    I bet a thousand people would drive right by that ringneck snake in the road. I still don't know how you spotted it. Your eyesight is beyond 20/20!!!!! Anyway, keep up the great work. I am a subscriber, and absolutely love your videos!!!

    I have been herping (Central N.C.) for over 50 years and am so glad I found your vlog, you do a fantastic job. How you spotted that ringneck in this episode is beyond me - amazing. Through the years I have often wondered how many snakes I simply walked by and didn't see even though I was looking...

    Some boys found a snake while we were camping and I have never ran so fast to find it, we were in a rattlesnake area and i was a little scared it was a rattler- Nope! A tiny AZ mountain king!! I scooped her up cause she was in the road and showed her to the boys (with the whole 'I know what I'm doing don't ever pick up wild snakes' talk) and then she did the CUTEST thing ever... She bit me. Twice. It was absolutely ADORABLE!!!

    Have you ever been on the glorious Roller Coaster called "Copperhead Strike" at Corowinds? It's an homage to the cool snake?There is also a good one called Diamondback at King's Island. The Diamondback in Cincy is located in the Western portion of the park.

    Very nice pygmy in the end. Yes, I remember others that were much more vibrant, but this is good as well. Also, could this little ringneck have been disturbed by something? Why else should it be dispersing on the road instead of going parallel to it? They don’t normally move like this in open areas. The scarlet snake was too little when you’re showed it. I imagined them as larger.

    Nice variety tonight. Do they go to the roads to get warm?

  • @NKFherping

    @NKFherping

    Жыл бұрын

    Some do, particularly the vipers. But I think most are just trying to get where they need to be in preparation for the impending winter this time of year. Be it looking for food, or getting to their overwintering habitats.

  • @Steevee14

    @Steevee14

    Жыл бұрын

    @@NKFherping I generally agree with your reply - I don't see how a reptile could "go to a road to get warm", when the warmth of the road is probably not detectable by the herp (I tentatively assume) until it is essentially on the road. Correct me if you think my tentative assumption is off the mark.

  • @NKFherping

    @NKFherping

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Steevee14 Your assumption about their inability to detect warmth is incorrect, snakes are not brainless. They can feel warmth and frequently seek it out, and they’re able to remember and return to areas that suit their needs. Vipers in particular have heat sensing pits, thus the name “pit vipers”. They allow them to essentially see heat via infrared radiation. This is why one can find piles of snakes sharing prime basking locations in the right weather. This behavior likely doesn’t benefit them much on roads given peoples affinity for running them over, but it’s entirely possible that at least some intentionally venture onto pavement to take advantage of the heat it retains.

    Noah - is it ok to move a snake from busy area of traffic to a completely different area - or just move them in same area??

  • @NKFherping

    @NKFherping

    As close as possible is always preferred, but if it’s super high traffic their odds might be better in a more natural area as close as you can find one.

    Why do rat snakes always seem to "kink up"

  • @NKFherping

    @NKFherping

    It’s behavioral camouflage, helps break up the outline of a solid black snake. Works much better in the forest than on the road.
