Eastern Coyotes, Mt Tom, Mass.

Two Eastern Coyotes on Mt Tom range, western Mass, April 23, 2015, temp mid-40's. To see more, watch the "Mt Tom Wild" video on this channel, at • Mt Tom Wild: Wildli...
What is an eastern coyote, and what should it really be called? :
DNA studies have shown that eastern coyotes (Canis latrans var.) are more coyote than anything else, and are hybrids. They have variously bred with wolves and dogs; some have almost no wolf genes at all.
Roland Kays (Research Associate Professor of Wildlife and Scientist at NC Museum of Natural Sciences, North Carolina State University) says:
"Coyotes in the Northeast are mostly (60%-84%) coyote, with lesser amounts of wolf (8%-25%) and dog (8%-11%). Start moving south or east and this mixture slowly changes. Virginia animals average more dog than wolf (85%:2%:13% coyote:wolf:dog) while coyotes from the Deep South had just a dash of wolf and dog genes mixed in (91%:4%:5% coyote:wolf:dog). Tests show that there are no animals that are just coyote and wolf (that is, a coywolf), and some eastern coyotes that have almost no wolf at all. In other words, there is no single new genetic entity that should be considered a unique species. Instead, we are finding a large intermixing population of coyotes across the continent, with a smattering of noncoyote DNA mixed in to varying degrees along the eastern edge. The coywolf is not a thing."
On the other hand, Jonathan G. Way (Research Scientist, Clark University) is of the opinion (theconversation.com/why-the-e...) (May 11, 2016) that the term "coywolf" is appropriate for this animal:
"...my colleague William Lynn (Marsh Institute, Clark University) and I published a meta-analysis in the scientific journal Canid Biology & Conservation that summarized recent studies on this creature and confirmed that what we call “coyotes” in northeastern North America formed from hybridization (the mating of two or more species) between coyotes and wolves in southern Ontario around the turn of the 20th century.
In the paper, we suggest that coywolf is the most accurate term for this animal and that they warrant new species status, Canis oriens, which literally means eastern canid in Latin. We based this on the fact that they are physically and genetically distinct from their parental species of mainly western coyotes (Canis latrans) and eastern wolves (Canis lycaon). They also have smaller amounts of gray wolf (Canis lupus) and domestic dog (Canis familiaris) genes."

Seems there was a den around and your presence caused him to be cautious and change direction! Thank you for sharing! He/she is beautiful! I have a den in woods next door, of the eastern coyotes, and hear them all the time. Only seen them three times, but they are so beautiful and elusive! I am going to get a trail cam; and check it out. Probably for next season as the pups are probably too grown to use much longer!

Roland Kays doesn't know what they are like here in eastern Massachusetts. By his own definition, they are or are becoming a new species. We don't have unneutered dogs running around here like they do in North Carolina. They are not mating with dogs, coyotes, or wolves. They almost exclusively mate with each other and have for the last forty years in Massachusetts, and there are 10,000 of them here.

Ya they are all over western Massachusetts here as well my opinion way to many if it was my choice it would be open season for coyotes all year there's not enough hunters that are out there trying to control their numbers are they really affect the deer population which is hard enough to hunt here in Massachusetts I literally hear coyote packs almost every night and I'm in a suburban neighborhood with woods all around but u think we lived in the country the way they're all over here

Definitely not the smaller western coyotes that I saw in the Disney nature specials in the 50's. More like JV wolves. I live in a town seven miles outside downtown Boston and have seen similar animals on five occasions.

Eastern coyotes have varying degrees of Algonquin wolf in their DNA. Something as much as 19%, if memory serves. It's pretty interesting. Somehow a male wolf can still mate with a female coyote and create viable offspring that can reproduce, it seems.

This is why the name Eastern coyote is a horrible name, as it implies that they are a pure Eastern sub-species of the Prairie wolf "Coyote"-(Canis latrans), they are not. They are a hybrid Canis of four Canis species, latrans, lupus, Lycaon, familiaris, which is why coywolf is also a horrible name because it should really be "coy two-wolves dog" as that is the genetics they hold. Also seeing the word coy next to wolf, the word coy means shy, timid, not a trait i would put on this variation of Canis, they are more than happy to be seen. I personally like the common name of Tweed wolf-(Canis sp) that i've seen used, as it's only refering to the typical colour tone, not what percentage of what ever Canis they are, that can vary within there range, or what area they come from.

It appears that the issue of what this animal should be called is still being debated. Some scientists think it should be called "eastern coyote", not "coywolf", since its genes are mostly coyote. Others think coywolf is more appropriate, since it does have wolf genes, and is significantly different than western coyotes. Some think it should be considered its own (new) species, Canis oriens ("eastern canid"). See the discussion in the video description above for more info.

There's an interesting video on KZread I saw where they were checking on a breeding pair very close to a fairly large city. This breeding pair had a den about 20 ft off a very busy running path in a park. And nobody knew about it

I believe the eastern coyote has been shown (via genetic testing) to be a varying mix of coyote, wolf, and dog. The ratio of the mix varies from region to region, with the amount of wolf in the mix generally falling off toward the southern part of their range. It's thought that coyotes at the expanding edge of their range interbreed with wolves or dogs at first(because they don't often encounter other coyotes), eventually becoming less likely to do so as their own ("coywolf") numbers increase. Depending on location, one of these animals may be a mix of coyote, wolf, and/or dog, to varying degrees.
