Echolocation

Are bats really blind? Not exactly. Besides their eyes, bats use a special process called echolocation to navigate their environment. Watch this video to find out how bats "see" the world around them as they look for prey in the dark. #echolocation #scicomm #bats

So this is my 3 year old's absolute favorite "cartoon" right now. He was obsessed with whales but just recently became obsessed with bats also. I played this for him and he prefers it to the 1 annoying bat cartoon that exists. Well he is just crazy about this video! He calls this the "yell yo bat". He is just the happiest little toddler for the whole 4 minutes this is playing. Can who ever made this please make more?! 😆

Fun fact: If the reflected sound waves reach our ears before the completion of 0.1 seconds, then our brain does not perceive the original sounds reflected as separate sounds.

this is only partly true. below certain timescales we do not perceive two distinct sounds BUT we do perceive differences in "qualities" of sound and thus can distinguish them. if we take a nominal speed of sound at 342m/s (humidity, air pressure, etc cause this to vary) after we are less than about 3.5 meters from an object, the echo becomes a "quality" of the sound.

Thank you for creating this video. This ability is actually quite beautiful. I first learnt about echo location in a documentary about blind people who use it by making clicking sounds to create a projection of their immediate environment in their minds. I actually came across your video after first wanting to hear the song of a Bluebird, and it sounded very much like something I had heard before but could not immediate recognise, and this eventually came to me as a memory of when I had heard some kind of echo location or sonar in the past. I still can't remember where I heard it from. Weird stuff.. weird science! I loved that movie.. But anyway! I'll end it hear as there are literally almost infinite tangents that I could go on here. Thank you once again.

Great explanation! I particularly liked the amount of detail in the actual biological workings. One minor thing though; the ending implies SONAR/RADAR took inspiration from animal echolocation; but I believe SONAR/RADAR technology was developed BEFORE the discovery of echolocation in animals... although the latter does continue to offer inspiration as we learn more about it :)

I once had a stupid teacher who kept telling me that bats are blind, while even the books we had for class clearly stated that they are sensitive to light(yeah, you need to have sight for that, can't be sensitive to light if you are blind). It's obvious they use echolocation to help with hunting and seeing in the dark, and not because they are blind, but because it's just hard to see in the dark over great distances.I even had an argument some some geek that had grandma glasses, with the processing power of a dead plant, who also kept telling me that bats are blind, even tough he knew that they were sensitive to light and had EYES ! I mean. I mean, you don't need more proof for this other than knowing that they are sensitive to light and have eyes.

It is true that SONAR was developed by studying bats. SONAR was developed pre 1920 and modern work on bat echolocation was done starting in the 30s. griffin and galambos seminal work was published in 1941. the major work was published from the 1950's on

I need help understanding my question. Please help. I was walking my dogs down a dark path and I hear what sounded like birds chirping. However, It was 9:45pm so I knew it must have been bats. I could not see anything but I heard them flying around and chirping and my dogs were acting different. But out of no where i heard this high frequency sound like a house alarm that has has gone off past the first minute, except it wasn't as loud but it was just as piercing through my ears... my question is how is it or why can i hear them using echolocation? I also hear high frequency sounds that machinery make, also sounds that are used to keep rats away from homes. The home owners say they cant hear anything and they tell me it is a device to keep rats away. But i can hear it too... and its very irritating.... help??? Or atleast where do i look for my answer?

I live in Eastern Washington and I hear the clicking also and I see what looks to be a very large flying animal at night I try to make the clicking noises as well and they will swoop down on me and circle my house then later, days later I will hear the screeching the clicks will be gone from whatever this animal is! Could it possibly be an owl?
