I was totally surprised to see your reply. I am currently studying with a teacher from Ghana. But I I have progressed to the point where I realize that I developed a lot of bad habits rhythmically from starting my musical life as a guitarist. I am not blaming guitar, I am just saying that going from guitar to drums forced me to begin to hear the bad habits I gotten away with while focusing on guitar. So, recently I started looking at "rudimental" drumming videos and other instructional videos which I hope might help me break some of my bad habits. I live in Auburn New York which is about 1 hr away from Syracuse where my teacher lives. I am not sure I could afford two teachers, but I couldn't let this opportunity pass. If you could recommend somebody who could teach me about rudiments and warm-ups like this, I would greatly appreciate it. I have to warn you, I am very loyal to my teacher. I won't be switching from my current teacher to another and I can't guarantee that I could afford to take on a second teacher. But, I do need help breaking through this plateau and I might be able to work something out such as taking lessons from a drummer who mastered rudiments, but not on a weekly basis, etc. If you are curious, you can find my teacher performing with one of his groups here kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYthyLaYccWvp9I.html, My teacher is the guy wearing the black bandanna playing the kpalango drums 26 seconds into the video. He is the leader of the group Adanfo which has had many incarnations. He also has a Reggae Band and has played with the drummer from Rusted Roots in an Afro-Jazz sort of Group. Any way, you are a great drummer and a great teacher. I saw your KZread drum cover of that Katie P. song, pretty cool. I also saw some of your other instructional videos. I am a fan.

Downbeat doubles are a double on the downbeats. So 1 2 3 4 are doubles and the and beats are singles. Downbeat 5s is same premise but it's two sets of doubles

@@marcushawkinsmusic why would someone do traditional, is it culture or something
@marcushawkinsmusic
4 жыл бұрын
skymanderggg _ all of the rudimentary based drummers back in the day were taught from people that played on slings/tilted drums. The grip was necessary. With the ability to make the drums flat in the 80’s the grip wasn’t needed but all the best players and teachers already had the muscles built. We are only one generation away from that time

@marcushawkinsmusic

Lexi Papasodaro you might need to work on accent tap slower. I would start with all unaccented notes. Then add some in at a “mp” dynamic. When you are comfortable with that and it sounds awesome move the accents to “mf “. So on and so forth until the taps are small and the accents are huge! This might take a few weeks . I believe in you

Is this marching band technique? Why do you use entire arm? Like if you'd use a hammer.

I am a fan.
I know I’m late to the party here, but you are an absolute genius. That routine was brilliant.

Thanks alot for a great warmup!!!! This exercise has become a daily warum routine for me. I just turn this video on, and start rippin ma pad!!!!much did not work at first, but gradually I comprehend it. I don’t understand the part of "downbeat doubles", and "downbeat fives". please explain how to play it? Thank you!!!!!
@massdefectecksdee
3 жыл бұрын
Downbeat doubles are a double on the downbeats. So 1 2 3 4 are doubles and the and beats are singles. Downbeat 5s is same premise but it's two sets of doubles
awesome warmup! what kind of pad is that?
Day three, still at 50% of the tempo but that smile is starting to appear. YES i'm on my way.

@@marcushawkinsmusic why would someone do traditional, is it culture or something
@marcushawkinsmusic
4 жыл бұрын
skymanderggg _ all of the rudimentary based drummers back in the day were taught from people that played on slings/tilted drums. The grip was necessary. With the ability to make the drums flat in the 80’s the grip wasn’t needed but all the best players and teachers already had the muscles built. We are only one generation away from that time

I really can’t get my left hand down. Is it possible that it’s because I have small hands?
@marcushawkinsmusic
5 жыл бұрын
Lexi Papasodaro you might need to work on accent tap slower. I would start with all unaccented notes. Then add some in at a “mp” dynamic. When you are comfortable with that and it sounds awesome move the accents to “mf “. So on and so forth until the taps are small and the accents are huge! This might take a few weeks . I believe in you
Is this marching band technique? Why do you use entire arm? Like if you'd use a hammer.
@marcushawkinsmusic
5 жыл бұрын
Leyen Sento this type of multi muscle playing can be used in any form of percussion. I use wrist most of the time . I add arm when it needs more power, I add finger when I need more speed. Hope this helps!
