Human echolocation lets blind man 'see'

Can a series of sounds help a blind man, in a sense, see? Daniel Kish takes CNN on a road-test of his echolocation.

    This is super inspirational! I looked this up after listening to the recent NPR program on the topic. I hope that this can empower more visually blind people, and help them to be more independent and have greater freedom. I would love to develop this skill too, even though I have normal eyesight. I wonder how hard it would be for someone with normal eyesight to develop this skill. It seems like it could be incredibly useful.

  • @AlexZorach

    @AlexZorach

    8 жыл бұрын

    From doing a brief web search, I am convinced that people probably can develop this skill to a degree, although I suspect that it is probably (a) slower to develop and (b) not able to be as fully developed when people learn it later in life, and also when people who have full or partial vision try to learn it. Also, I might have an easier time developing this skill than some people. I have outstanding hearing (and my vision is quite poor). I already can pinpoint directions and locations of sound very accurately, because I'm a birder and I bird in habitats where there is very low visibility, so my brain is already highly developed for pinpointing things by sound. I suspect people who already use their brains in this way might be able to develop echolocation more easily.

    @galaxyguy4247 I don't think the material can be determined by the echolocation but you can determine the shape and distance instead so something might be a tall pole but you don't know if it's made out of metal or wood but you just assume based on what you know of 😅. Being able to identify where you are and where are the walls is a good start it seems and then if you can identify objects through images from your mind seems like a good next step.

    Our eyes actually give us a very poor image of the world except at the fovea. By making saccades sweeping our fovea across all different visual scenes we construct a clear image in our mind's eye. Clicking is probably taking advantage of the same wiring to use sound to build up a crisp 'scene'.

  • @psilocybe8135

    @psilocybe8135

    It isn't your eyes doing that. It's the signal processing in your brain limiting what gets your attention. After taking a psychedelic many people suddenly perceive their whole visual field in clarity. First time it happens is a real sensory overload.

    Iirc, the way this works is that you train your brain to interpret sound the visual areas of the brain as well as the auditory. The human brain is already presisposed to be able to make changes like that as necessary but it's not necessarily already wired with the ability to echolocate.

    I have a theory that ALL humans echolocate unconsciously and to a minimal extent. In every day life we experience changes in sound and the acoustics around us, and we subconsciously integrate those experiences to inform a picture of the environment around us. As we enter a large, empty hallway, even if we have our eyes closed, we can hear the echoes coming from the walls, and we understanding that we are in a large empty room. As we enter a very stuffed actic, we hear the muffled sounds and understand that we are in a cramped room. It's instinctual. The thing is that people who are blind learn to rely on it much more.

    Ben lost his eyes to retinoblastoma, just as Daniel did. Daniel provided echolocation navigation instruction to Ben, but it was the old "pride goeth before a fall". Ben refused to use a full-length navigation cane (longer) than traditional canes, and if not for Daniel's supervision, would have taken a possible fatal tumble into a concrete stairwell. Ben was also not educated about establishing landmarks on a route, and subsequently got lost. He stubbornly refused to admit he didn't know it all - and it became a battle of wills - possible typical teenage oppositional behavior. Ben's mom has done a wonderful job keeping his memory alive, after the cancer came back. We miss him and were hopeful he'd lose the cane stigma as he matured. Sadly, he didn't get that chance. RIP Ben. You can learn more about the thousands of other blind children, teens and adults that Daniel's taught to see with sound at Visioneers.Org

    Isn't it very easy to prove that this works? A trial where a person who claim to have this ability get goggles that block all light. That person enters a room where objects have been placed in a way the person could not possibly know in advance. Then he is asked to identify where the objects are. And this is repeated again after another person moves the items around.
