Tom (nice name by the way) I know you like the Icon Pro; what are your thoughts on the Ethos as a "side-by-each" comparison?

An interesting comparison I think most people want to know (Tom Buck did it too) Ethos with windscreen: 3:56 Icon Pro with Ethos windscreen: 4:10

The fact that the gain is slightly different and the low end is different between the Icon Pro and Ethos leads me to believe they are not the same microphone. They are similar, but the Ethos definitely sounds better to my ears.

Dude I gotta say you sound good on the Ethos. I think the mics that really work with you are the Ethos, the KSM32, the KMS 105, the Neat King Bee (I guess both) and the NT1 (ironically). But the Ethos sounds the best on ya.

I think the Icon Pro with the foam windscreen sounded better on your voice. As you know, you can now buy the foam windscreen from Earthworks for the Icon Pro. The Ethos seems more mid-forward taming the highs on the Icon Pro. Deep voices would certainly sound better with the Icon Pro. Higher pitched or simbilant speakers may do better with the Ethos. Can't go wrong either way. Good review.

Good comparison, these mics are flawless they are designing are for a different purpose, even though the ethos roll more big bottom the trade-off is proximity, you have to get close to the mic, while the Icon pro allows room for mic placement will sound great even when not close to the mouth.

I'm loving the sound I'm getting out of the icon pro. I had wondered about a wind screen on it. Not necessarily the one I'm this video.

Great video, was keen to see these side by side. Sadly though, I feel like I just end up with more questions than answers! I really can't tell them apart. Having the Ethos windscreen does "deaden" all of them nicely though for a bit more of that broadcasty vibe. And they're all stunning even just to look at. Hnngg. I almost feel like buying the Icon Pro and the foam windscreen accessory separately (it is on their website) would give more options for a slightly lower price.

Well done! I had thought that the Ethos sounded heavier in the low frequencies than the Icon Pro (and not necessarily in a good way), but your demos show, I think, that a lot of the difference comes from the foam wind screen, rather than the mics themselves.

Both are outstanding mics and I hear the Ethos with an ever-so-slight, richer or warmer tone however the Icon Pro lends itself to a more "neutral" tone and that works best for "MY" voice. Is the Ethos "better"? I would just call it different and may in fact be better for some (women's voice for example) but is it $200 better? Well, not for me but your mileage may vary. Great review as always. Thank You AND all the other comments as well.

What were your thoughts on the USB version of the Icon? Thanks for this comparison. Really loving these Earthworks mics, a brand I hadn’t really considered until this past year

Hello Bandrew, do you happen to know if the Ethos can be as neutral and as analytical for singing if the provided foam is removed and replaced by a pop filter? I got the Ethos during the holidays here in Canada but I cannot get it to work for my acoustic guitar/singing recordings (although I'm aware that one of the issues that I have is the untreated room that I record in plus the fact that my acoustic guitar is very overtone heavy, which makes it sound boomy ). Ethos is the more premium mic. The Icon Pro comes from the original Icon, which was a USB mic. It's "pro" because it has XLR instead of USB. Ethos is the champ.

Merci for this comparison. These three mics are remarkable. My preferences: the Ethos without the foam windscreen and the Icon pro with the foam windscreen! The bass is less present on the Icon pro and the top seems to me more "hard" with the metal grill. This is really insignificant. For the price difference, it's their choice. I am in love with this Ethos and the SV33. Bravo Earthworks.

@@Podcastage2 Your jacket is not yellow. It's light brown. Visibility jackets are yellow. If you cross the street in that jacket there's a reasonable chance you'll get run over.

Firstly, thank you again @podcastage, for another awesome and intuitive video🙏🏾🙏🏾 I've had the icon for about a year and enjoyed using it overall (some voice over & singing work when I'm laying ideas at the desk). But felt like the tone could/should have a slightly better low end to high end balance. After much research and debating....I went ahead and ordered the adapter piece for $80 and got it within about 2 business days from b&h. I've been recording with it daily for about 3 days.....I officially now LOVE THE MIC. I was thinking before of maybe selling and trying the ethos....but I'm good now. Perfectly happy with the tone I'm getting at EVERY PROXIMITY. Just my experience/opinion. I'm not pro on all of the technical aspects. I liked the mic before was feeling that maybe the hi end was a little TOO rich to me. And I tried a cheap foam mic cover which pretty much fit, but didn't look ideal and still didn't quite capture a great tone to me. But a really good one! The adaptor put this mic over for me. it's now a permanent family member in my studio and right on my desk.

