🥢 PRINTABLE RECIPE - soupeduprecipes.com/easy-wont...
If you love dumplings, wonton, then you will always need some wrappers. Today I am going to show you how to make wonton & dumpling skin from scratch. The problem of making your own wonton skin is how to roll the sheet to paper thin. Trust me; it is not hard at all as long as you know the technique.
🥢 RECIPE - Note: The product links below are affiliate links. I may earn a commission if you purchase an item on a linked website within 24 hours.
*Ingredient list*
- 300 grams of all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp of salt
- 160 grams of water
I**nstruction:**
- In a large bowl, add 300 grams of all-purpose and 1/4 tsp of salt. Then pour in 160 grams of water in batches. Stir to mix.
- Gather all the flour together. Make it into a dough. Cover it and let it sit for 30 minutes.
- 30 minutes later, it should be more playable. Use your body weight to press the dough. Grab the side of the dough that is future away from you. Then fold that in half. Use your body way to press it down again. Turn your dough at 90 degrees angle. Repeat this again and again.
- In about 5 minutes, you can flip the dough over. You should see that the other side is very smooth but this is not ready to roll yet. We have to let this sit for another 30 minutes.
- 30 minutes later, squeeze the dough from the middle and divide it in half. Shape the dough into a round piece. Flatten it by your hand and now we can start to roll it flat.
- Wonton skin is very thin so you will end up rolling this dough into a big sheet. That is why you want to use a long rolling pin. In the beginning, do your best to roll it flat and a little bigger. Once the sheet is big enough to wrap the rolling pin around then you can put some cornstarch to prevent sticky. You have to use cornstarch when making wonton skin because cornstarch doesn’t contain any glutinous so it will cover the surface of the dough instead of mixing into the dough. So the wonton skin won’t stick to each other when you pile them up.
- Next, we are going to roll the dough into paper-thin sheet. When you roll it, the force should go to 4 directions. The first direction is pressing it down against the working surface; the second direction is pushing the rolling pin forward. Both of your hands should be slowly pushing out and spreading the dough to the left and the right. Once you reached the end of the working surface, you just pull the rolling pin back and make sure it is wrapped tight. Repeat this again and again. Remember, four directions should go all at the same time so your dough sheet can evenly and slowly become wider and bigger.
- Normally it will take me 20 minutes to roll this into paper thin. But we have 2 pieces here. What I usually do is when I get both of the dough into almost same size, I will pile them up. Make sure there is enough cornstarch in between and roll them at the same time. This will save me almost half of the rolling time.
- You can unwrap it every few minutes to. When the sheets get big enough, you should be able to see through your finger from it but It is not done yet because the middle of the sheet is thinner than the edge. That is normal because when you roll it, the center gets the most of the pressure. It is hard to show it on the camera but if you make your own then you will notice that. Now what you need to do is give few more rolls on the edge to make sure the whole sheet is even.
- You can cut it to the size you want. What I usually do is use the rolling pin as a stander and cut it straight. Then pile all the pieces together and keep cutting it. Pick out the irregular pieces and you are done.
- I make my own wrappers all the time. The thickness and shape depending on how you like and what do you want
- Also, this is good to freeze. Just make sure there is enough cornstarch in between each layer. Put them in a sealable bag and freezer them. Whenever you need to use them again, just take them out. Defrost them at room temperature or in the fridge. When it becomes soft and playable, you are good to go.

I know this is an old video of Mandy’s, but I have been making my own wonton and dumpling wrappers using this recipe and technique for over 3 years now, and it really does work every time. I cannot roll my dough by hand as thin as Mandy can, even with lots of practice, but I use my pasta roller on the 2nd thinnest setting and that works perfectly. You really do have to adjust the ratio of flour to water depending on the weather, though. After you work with dough a bit, you’ll understand what you need by using your senses; the texture of the dough, how well it comes together, and how much force you need while rolling it out, for example. I had been sure I’d never master something that looked so hard, but it just isn’t that complicated when you have a good teacher who explains the process in detail. I’m definitely not talented, but I can make passably good wrappers and skins now. It’s a tasty therapy for me whenever I want to work with my hands but need to let my mind relax and wander a bit.

That corn starch method looks like a legitimate food hack to me! I struggled with wantons and ravioli because I was always dusting with flour and just making my dough tougher to work into shape, which now that I think about the gluten, that makes sense! I'm definitely trying this method out! Thank you! Savory, sweet n' hot pork wontons, here I come!😎🤘💖

Thank you for this! We made it for the first time. Wonton wrappers have usually been readily available here. But because of the quarantine policy, we were forced to make our own wrappers. My kids literally worked for lunch, taking turns rolling out the dough into thin (or as thin as they can manage) sheets. Took a while! We used it to make siomai. We enjoyed it! Sending hellos from the Philippines! Keep safe and keep cooking everyone!

Hi Mandy! I love all your videos. Great, clear instructions, and I especially enjoy when you explain the purpose and cultural significance/ background of certain dishes and cooking techniques. If I could make one recommendation, maybe put up some sound dampening material in your kitchen when you record live audio. Even just hanging towels on the walls or on the ceiling out of view of the camera will significantly reduce the echo and improve your audio quality. Just a thought. Thank you for your videos!

Wei! Nî hâo? Hope you are well & safe in your adopted home in Ecuador! Duō xiè, duō xiè, duō xiè, duō xiè for your clear & highly meticulous videos & for helping me sharpen my dumpling cuisine skills! I have practiced the leaf folding technique for weeks & am now ready to make cinnamon banana dumplings for a close friend’s birthday. He loves gardening, so the leaf-shaped dumpling theme will be absolutely perfect for the occasion! I serve these dessert dumplings w/ honey on the side. Perhaps if I visit you in Ecuador someday, I can share all the wonderful things I learned from your instructions, INCLUDING learning the patience it takes to mix, knead & roll homemade dumpling wrappers. The time invested is so much more worth it; I discovered that homemade wrappers facilitate the speed in accomplishing the more intricate folding techniques because the dough is stickier & seals far, far better than the store-bought variety. No real need to stop & moisten the edges required for commercially-produced brands. Aloha & Mahalo from North Baltimore! Zhù hâo! :-)

YOU are amazing and so are your recipes. Thank you for sharing them with us. I have not been able to get Egg Roll or Won Ton Wrappers in our only store for at least 6 months and I am craving Egg Rolls. I will make my own now thanks to you. I didn't think I could use my pasta machine to get them this thin. I can't wait to try it now.

Ecuador !?? I imagine you probably home make many items you were able to get before this journey in your life. I know it's been a couple of years since you're making of this video but I'm grateful that it's still here and I have found it I love making things from scratch and using my hands to work the dough. Thank you so much for your time and your knowledge and may God bless you ❤️
