These two have contrasting styles. One's strength is the other's weakness: 1. Potting - earl 2. Safety - efren 3. Break - earl 4. Kicking - efren They even have contrasting attitudes (humility and arrogance). Yet they are the best ever to play the game!

1:05:52 - That tiny look Efren gave Earl after Earl had interrupted his run by commenting about what he thought Efren was going to do (which Earl got wrong) is the only time I saw Efren give any hint of annoyance =) and you'd need to nearly be reading micro-expressions to catch it. Efren is a king among pool players.

I remember watching this with my dad on cable tv but live broadcast on our local sports channel. As a kid I was so frustrated that Strickland was way ahead. But during the last day of the duel, Efren came back and won it like it was a 3-1 lead (Warriors). Thanks for uploading this. So many memories!

I am really amazed at how our dear legend endured the pressure of catching up 17 point lead by Ear Strickland!!! My sympathy was all with him that I pity him while watching him struggle to score. In his face, there was a chunk of hopelessness but in his heart, there was great faith and determination to fight till the end, win or lose, he would surely accept the result humbly and graciously. That is our very own champion Efren Reyes!!!!! He made us all proud to be Filipinos!!!!! God bless him more!!!!!

The next best run in this match is earls 65 ball run (video 1) without a definitive error (also a great run). Throughout this match earl averaged 3.7 errors per 50 balls pocketed. Strickland choked, pure and simple. He was a roaring lion when he was ahead, but he melted down when Efren began to make his move. An epic match for the ages! Earl's behaviour actually adds the flavour to this once-in-a-lifetime match mind you. It's like watching a movie wherein the villain was winning then the hero comes back alive and victorious at the end. Some would probably say we can see the hand of GOD behind this match. We have here also the highest quality of 9-ball pool despite the pressure-laden 3 racks before the final rack that was full of unforced errors. This should be the greatest 9-ball match if not the greatest pool match of all time. Kudos to both!

I agree. you know a man isn't exactly a gentleman when he chooses to have a go at a cameraman, or a member of the staff. those people are on the job and can't defend themselves. the fact that the commentators were well aware of strickland's propensity to lash out is also telling... if you can't handle the heat, stay clear of the kitchen. I'll never understand men who can't keep their heads. my great-grandma cared for all 12 of her children under one roof every day for more than a decade without losing her cool, and some grown men can't even play a friendly game or two without smarting off to someone. honestly...

@@davebooth7808 Well, I think he's sad because it's embarrassing, plus he lost $100k. He actually could've won the match. He's an amazing player. His skills are shocking. But his temperament is a problem, just like Efren's break is a weakness. BTW, I don't think this was Efren's best level. He's played better other times. It took him a while to settle back into his best level, at the end after the 3 days of play.

Efren Reyes, what a wonderful personality, smiles even if the going gets tough. You, Efren, deserve all the accolades you have earned in a very long sporting career. I do not remember one 'unsporting' gesture ever from the Philippine model sportsperson. To the contrary, not for the first time, Earl Strickland has shown an unnecessary ill tempered attitude - when Efren stepped up to shake hands Earl barely acknowledged the gesture, a terrible sour face during the well balanced speech at the end. You, Earl should be ashamed of yourself and rather stay away from the green felted table. You may have talent, but your sporting comportment, not just in Hong Kong some 5 years ago, but other occasions as well, leave to be desired.

Epic. The quality of play by both players was often off the charts and into genius territory. The heart shown by Efren in his legendary comeback speaks for itself. The classless moves on the part of Strickland speak for themselves as well. Efren said, "I was lucky". Self effacing, modest, with class. Strickland sharked him one time, tried to claim a foul another time, whined, bitched, pissed, moaned and ultimately gave up. It's a shame Earl is plagued by his inner demons. His game is glorious to watch, but watching him, the person, is no fun at all. In fact, it's downright ugly. I think this match sealed the deal on who was the greatest player in the world at the time of the match.