Since they charge $80 for the Icon Pro windscreen, it makes the Ethos only $120 more since that mic comes with the windscreen. Surely, for $120 more, you'd buy the Ethos if you didn't own either one and had to pick one, right? I'm still debating between the two and leaning toward the Ethos, but trying to justify the additional $$.

@@brianfitzrealty Hard to say(since I haven't actually used the Ethos) but I'm of the mindset that if they're related in base nature....the ethos(being released a year or so later) is likely an improvement on the Icon overall. That said, it's a difference was 300 or more dollars I might say try the icon, but for only 120 more, I would personally go with the big brother and hopefully not wonder at all if it sold myself short. Hope this helps! Let me know what you end up doing and how you feel about it when you get it! By the way, if you're using it for some sort of visual production as well, it looks great in any podcast/video setting 🌊🌊

I couldn't tell much difference other than the Ethos seemed to have a little more bottom-end, but you looked a little closer to it. However, more importantly than the direct vocal sound, I'd love to hear some common background noises. Your video here ended just as you said the A/C came on. A lot of people sit in a bedroom with no sound-proofing, and they often don't understand why various mics pick up more or less background sounds than others. They buy popular USB mics and don't realize they might be an omni mic then complain that they need to spend a bunch of money on sound-proofing rather than just replace it with a cardioid mic. Mic vendors are also more likely to send mics like these to people with studio-quality environments than folks who sit in a normal bedroom with no sound-proofing, so there are very few mic tests that relate to situations that most home podcasters, vloggers, and just casual Zoom participants have. Consider adding some background noises in your tests, like the A/C coming on and off, as well as other things that might be commonly encountered in typical home offices. :)

Considering the money you dish out as is, I’d go with the Icon Pro and get myself the matching Windshield, ICON BF+SS. But… oof… 728 Euros in Germany are a hefty amount of money for this.

Icon Pro has a high frequency that I can't stand, a bit less with the foam.

@@Podcastage2 thanks man, that means a lot. It’s a general tips and demonstrations Channel on camera, sound, and lighting for video. One of the primary points I make in all of my mic comparisons videos (I’ve shot 3 so far) is exactly what you said. My voice and my opinions may be different than the other videos out there on the same mic or other gear. When I’m shopping for a piece of gear I surf tons of videos to get a consensus. First videos coming in the next few weeks or early January depending on how the holidays go and how long it takes me to shake this cold (that slows down mic comparisons for sure).

I just didn't hear a big enough difference to justify the higher cost. I have the icon pro. It sounds great. It took three orders from sweetwater to get one that worked but the third times the charm!

Not a difference to say that it will make it any more significant than that these two mics are basically the same with the most minor difference except from how far you can have it from your mouth

Although I love their products, I am not pleased with Earthworks pricing and marketing games, of late. How wonderful that a $699 microphone became a $399 microphone overnight. However, if you prefer the black version ($50 more than the polished stainless since the mic’s inception), that will NOW cost you $350 more. I called them to ask why. They could only tell me that the black costs more to manufacture. Really, $350 more? They have made me wonder if we were all getting ripped off before or, alternatively, if they are cutting corners somewhere on new Ethos production. Alternatively alternatively, the Ethos isn’t selling and they are blowing them out the doors. Disappointing all the way around.

Personally I prefer the Ethos over the icon pro , I really don’t mind having the mic in my face like I’m eating it lol I really like the warmth in the mic and it sounds very clear in my opinion. And the price difference between the icon pro and ethos is too large, for the advantages your getting with ethos I think it isn’t worth that much of difference compared to the icon

I can't say "SR314" without picturing Tom Cruise asking himself about "job 314".

To be fair, it is way more tan than yellow. Maybe you're also surrounded by colorblind people. 😆

Earthworks makes Microphones with very flat response curves. Why is anyone surprised that two mics with very flat response curves sound incredibly similar? Flat is flat.
