    I got to finally sing with the sr314 and it has everything I have been looking for in a mic. I was very impressed. It reminded me when I used to sing on small diaphragm pencil style mics. Had everything needed and then some. I did notice a difference (that I liked) without the round pop filter that is located at the top of the grille. I took it out when I unscrewed the grille. I noticed I didn’t have to apply hardly any additional EQ (depending on the system and room). It fit me perfectly. I love the low end response when I hit a low note right on top of the grille. I think I might have found “THE” mic for me. Thanks to a friend for letting me try it out. It worked great on my portable system the EV Evolve 30m.

    Great review Anton! How would you say it compares to the Earthworks SR40v? Would you consider the sr314 a step above? Is the SR40v more neutral? Thanks for your wonderful reviews!

    Hi Anton, I love your videos, you’re the best microphone reviewer! Can I recommend a mic for review? The Ehrlund EHR-H. It has a triangular membrane and 7 hz to 87000 hz frequency range!

    Which would you prefer more? This or the sr40v? If you had to pick one which would it be? The sr314's unconventional look really turns me off on this mic. I'm sure some love it. I personally hate it. Also, thank you for putting it in a regular mic clip. This was something I have been wondering about. Also how do you feel about this one being cardioid and the sr40v being hyper?

    Hi Anton, since the SR314 shapes differently from other mics, what pop foam filter would fit this mic? I'm desperatly looking for one that would fit. This mic is great, but the popping sound is quite sensitive. Please help. Thank you.

    Great review as always. I would really love to see you review one of the Antelope Edge modeling mics as compared to the mics it supposedly models, but it might require you to spend a few thousand pounds to do it. ;^). At any rate, I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on that technology.

    I know nothing about it, but I will investigate. Yes, it seems to me that if you want a 'microphone sound', then these days, you may as well start with the best possible flat response, high definition microphone and then add your vintage Neumann (or whatever) 'degradation' later, digitally. This seems to be well established in the guitar world.

    I’m not Mr. Browne but to some people wanting a comparison to SR40V: I’ve used both extensively - I find the SR40V to still be the superior microphone. While at first I liked the brighter sound of the SR314, I eventually found the brightness to be a bit grainy and unnatural, especially with more intense/higher volume sounds. The SR40v is so much smoother up top. SR314 is somewhat nicer for soft, airy female vocals, and the proximity effect is strong so it can add some weight there, but it can become sizzly with more intensity and boomy if you get too close. The 314 is also very uncomfortable to hold because it is wider and the slope of from the head to the connector is steep, I found it very awkward in my hands. The SR40V is one of the most comfortable out there. The handling noise on the 314 is a tiny bit worse and the plosive handling is a lot worse in my opinion. I found I could get away with no foam on the SR40v, but I found I needed to add foam windscreen to the 314 to totally eliminate pops. In the end, the weird high freq sizzle, big proximity effect, and uncomfortable grip caused me to sell the 314 and switch back to SR40v! But that’s just my voice. I will say the sweet spot is noticeably bigger, but it’s about 4 inches too far for me so working the mic is awkward. All that said - it’s probably third favorite handheld mic after SR40v and Ehrlund EHR-H. Great review as always, Anton!

    Thanks for your contribution, Bryan. It's good to hear your opinion. I haven't used the 40V in a while and I'm planning to stop using the 314 so that when I come to compare them, I'll be fresh. It will be interesting. Happy New Year, Anton

    I'm curious to know how well-treated your room is here. What acoustic treatment does this room have? I imagine these Earthworks mics are very unforgiving of boxy or boomy rooms.

  • @AntonBrowne

    @AntonBrowne

    Not treated at all but lots of stuff. SR314 has slightly wider polar pattern, so can pick up more extraneous sounds if not used carefully.

    @@AntonBrowne I contacted earthwork and this is their reply Cathy Casali (Earthworks Audio) Feb 13, 2023, 5:13 PM EST Hello Arass - we actually believe that the SR314 is a better microphone but we undersatn if you find the look of it polorizing. (The black version looks great too.) We are here to make this right for you. What would you like us to do. The SR40V has been discontinued due to supply chain issues. We can not replace.