Thank you so much for posting this. Absolutely amazing match. Long but worth it. Special thanks of course to Mr. Moore and Ridgeway. Truly classy gentlemen, perfect for the sport. Efren is absolutely the GOAT. That 17-game rebound and then victory is what movies are made of. He's also a super likeable human being, so humble and calm. Efren went on to do the same thing to Sigel and then Morris, winning huge paydays. And each time it was clearly meant to be a test to determine who was the best of the best in the world. Congrats to Earl too. Despite his difficult personality his skill is truly out of this world. His struggles seem to be with his inner self and for that we wish him all the best. He has nothing to feel bad about in this epic and truly historic contest.

But after Earl's increasing fits of bad tasteless conduct, fewer and fewer clapped for him and there was a lot of silence as well. Near the end of the game you could tell the whole room was on Efren's side. I feel so sad that Earl behaved and shouted as he did. It was embarrassing.

Hegins christianstrong it is when you are 17 games down. That's means he won this segment by 20 games. And if they kept playing Efren would have destroyed him because Earl crybaby Strickland can only play when he is in the lead.

Bata Reyes is one of the few, when it comes to the shoot pool billard table. He has a good gift, his "TALENT" shoot pool. That's a good gift.

I may be the only one in the world, but I feel sorry for Strickland -- a man with his talent! -- and he has to run into a humble little guy named Reyes who just happens to be FLAT OUT THE GREATEST BILLIARDIST in HISTORY ! That's a tough act to follow.

You gotta Efren Reyes. He's humble, never talks trash or gets out of line professionally. And he's a great pool player. One of the true greats.

Commentator RE: Strickland (2:42:02): "This man has some problems." Hard to believe this is the same man who put on such a gallant demonstration of sportsmanship and class when he conceded to Efren at the conclusion of the famous "Z-shot" match in the 1995 Sands Regency Open. What happened to this guy?

true, that image of Earl holding up Efren's hand at the end of the 1995 Sands Regency 9ball open (like the referee in the end of a boxing match) will be forever in my mind

So quick to judge Earl the Pearl... Best there ever was best there will ever be. He's different than the average man and that's a reason he is so great. Love watching you play Earl. Absolute fire and tenacity at the pool table. Love watching Efren too, a shame Earl is so misunderstood.

When I used to play several hours a day basically living out of the 'Hard Times' pool hall in Long Beach, I'd play for money pretty much 80% of the time there. I figured out there are many ways to win, lots of it is mental. For example, there are people I know who are capable of multiple 9 ball rack runs, but are also these super quick shooters. They are practically running around the table to get at the next shot, because they are so so excited. Well, my capability is I can run a 9 ball rack about half the time, but my shots are usually spot on, it's always that damn position (haha, story of every pool players life right?). With that said, when I've been eagle eyeing the players around me, one of them was this super excited guy who loved to run around the table. Well, we did a race to 7, I was down 0-4, the dude ran out on me over and over again on a winner breaks format. On game 5 I caught a break as we were playing the no push rule, he forgot that and hit the ball and didn't hit anything giving me ball in hand. Yay? So I deliberately took my shots slowly, I ran half the rack, then screwed up a simple rail shot. Wellllllll HERE COMES PETER COTTONTAIL racing around the table. He made 2 balls, then missed the 8. Leaving me the 8-9 run out (oh boy 2 balls, hey its a win). Now it's 1-4, I break, I run almost half the rack (taking my time) and I crap my pants thinking he's gonna run out on me. He got up, missed. I shot, ran out. It continued like this until it was 6-5 and I got lucky and got the 9 ball on break. I think what happened was, I was outgunned seriously the guy was really above my caliber. However, my pacing messed with his fast nature and that I think cut his game 50%. The moral of this is you don't have to be as good as the other guy, but if you can mentally mess with them without trash talk you'll be surprised. haha. Earl is one of those faster paced shooters, and if you watch his games you'll see people pick up on his jack rabbit style and slow it down. Efren did that and picked him apart for the win. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Have you lost your mind??? Earl is the world's biggest sore loser of all time! That piece of crap couldn't shake hands with Efren at the end. He couldn't even crack a smile after being congratulated. He has NO CLASS at all, not even a little bit. Now he can go home and stomp his feet, have all the temper-tantrums he wishes. Good riddance!
