E95: What the hell is happening in Germany? The brutal attack on pro-Palestinian voices

As Israel’s genocide in Gaza rages on, Germany is leading efforts to silence criticism of Israel's actions.
The German government and its institutions have cancelled a stream of cultural events that show solidarity with Palestine, smearing prominent artists and intellectuals - many of them Jewish - as anti-semitic. They’ve intimidated activists and searched their homes. They’ve even made cultural grants - and in the case of one German state, citizenship - contingent on support for Israel.
And now, German politicians are trying to ban the Palestine Congress, a vital event planned for the 12-14 April in Berlin, to unite activists for a ceasefire in Gaza.
How successful have these clampdowns been in hindering activism for Palestine? What are the underlying factors propelling the authoritarian stance of German politicians, and how does this relate to the country’s Nazi history? And as we move into the European elections, what might this repression mean for Germany, for other countries in Europe, and for the plight of the Palestinian people?
Our panel, including Yanis Varoufakis, and Karin De Rigo and Lucas Febraro from Berlin, investigate. Join us live and have your say!

Hajj Amin al-Husayni meets Hitler In this German propaganda newsreel, the former Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husayni, an Arab nationalist and prominent Muslim religious leader, meets Hitler for the first time. During the meeting, held in in the Reich chancellery, Hitler declined to grant al-Husayni’s request for a public statement--or a secret but formal treaty--in which Germany would: 1) pledge not to occupy Arab land, 2) recognize Arab striving for independence, and 3) support the “removal” of the proposed Jewish homeland in Palestine. The Führer confirmed that the “struggle against a Jewish homeland in Palestine” would be part of the struggle against the Jews. Hitler stated that: he would “continue the struggle until the complete destruction of Jewish-Communist European empire”; and when the German army was in proximity to the Arab world, Germany would issue “an assurance to the Arab world” that “the hour of liberation was at hand.” It would then be al-Husayni’s “responsibility to unleash the Arab action that he has secretly prepared.” The Führer stated that Germany would not intervene in internal Arab matters and that the only German “goal at that time would be the annihilation of Jewry living in Arab space under the protection of British power.”

I am german by myself and i didn't know the difference until i was 50 and it wasnt easy to find out....one day i just recognized 3 words for jews and i wanted to know why are there 3 words for jewish people and surprise surprise, i found out you dont need to be a jew to be zionist, there are much more non jew zionists than jewish zionists and there are much more non jewish semites than jewish semites. I was German and grown up in Germany as well, and we for example never learned about the Nakba - Palestinians were basically never mentioned, as if they didn't exist. In Germany nobody considers Palestinians rights, they make the same mistake again, as they did 80 years ago - just following the b.s. Israel does NOT have the right of self-defence in a country they occupy, I am as much disgusted by Germany as I am by Israel.

What happened in Germany during WW2 was planned from 1897 by Theodor Herzl. Most real Jewish people know the truth. Jewish were sacrificed by zionist so that they could make all Jewish scared so they would leave their country and move to Palestine. Now, German people are paying high taxes because they are blamed, and all the tax money goes to Israel so they can occupy more of the Arabic land. The USA is also using their own citizens as slaves for Israel. Now that people are fighting out the truth and everyone is very angry, they are banning people or trying to make them afraid. Human mentality doesn't work like that. They will lose this war with us.

Germany was occupied by Zionists, remember? Even Hitler was one of them, an actor. They genocided the Germans as they did to the people in Russia, Ukraine, and elsewhere. They Zionists told them that their God is a Jew by race and that he ordered "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." What is left of real Germans cant even say anything real and must put their head down in shame or be called a Nazi and racist and have their life destroyed completely or even put in prison or executed.

I can’t talk with my family and friends about political issues, as they are completely differently and badly informed! As I am an older person I want to inform you, it’s not the “last “ generation to be anti Palestine, but clearly the opposite, we have always discussed the helpless position of the Palestinians under the occupation of Israelis. I believe it’s just an ignorance now of the older generations, not to speak out against this wrongfully development. I do agree absolutely with all your speakers, thankfully I live in Canada, how can Germany be so wrong again!!

  • @oceanbreathyogawellness4487

    @oceanbreathyogawellness4487

But here is the problem....What you prefer to align with is then used as a wedge to say others are ignorant or poorly informed. And someone on the "other side" will think the same, Nothing is and ever should be about others agreeing or they are ignorant. We already saw that with Covid and that has set the world free to be like it is now. Believing that there are other perspectives and that a belief based on individual experiences, emotions and thoughts is true and inevitable. Maybe this would provide more balance in the world. We now have groups like Hamas who believe that the only good way to live with the "other side" is for them to be dead and gone. And now Israels....the very ones who wanted to co-exist found themselves the target of this and now I would guess most of them no longer care and believe the very same thing as Hamas and many of the Gazan population. So who pray tell is right and who then is wrong based on their experience. Division only creates smaller and smaller number of people in connection. Multiplication/addition of more dialogue, bigger thinking grows connection. Wouldn't it be amazing if all politicians, all terrorist groups (yes Hamas is) and all dictators etc. were all forced to stand back and shit up and then all people of the world sat down for that day in front of someone they thought was "the other" and had no choice but to talk, ask questions, be in silence together and more. What might possibl happen......from a Canadian...born here, 7th generation sorry to see what has happened to this country in the last 5 years with so many groups that are more worried about "their" countries than the country they chose to become part of. We never used to be tribal and now....Trudeau has ensured we all look at our differences first and our hearts last.

