Agree, ended up shelling out only because I had to put my game time into perspective Yeah, maybe destiny/TD/DMC5/KH3 cost more to make, but ive really spent more time and had more fun playing with friends and making new ones between EDF 5 and IR in the past couple of weeks than i have in years of more "valuable" titles. Had to stop looking at it like "what is this game worth" and more like "whats it worth to _me_ ?"

I literally had to tell my friends I'd pay for their EDF 5 purchases, after only watching videos and never playing it myself, if they hated it based on the bad metacritic reviews. We're now 60 hours in and I never thought for a second I'd have to pay out a dime because the game oozes fun and it shows if you're willing to look passed the issues and relish the cheesiness

Instead of waiting for this one to never come, wait for edf 5 where you really feel an improvement in everyquality of the Sandbox EDF titles. This one is made by D3 and while it is fun it is not anywhere close to the enjoyment of EDF 5

@@genesisswift384 It was made by Yuke's, not D3, it was produced by EDF's series director with little involvement with hopes that Yuke could develop & translate a more "westernized" EDF experience. Personally I find EDF:IR better, as EDF5 is same shit; different day. With some minor changes to classes and underwhelming weapons.

Yuke's has developed for a lot of platforms over the years, but their PC resume is pretty much limited to ports of recent WWE 2K titles. Those were poor ports with some very rough performance issues. EDF lives and dies on its ability to handle a screen full of bugs, so a repeat of that on EDF:IR would be a real deal breaker. Sandlot's only PC port I know of was EDF4.1. They made some mistakes, but proved at least capable. I'd gladly take an EDF5 port of comparable quality.

Pre ordered it, playing it, didn't regret one bit. Great work with the review as always, really enjoyed your video.

I'd recommended you check the mainline entries instead, EDF 4'1 is on pc and EDF 5 is currently a digital only ps4 exclusive.

@@SilentS0lid yeah there are still some MP games out there but none capture that old school co-op experience like this one does ... Reminds me of sitting around playing Golden Eye or hosting LAN parties with my Army Buddies back in the 90s on MechWarrior. It just unforgivingly captures that. This series knows what it is, knows what its fan base wants, and has yet to pull an EA or Ubisoft and betray that.

Thanks for the review. This game is for me but will have to wait until the end of the month because I am broke. I will be getting it though for sure. Tweeted out too.

@@genesisswift384 And sandlot took most of the innovations from IA. Multiple classes and online coop for 2025 and onward. A sprint, dodge, and boost buttons in edf 5. The only thing holding IA back was number of missions, art style, and repetitive enemies. Although I am surprised that sandlot didn't take the bomber spider and mantis enemies. They are my favorite enemies from all the games.

I have never played an Earth Defense Force game before. Having said that, I will have to give the series a shot at some point. The franchise as a whole, never takes itself too seriously. It's basically an over the top 80's or 90's action movie, which is what makes it so appealing and enjoyable. Graphically, it's nothing to write home about. At the same time, the visuals don't matter because you are too focused on exterminating massive sized bugs to even care anyway. With that aside, thanks Karak for another stellar review. I really appreciate the hard work!

Looks like the closest I'll get to lost planet 2 again... It needs to get to PC.

I am praying to god iron rain comes to PC like EDF 5 did. (still playing EDF 5 as we speak) TAKE MY MONEY!

I just found and bought this game (ultimate edition) on sale like two years later, worth it (it was 22$). It's a game that knows how to be a game and I love it.

The possibility that another EDF will come out (or be announced) in the next 10 months is enough to get me to quick pass on this game, but your entertaining review gives me a desire to play one of the older EDFs I liked. I think you presented it very well and superbly narrated the post apocalyptic video travelogue of invasion fun on the farm with zeal only you can do.

When you see someone playing a generic looking video game in a movie...

Amazed how this series keep going and going yet amazing ones die out after 1 game lol. A VR mode would be cool though.

For the last decade, I have been leaning towards the "less graphics, more gameplay" . This game is exactly that, and I have been sitting on this for a while now. Just made the jump to pay $15 for EDF IR , my reasoning is the upgraded graphics, and cac. I hear the humor is different, but I don't think I'm ready for EDF 5 lol

Update, I bought edf 5. Iron rain is dead, no online lobbies, and the ones that exist play private

I am interested in playing, but hesitant about playing a game where gaint sized ants and spiders are constantly running towards you

What strikes me instantly is very poor quantity of enemies compared to EDF5, there were like legions of aliens coming at you, here dozens at best. I get that graphic etc. but that takes away one of the most enjoyable parts of EDF, swarming enemies. I would rather have worse graphic with more monsters than this.

