Recording and mixing vocals with Earthworks SR40V microphone

Музыка

Hey all!
Earthworks sent me this high definition hypercardioid condenser microphone to try out and make some videos with, and I wanted to run through some of its features as well as break down my recording and mixing process for the vocals on our new song Einstein, 1905.
Check out the Einstein, 1905 video here:
• Einstein, 1905
I really love this mic, and while it won’t be the best fit for everyone (particularly those on a smaller budget), it’s a very powerful tool for both live performances and studio recordings. I’m looking forward to taking it on the road with me whenever we’re able to play live concerts again, and to continue using as my main vocal mic for our livestreams.
You can read more about it on Earthwork’s website:
earthworksaudio.com/products/...
Buy it here:

Many years ago, my guitar teacher said to me "know your gear". His point was that you can play/sing at a professional level, but if you're not on top of the sound you're producing, you'll sound like a beginner. This presentation exemplifies that theory. There's so much more to it than meets the eye, or, in this case, the ear. Your fans are so fortunate that you put so much consideration into your music, and it's presentation. Thank you for your efforts!

Reina, I was already very impressed with you but this video revealed, to me at least, the depth of your knowledge regarding the complex and subtle technical aspects of sound production. It was fascinating to listen to how you weave your artistry into the technical capabilities of your equipment to produce EXACTLY the sound you want. Also, you are an excellent public speaker. Your presentation wasn't filled with "ahhs" and "umms". Thank you so much. I will now enjoy your work with a deeper level of appreciation for your knowledge and artistry.

You know I think it is your "nerdy" side, and I say that with up most respect, that is what makes your songs really work. You not only have the creative aspect down, but are so well versed in the technical side of it too. When I listen to the recordings of your older songs it is almost as if you hear just how much you have learned about recording from song to song. Kind of like stepping stones to where you are now. Thanks for sharing.

Having come from making sound measuring and frequency analysis equipment, I'm inclined to go with the microphone with a flat and linear frequency and amplitude response! However, my best frequency response story comes from when I was obliged to leave my comfort zone and build some hydrophone preamps and filters for conservationists. (The UK government may have steered them to the company I worked for because we'd never done any work on submarine warfare and, in theory, we couldn't let the octopus out of the bag.) After a few prototypes told them what sounds were out there under the sea, they ended up deciding that they wanted to examine marine animal "sounds" from about 0.1Hz up to 350Khz, so they wanted a hydrophone preamp with such a frequency range, and with variable bandwidth bandpass filters that could be set anywhere within that range. I helped design this and then did the building. The conservationists tested their hydrophone in a swimming pool near St Albans, and to prove it would work at a depth of three hundred odd feet, they had three hundred odd feet of cable looped around the swimming pool. As they swept their bandpass filters somewhere North of 150Khz they encountered "voices and occasionally music", which we, being engineers and knowing about radio communications and everything, diagnosed as BBC Radio Four's Longwave service.

Reina, I was impressed with your knowledge of microphones and recording processes in general. I have been involved in recording since the late 1970s, so a long time. I am a StudioOne user, not ProTools, but I am very familiar with it. Of course, I pretty much knew, from listening to all of you perform, that you knew the basics of recording. I can tell that you know what you are doing and it shows in your work. You are one of the few female singer-songwriters that I follow, because I have always leaned toward male groups. when I listen to music, but that has changed some lately.

I know this isn't as popular as your other videos, because there aren't as many gear geeks that follow the channel, but it's really cool seeing your mixing style. Somewhat recently, I learned how much the producer and engineer color the sound of the track. Late last year, I recorded my friend's piano and vocals for a song he wrote, then my mixing ended up making the track sound very The Fray-ish, which was too much of my own alt-rock influence than what he is more about.

Cool video. Most interesting was for me when you talked about how you estimate your voice. I'm seriously trying to learn to sing and you are more a role model for me than most male singers although i'm a baritone which tends more to be a base than a tenor. When i hit the right tone i always have a problem with getting strenght and loudness into my voice but i try to sing cool phrases anyway. Its very fascinating for me to hear and analyse how you use your voice singing different songs because it always seems to me - as you said- that youre quiet singer but generate such a unique tone and phrases with less effort and loudness. Maybe you could also make a video like this about the way you sing and you developed youre voice over the years. Would be very interesting :)

In a lot of KZread videos I notice a clap or snap to help the person mixing the audio video tracks. I don’t notice that on your videos anymore.
