Chiggers (red mites) don't create pustules, but *do* inject an enzyme under the skin to facilitate feeding which causes a truly fiendish itch. In areas where Spanish Moss grows on the trees the moss itself is often full of chiggers, so using the moss for camp bedding is a really bad idea.

@@leebrasseaux8470 Chiggers make the insane itch, not ticks. You can absolutely see chiggers. You just don't usually see the chiggers because they do not latch on like ticks so they bite and are gone, and unless you get a massive amount of them on you like this, you would never even know they were on you until the insane itch starts. Those were chiggers. I live on Long Island and we have tons of ticks (and lymes disease) all summer long, and then August comes, when we have tons of ticks AND chiggers. Chiggers are way worse than ticks unless you are lucky enough to get a tick bite with one infected with Lymes disease. Thats a whole other world of hurt.

@@trevorfornash23Unfortunately, clear nail polish does nothing for chiggers. This myth came from folks thinking that chiggers burrowed in our skin and the clear nail polish was to suffocate them. The itchy bumps are just bites, chiggers don’t burrow into skin. Keep the bites clean, use cold water/compress and anti itch cream to help alleviate the itch.

Nice job Noah. Back in 98 my late best friend and myself walked through multiple tick nests that looked very similar to your encounter. Recalling back, we had a spectacular day in the Jersey pine barrens(7 species live). And it was an early august outing. We spent hours combing our bodies but both of us got ourselves tested 6 weeks later after some minor symptoms. Turned out we both contracted Lyme disease. Fortunately we caught it early enough to keep the long term damage at a minimum. It doesn’t hurt to get yourself tested every fall just to be on the safe side. Cheers.

We all call them seed ticks in Southern IN except for a few that call them turkey ticks? They are in or just out of the larval phase as I understand it. I am in the woods all the time and they have become a nightmare in the last twenty years! Might feel a couple itches and see what looks like a small spot of moving bugs and if you try to brush them off you are in trouble lol. If you are near a water source or have a bottle of water you can dig up some dirt and make a thick paste similar to clay and blot them off of your skin and clothing. Works pretty well if you take your time and stay focused but they are so little you are almost always going to miss a few unless you completely disrobe and pay attention to detail. Think of the wet dirt as a lint roller for those pesky little shits lol

Because I think it might have come from the garage I thought it might be thirsty so I put a bowl of water down by where it was......probably sounds stupid, but that’s just me. As a kid, we'd use something called Basic H. It was a concentrated cleaner from Shaklee that you could dilute at various levels to use anything from hand soap to laundry or dishes to scrubbing oil stains off a driveway. We had no reactions to it. It seems pretty safe. We'd put it undiluted in a reused mustard squeeze bottle. Apply a small amount, maybe quarter to nickle size, and work it into the washcloth. Then wipe it on your feet, ankles, crotch, waistline, underarms, neck of your shirt, and wrists. We'd basicly put it any place that was an entry point in your clothes or a place where skin folded and/or clothes fit tightly. They seemed to want to congregate in those places. It worked for mosquitos, chiggers, fleas, ticks and most any other insect pest that might target humans in overgrown EastTexas woods and fields. I remember it working pretty well, but your mileage may vary.

I live in FL where the main habitats are pine and oak. I've rarely seen a tick. But once I was herping in a small maple swamp and I climbed to the top of the canopy and was sitting on a platform someone had built there about 30 feet up. I was gazing into the distance and not really focussed on what was nearby, but when I did, everywhere I looked was a tick and they were all slowing making their way towards me! I practically dove out of that tree! One place I ran into chiggers was kicking up pine straw on the banks of a saltwater canal back in the mangroves. Those bites took months to stop itching!

