review complete with quantitative metrics when we get a first decent snowfall. I'll find out then! I already told the wife, 'this could be a big mistake'. We'll see. Thnx for the comment btw.

Regarding the battery fires, EGO uses a BMS (Battery Management System) that is built-in to the battery whereas, e-bike batteries do not. The benefit of a BMS is they'll automatically shut off if they get too hot and when stored, they'll automatically discharge to the optimal storage charge. This significantly reduces the chance for EGO batteries to go up in flames.

I bought the ego 24 because my garage is very very small and a 28 could potentially scratch the side of car if im not careful when i park. .. the 24 inch is more forgiving. But there is something i realized after i brought the ego home. It is dam loud! I though they were quieter than this.. but apparently it is full electic motorized thus the high pitch sound that comes from it. I needed a quiet blower because my neighbour hate when people make anykind of noise outside legal hours . My neighbour even called the cops, the fireman, and the city inspector on me in the past.. nothing happened to me other than it is just annoying to live next to such neightbour. Even the guy living on the otherside (the house next to my neighbour) has its share of issue with this neighbour,.. so anyway, i was looking for something more quiet than that.. im kinda disappointed the 2-stage snowblower was that loud.. my other choice is the toro .. but the toro is an hybrid. Not fully electric. That means it is very very quiet compared to the Ego. But unfortunately it only comes in 26 inch if you want open differential.. but another issue with toro is that their battery don't seem as good as Ego battery. And Toro seems difficult to reach to have a battery replacement under warranty. And 3 years warranty on a battery is clearly not enough. Where Ego is 5yrs. If you do a quick search, tons of people are having issues with their toro battery. Which is not the case with Ego. .i still have few days to return the Ego and get the .toro instead…. Not sure what to do

I bought a new Ariens Professional almost three years ago to replace an 17 year old Ariens that ran and started every time despite NEVER having been serviced (just added gas for 17 years). I have had nothing but trouble with the new unit. On my second use in the middle of a nor’easter dropping over an inch an hour at 8 pm it started leaking gas from the over flow. That was the first of three carburetor repairs just to get through that storm. I’m on my new third carburetor and it stills randomly leaks gas. It’s always a challenge getting it started with the pull cord when it’s cold. I have resorted to using the electric start. If I can’t rely on my gas powered equipment maybe it’s time for a change.

Yes. This electric is a gamble and I'm sure it won't last as long as I'd like but I've run into the same comments from others here and on facebook pages. If I had to get a gas, or decided not to get the electric I think I'd go back and find a gently used and cared for one pre-2010 as that's when they changed the engines. Thnx for the comment.

Good points. this one comes in at about 180 lbs without the batteries. So over 200 with them. This one seems more front heavy than the older 24" one is. I'm counting on that to be a plus to keep the front down in the snow. I haven't had snow yet (forever waiting these days in So. Maine geesh) but from what I've seen and tried with the other blowers they sell, I don't see performance as being an issue. I will wait to see what run time is. If it satisfactory for my needs then that will be my litmus test. Full review with accurate numbers if we ever get a decent storm. I've got to have at least 10" to bother you guys with a review. 12-16" would be better.

The batteries are warm as they are kept inside and when in the blower the heat up and have to be cooled. The cold weather isn't an issue for them at all. In fact when you stop and put them on the charger, the charger has fans that have to cool them before the charging process can start.

As good as my old one if not better. I combined it with an Ego 850 leaf blower that I use for light snow and the car. Does a 4 car drive way, a 30 foot side walk and an equivalent 2 car patio. Lighter and more maneuverable that the Murray and no choke to forget. A 28 inch would be too big for me. I'm up in Montréal so snow is reasonable compared to other regions. Price is 2500 $ CAD plus tax, steep but they wanted to charge me 500$ to do my driveway so I'll break even in 6 years.

    7 ай бұрын

@@CraftsmanontheLake Looking forward to your future review. I owned their smaller unit which is supposed to simulate a single stage unit. I'll explain why it doesn't but the unit you are using does. With a gas single stage, the paddles grab the ground and snow. This grabbing helps pull the unit as the paddles throw the snow behind them and up the chute. The spring floating scraper bar behind the paddles prevents any snow from hitting the user. With the Ego the paddles do not touch the ground and are actually an inch or more off of the ground. The scraper bar is located in front of those paddles gathering the snow like shoveling it to them. Your basically pushing a power shovel. That scraper bar has to be replaced frequently because it scraps along the ground as a shovel does. The units paddles were slower than a gas unit which made it terrible for handling wet snow. It either clogged or threw the snow 3 feet. My property is 38 by 100, not large. I found that after just clearing the snow at the end of my driveway by the plow usually exhausted the freshly charged batteries requiring me to stop and recharge for 90 minutes. Since I did not own any additional Ego products that use the same batteries found this to be a problem. Replacement batteries from Ego are 400 dollars for a set. You owned your gas unit for over 15 years. I can assure you that the Ego unit and its batteries you are using will not last or provide the service your gas unit had.