I would say to think we have a wonderful model of society right now you would probably need to be a religious extremist, so brainwashed. We are human after all. But I've spent time there and compared to where I come from, I much preferred the place and the politics that I was aware of. Plenty I didn't like too. Most of that highly subjective. Most things are relative, absolutes being childish fantasy. Better can usually be achieved and should obviously be aimed for. Rather than reversing into the kind of territory despots and fanatics can seize power within. This seems to be the territory a hell of a lot of the Earths nations are 'slipping' into

@@mr-iz8cx Yes I have spent time in Germany over the years and I enjoyed it. However the problem with Germany in my opinion is that immediately after the war the US and the UK installed a political system that was basically made up of middle and low ranking Nazis. They did this because they were worried that if they didn't the communists would take power and forge links with the Soviet Union. The reactionary nature of German society wasn't obvious during the Cold war but as the years have gone by the nastiness of German politics has become plain to see. During Iraq's aggressive war against Iran Germany supplied it with chemical weapons which killed hundreds of thousands of Iranians, many of them very young men. During the break up of Yugoslavia when Croatia broke away from Serbia Germany immediately recognised its independence which emboldened it and made it behave in a very arrogant way towards its Serbian minority. Basically it made the war much more savage than it otherwise would have been. In the last few years we have seen Germany supplying weapons to Ukraine and turning a blind eye to the very prominent Nazi elements in that country even though they venerate WW2 Nazi criminals and glorify Ukraine's collaboration with Nazi Germany. Now we the true grotesque nature of German politics revealed by the fact that its arms industry is profiting from genocide. Yes culturally I have enjoyed Germany over the years but politically it has always been sinister and dark. It should be remembered though that this is due in no small part to the US and the UK and that is true of both post war and pre war Germany.

Where has genocide or mass murder not been committed. South America, South East Ausa, Australia, Russia, Ireland, England, no where. It's a corruption of power. Used for greed and fear of other. Those people are beginning to die out and it seems the interest of young people in their own future is somewhat limited. Climate change is not the only global problem. But when it comes to thermonuclear war, climate change is no longer a problem because we'll all be dead! So the young need to take over from the old and continue to stand for peace and force governments to stop wars. Of course a substantial lack of democracy in almost all western countries makes that very difficult (Switzerland being somewhat of an exception).

All of us, UK, US, Germany, Australia, France, etc. We are all completely shocked at the Orwellian nature of this massacre that we are all funding at some level, the U.S., my government, undoubtedly the most complicit. I am 45 year old, voted for the Democratic Party my whole life. I’m a lifelong construction worker, not the stereotype that my party is saying is who are opposing Israel. THE US OPPOSITION TO ISRAEL IS MASSIVE RIGHT NOW, ABSOLUTELY I have to be honest, I am totally shocked by the level of speech policing in Germany. I had no idea that it was this insane. I am hearing similar levels of speech policing in the UK. The U.S. has fortunately not had literal speech policing yet, but it is very McCarthy like and people have definitely lost jobs and faced heavy obstacles for extremely benign comments. If you’re like me, you’ve always wondered how things like the holocaust occurred. How is something like that even possible? Now we all understand. 1/2 our populations don’t really pay attention at all, they are consumed with their own lives and just do not opt to inform themselves. Many of those people kind of go where their political parties tell them. The other half, those who are here, are left begging others to witness what is going on and then a portion of the 50% are here to carry water for the atrocities. Sometimes they are motivated by: money, bias, and in this modern age, clout, which fairly can motivate both sides. So, right now, the 50% of us that pay attention, spend much of our time trying to convince one another to change sides, which at this point is rare. In my opinion, the best way to change minds, is to spend more time to capture the people who are not engaged and focus narrowly on the people who can be moved. But the best way to move the masses is to create a sense of overwhelming majority. This is what Bot farms do, the leave the Facebook comment reader, twitter reader, KZread, etc., with the feeling of, “”wow, this is a settled argument””. Unfortunately, the 50% of people that have chose not to engage in this are more likely to be persuaded by the wind than a good argument. Then when the numbers become too obvious to hide, our media will finally relent (the disgusting cowards that they have shown themselves to be). After the media moves, our governments will absolutely move. After our governments move, then Israel will move or else they face massive consequences. But yes, I am with all of you friends from many nations. This issue has been the most shocking political issue of my lifetime. I confess that I did not realize the insanity the Israel has become AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THAT THEIR MANY YEARS OF LOBBYING AND MESSAGING WOULD CAUSE OUR NATIONS TO FUND THEM IN THE MOST DISTURBING SLAUGHTER OF A WESTERN NATION ON ANOTHER NATION, in my time. Now, I understand that horror that my country has brought on to the people of Iraq, Afghanistan and through meddling many other places. I understand that the nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the worst a nation could do to another nation. But we came together as a world and did the impossible. We established international rules of humanity. THOSE RULES ARE DESTROYED BECAUSE OF ISRAEL AND OUR GOVERNMENTS. But even as bad as Iraq and other wars the U.S. meddled in and/or started, post war, we never starved people, stole their land, killed their intellectual population, targeted doctors and nurses, demolished universities, hospitals and cultural centers just to minimize the potential of returning. Even the horrors of the slave trade and the Holocaust on natives a hundred years ago and back, we do not view those as patriotic moments. We all know that those moments are ugly scars that we have to acknowledge forever. We honor those in naming roads, bridges, cities after them. We have not done enough, but we certainly don’t celebrate our role in mass slaughter and genocide. But then there is this, the moment for many of us where we ask the question: “”ARE WE THE BAD GUYS?!”” We certainly are right now and I can’t for the life of me understand why we are willing to compromise so much, to enable a nation to lose itself in racist nationalism that seeks to eliminate a people. Even the cynical reasons: money, alliances, etc. huh?!?! None of those are anywhere near equitable for the consequences. Joe Biden will lose his reelection. I CANNOT VOTE FOR HIM, I CANT AND I WONT. Unfortunately, 10% of the Democratic Party is not showing up for him. We are not stupid, we know the other guy is worse, but supporting a murderer is something many of us simply will not do. The logic is, the defeat will ultimately be productive, when/if we can force the Democratic Party to abandon Israel, which would never happen unless we called their bluff.