With more polygons, _EDF: Heavy Rain_ can have more giant bugs and robots, and therefor more emotions.

This game is a must buy for any EDF fan.

Thanks for the review. Have you played EDF 5 yet to be able to offer a comparison? I don't remember seeing a review for it. I'll be waiting for their PC releases in either case, but I'm leaning toward EDF 5, since Iron Rain seems to take itself a little too seriously. The silly, over-the-top, B-movie camp is what makes EDF so fun for me (along with the co-op).

He mentioned EDF 5 in this review, he said the gameplay was a little faster than in this. The story in Iron Rain is SUPER goofy, you do not have to worry about them taking it too seriously lol I love how silly the other EDF games are, so you can trust me on that. The old German scientist guy in this game has the most overblown accent in the universe, really funny hearing him explain stuff.

That rather direct 4.1 port was actually pretty good despite it screaming console game in your face. I mean, it controls well & looks like garbage. Pretty much what EDF is all about. Oh and insects, too bad the EDF song causes memory leaks in multi player though.

Any 1 buy the 90 dollar edition i no its overpriced but edf flys way under the radar sales must b decent tho if they keep putting games out with that being said i think i might buy the 90 dollar one just curious if any 1 got it tho

This is one of those games where if you played in the arcade it's somewhat very fun but gets expensive. Though, playing it at home feels like it's not quite worth the time.

Is there microtransactions on it? bonuses says that they give in game currency

Arthur. Florence Certainly a lot less going on then in 5 or 4.1, but the overwhelming aspect of gameplay is still on the spot imo. Playing the missions on hardest or disaster does add to it as well, with hardest being pretty difficult even with a lot of health. The later missions definitely have a lot going on and they are pretty hard. The only issue is you have about 10 missions maybe a few more that really deliver on that overwhelming gameplay we know and love from the standard series. Never the less, the game gets pretty difficult near the ending and I would imagine hardest and disaster in the later missions is pretty chaotic. A side note, Unlike the standard series, Iron Rain doesn’t add insane extra waves of enemies nearly as much when playing the harder difficulties. They add more stuff here and there, but essentially they just hit much harder and more frequent.

What the difference between main EDF and Iron rain? Which one should i buy?

I'm in the same boat. My friends and I just beat the base game on hard but already have the dlc plus playing it on the harder difficulties. I think we'll end up playing it but they're losing week one sales doing this.

Now we just need this and EDF 5 on PC. I just got into EDF 4.1 a few months ago. I HATE that it took me this long to get into it. I can't vouch for this and EDF 5. But, if you are even remotely close to being on the fence about EDF 4.1 by all means buy it. Especially if it's on sale.

@Sir Galahad How can I put this...? They are exclusive to PS4 the same way as my shoes are to my feet. Sure, I like my shoes. But, I can take them off. Or, I can buy another pair anytime I wish. D3 can release these games on any platform they please anytime they wish. ...For now these games are solely on PS4. I have a PS4. But, I'd rather play them on PC at a higher resolution and with a much more stable frame-rate. Hope this clears things up👌

Astraldragon Gaming please dont play this one or insect armageddon first if you also have other edf games. Those 2 are so much worse than the others the only thing they have in common is the theme of shooting giant insects/aliens. Edf 2 is still the best imo, tightest progression and ramp up in difficulty and not overly long. But I dont think that ones out on pc.

All I can say is, good luck & have fun. A good laugh once in a while as well, because... Voice Acting! 😂 That seriously got me killed a few times with soldiers making comments like: "shoot them dead!" & "the bullets are empty!" + the cheesy EDF song is great during a total insect mayhem.

Hearing that the game has actual framerate has me hopeful for a PC release down the road where it can actually take advantage of that aspect. I might actually enjoy an EDF game more if they do that.

I like the character customization feature OwO. I can make "Tactical Bikini Onee-chan" there. It can use more enhanements tho like actually modify the body feature (e.g Boobs).