@@joejohnson2478 You posted awhile back just seeing it now. The original single stage ego had a sort of rubber auger. It didn't fare well. The steel one though people seem to like. I've never had a single stage but can't imagine doing any sizable road road bank with one. Then again I'm in Maine. I would think that choosing a single or 2 stage wouldn't be as much about the size of the driveway, but the amount of snow. I did a followup in our first 12" blizzard. It was pretty impressive.

@@CraftsmanontheLake I will say one thing about the Ego unit that you are using in your review. It absolutely does mimic a 2 stage in every way where Ego's single stage does not. On a gas single stage. The paddles grab at the ground and snow, slightly pulling the unit, throwing the snow behind them and up the chute. It's spring loaded scraper bar, not fixed and moves, is behind the paddles. It's function is to keep the snow from going behind the unit and towards the chute. On the Ego it's paddles, whether metal or plastic do not touch the ground at all. In fact they are recessed up and into the front housing of the unit. It's fixed scraper bar rides along the floor like a shovel gathering the snow for those paddles to throw it up the chute. That scraper bar not only hits any imperfection on the ground but has to be replaced after just a few uses. The Ego single stage paddles also didn't move or rotate as fast as a gas unit which caused clogs on wet slushy snow. Your unit again mimics a gas 2 stage in every way. I also didn't have other Ego products and occasionally ran out of power just clearing what the city plow left at the end of my driveway. I would have to wait about 80 minutes to charge up both batteries to finish. I was disappointed in It's performance and really wanted to get away from using gas. My lawn mower is a Ryobi battery unit which works fine on my small lawn. It's just that snow is a completely different animal requiring more power.

Problem with battery snow blowers is not power. Its run time and charge time. You may have not much to do but usually you snowblow several times a day to keep up with the snow when a storms in. Might only have enough charge for 1.5times, maybe it didnt charge enough inbetween then you need more batteries and thise batteries are not cheap. And better off now even using the hand warmers it just drains your battery. and before you know it you should of just bought s plow for your vehicle cause this cost more than a heavy duty blower ontop of you probably might need 4batteries

If someone lived in Buffalo maybe but here, where I am in Maine, 18" is about the biggest and mostly around a foot or less. The blower, it seems to me is equivalent to my 10hp gas model. It's as large as that anyway. So, if it does the job I'm hoping it will be good. The batteries btw, cool and fully recharge in 90 minutes so If I had a multi blow storm I'd have to wait that long anyway. As far as plowing is concerned. I have an unplowable area. Good points but we've got to have good info not just anecdotal info. The electric motor is enclosed and not nearly as exposed as the friction disk mechanism of a gas blower. There are no issues with freezing of the throttles on the blowers they've had for several years now. The batteries are in no danger of fire. That's for hoverboards and other toys. The batteries are high quality and with BMS units. I have 200ah of lithium with similar configuration inside my camper. It's not an issue. The cost is an issue. They will be replaced in five years under warranty and have a potential lifespan of 10 yrs. So, I expect 8 yrs is likely. At that rate it would average out to about $125/yr. But it's the only maintenance item and fuel could be considered negligible compared to a gas model. Still. it will cost more. Thanks for the comment.

They’re essentially the same price. Btw I went to school in Orono… have you had a chance to use your new machine yet? Anxious to hear if you think it was a good gamble. Also, what are you doing for a cover? An internet search , so far it doesn’t look like anyone is selling a cover for the 28”. If I spend the big coin for one I definitely want to protect it from the elements - the sun here is the equivalent of the rust in central Maine, a real machine killer (dry rot) Anyone seeing this have experience operating the 24” and the 28”? If you do 6-16" of snow 10 times a season then either size might do but I'd opt for the 28". I think the battery's of the 24" would need recharging. The price difference is about $400. My wife is From Old Town... just outside of Orono to I know the area well. I'm in southern Maine.