I don't know if you read the comments. Hopefully you do. I just came across your channel and I find it so interesting! I use to flip tin, plywood, mattresses and other discarded trash looking for snakes. I'm 54 years old now and did that from 12 to about 16. I use to keep a couple as pets, I'd breed speckled kings, and I'd sell some to pet shops. Then I met other herp hunters in other geographical areas in the back of magazines. I'd ship and trade. I was 15 and had snakes exotic to my area. As I got older, I realized that my hunting grounds were now residential subdivisions. They were taking the snakes natural habitat away! So I started doing the catch and release. I'd try to find a specific marking or scar to try to keep track and see if I was catching the same ones over and over, or different ones. When I'd find a snake with an injured tail, like the king snake you found in this video, I'd sack it, take it home. Treat it to keep it from getting infected, and as soon as it was healed, I'd release it exactly where I found it. When you caught the injured king snake, I was hoping you were going to do the same. Hopefully it didn't get infected and lived!!!

One year I picked up some fat swollen female ticks that had fallen off my dog in the house and put them in a jar. That was in late spring, when the ticks first emerge. By August, when I checked the jar, where there had been ticks there was just balls of tick eggs, each ball about the size of the female tick that had seemingly disintegrated. It seems they don't lay eggs--they actually *become* a ball of hundreds of tiny eggs. And I have seen what you call a tick bomb, hundreds of baby ticks, all gathered on the end of a single blade of grass, just waiting to jump off onto a passing blood meal, it would appear. And yes, if you don't get them off quickly, they will migrate to the groin and armpits and even your scalp. And I react much like you do, itching for at least a week. I have found that Adams tick spray works very good as both a repellant and to kill them once they are on you. I always want to shower asap, though.

According to the American Lyme Disease foundation on June 22nd, 2022, “Larval ticks are not born infected, they cannot transmit Lyme disease to nimal or human hosts.” The ticks featured in this video are larvae, not nymphs. According to the same source, “Nymph” stage ticks, which are still very tiny but many times the size of larvae, are most likely to transmit disease due to their small size and ability to remain undetected. The best way to handle ticks and chiggers is treat all your clothing with permethrin including underwear. {Follow directions} Then put your long pants into your socks. While advertised as a repellent it actually kills the chiggers and ticks. Each time you go into the woods there will be less and less. The beauty is it kills mosquitos too, along with any biting flies that land on your clothing.

You really shouldn't try to take from the wild unless it's in the purpose of providing for the hobby to deture taking from nature. But since there isn't any demand for red bellys in the hobby it's not sustainable. Don't mean to scold or think I was trying to be mean. I understand there cool. Just wanted to try to give you another way to think of it. I'm always down for a cool discussion on what you think. Feel free to message me if so.

Baby ticks 😱 I had way more tick problems in Atlanta than on the coast! We have blood sucking Yellow Flys, that bite like hell and takes a week to stop madly itching. Some years are worse that others, but I HATE THEM,! They will zero in on you on the way to the mail box. I wait for the weekly mowing to be done, and he gets my mail for me! There are times if the year I’d be thrilled for plain ole mosquitoes. They don’t bite him?? What’s up with that????

  • @seangere9698

It sounds like they are chiggers. Their bites can cause red bumps that look like pimples, blisters, or hives. The bites get bigger and itchier over the next few days after being bitten. They also like to congregate around the ankles, like it looked for you, and waist, as well as any warm skin folds.

Some of the herpers I know that find the highest numbers of snakes live in Wisconsin. Just keep at it and you’ll get into them eventually, Spring time and sometimes Fall are always the best for numbers. Midsummer can be slow, so don’t get too frustrated yet.

No offense, but I really do not like Copperheads. They are everywhere where I live! They can have 10 babies! I keep my grass cut short, much to the joy of the yard man. At least you can spot them. Lots of Rattlesnakes, but mostly in Maritime Forests and all over the barrier islands. You will see them on quiet beaches and they even swim between the Barrier islands. I had just moved to the coast and out for a boat ride, when I saw my first and only “swimmer”. But have been told by locals it’s not unusual to see them swimming.
