This man was awesome. He took a bullet about a month earlier, walks out of the hospital and smiles about it. What class and character.

Absolutely awesome. Not only were these words, but Reagan put his economic proposals into action. What was the result? The best economic recovery (at that time) since WWII, 7% and 5% economic growth in 1983 and 1984, inflation cut in half, interest rates that returned to natural levels, and an 18% increase in real incomes from 1983-1989. Greatest president in my lifetime, and one of the top 5 most effective in American history. Reagan, Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II saved western civilization for at least another 25-30 years from their times.

You know, it's a shame the first part of this video isn't shown. This was Ronnie's first appearance after being shot. When he showed up at the door of the House the place went absolutely wild for the longest cheering I ever heard - proud of a man whose bravery and good humor in adversity had endeared him to his nation. Ronald Reagan Foundation - let's show the whole tape! We want to see Ronnie being cheered as he deserved!

I was just brought to tears watching a TV special of President Reagan's dramatic brush with death, and what it revealed about his character. Don't lose heart America - there is always hope when we carry on with the inspiration of brave men like President Reagan!

Thank you ReaganFoundation for posting this historic joint session of Congress! President Reagan had been recently shot and came back calling for bi-partisanship with renewed vigor, energy and charisma than anyone half his age could have! Masterful speech. Among his best.

Economic recovery had been Reagan’s prime objective for 1981, and despite still recovering himself from an assassin’s bullet, the President moved forward with his agenda with full steam. And just as LBJ had used Kennedy’s death as a catalyst for legislative reform, Reagan did not shy away from using his own extraordinary brush with death as a platform from which to preach his message of tax reform. Just over two weeks after his discharge from hospital, President Reagan walked into a special joint session of Congress, and received a hero’s welcome from both Democrats and Republicans, who stood applauding and cheering their Lazarus-like leader. For twenty years, the Congress had witnessed every President who occupied the Executive Office being destroyed by it-JFK had been murdered, LBJ had been driven from office due to Vietnam, Nixon resigned over Watergate, and Ford and Carter had both been voted out by the people. Reagan had almost shared JFK’s tragic fate, but instead had survived. And there he stood, less than one month after the shooting, standing before them, urging them to action.

@jah0524 Yeah thats called a tax cut.. You may not think it is, but it is. To change tax rates downward less than expected is a tax cut. To that end, Obama did cut taxes by keeping the Bush tax cuts in. With his policies though, the economy is not growing with those cuts. Its all about policy, not just tax cuts.

By 1985, he realized that the reduction of taxes and loopholes too the very rich was a mistake. In that video he talks about the fact that the rich need to pay their fair share in taxes. Unfortunately, though he tried to change it back to more taxes on the rich, he failed. Instead, the next Congresses and Presidents, have exasperated the problem. This is one reason why my Reagan fan Republican husband is voting for #Bernie2016 We went from large corporate taxes paying $1.50 to our $1 to what it is now. $0.25 to each of our $1.00 paid in taxes.

Too bad he didn't enact ANY of those plans. It was all on paper! Where was the budget deficit in 1984? I think what he said at 13:20 was funny...oh, yes we are going to RAISE your taxes, just not as much. HAHAHAHAHA!