Too much in this to answer to all, but there are many moments that made me pause and maybe not in the way you hoped. I appreciate the thought you put into this, but also have to say that as soon as anyone starts with "all of us" "we are all completely shocked".... As soon as anyone feels they have the right to speak for the masses I take a step back. No one gets to speak for me and quiet my voice or presume to understand the layers of nuance that go into my perspective. Then came the assumption of "the 50% of us that pay attention". This screams of someone deciding there are not only just two perspectives but that there is only one right one out of the two and the so called right one are the only part of the population of the world that are smart enough. Billions of people all with their own learning, culture, life experiences and more and because of that there are just as many perspectives. Not just 2. Changing minds by focusing in narrowly on those who can be "captured" is the same language and intent cults use. We are living in a world of cults right now. People deciding they know more than the next ensuring they repeat that enough until they wear down those who are tired of the fighting and then demanding they uphold the truth as decided by the ones who believe they are more intelligent. Heck that is exactly how Hamas works and why they managed to turn Gaza from the beautiful seaside country into one where the people are too afraid to have a voice that does not agree. It is that or be removed. "This issue has been the most shocking political issue of my lifetime" Seriously...how old are you? Look around the world. I guess it wasn't ISIS slaughtering every group they disagreed with about 7 years ago. Ask the Yazidis about it if there are enough left in the world to ask. Or even easier...what about Ukraine and Russia.....The country that world had agreed was one of the most corrupt became the victim after the US and others did exactly what they had promised in a treaty after WW2 not to do. Or I guess you missed what is going on in Nigeria as well over the last couple of years, or is that not a country worth looking at? How about the destruction of so many South American countries due to the underhanded gaming of the US powers, Vietnam? Ummm.....I could keep going, but really. Just because the media is focused on this is no reason for the thinking people of the world , as you seem to imply you are, to pretend the rest of the world and all its issues don't exist. Be offended, try for better but this moral high ground that everyone keeps sitting on, is nothing but a pile of sand, and when the ground shakes that sand is going to collapse under the weight of the numbers who are trying hard to hold to the high point.

Yep, that did shock me. When Israel makes Putin look like a peace activist? Yes, that was surprising to me. But also, both the casualty counts in this incidents are not even close, as far as civilian death is concerned, as far as children are concerned. I think 5000 yazidis died and in Ukraine about 10,000 civilians have died. Both are tragic but not even close to what’s occurring in Gaza. Israel has displaced nearly all of the citizens? Gaza has been almost totally flattened. Over a million people are running from place to place, trying to avoid being massacred, living in tents if they are lucky, eating animal food and grass in some situations. I think you are trying to be witty and intellectual by rolling your eyes and minimizing what is occurring in Israel is extremely unique. When have we seen a western nation, politically speaking, starve a nation of people intentionally? If you do not believe that starvation is being used as a weapon, you are foolish, at this point. When have we seen a western nation, which Israel is, despite their location, intentionally shooting civilians, targeting hospital workers, journalists, etc.? When have we seen a western nation ethnically cleanse its neighbors? I’m 45, I certainly have not seen it in my lifetime. You can pretend like this event is nothing compared to some other event, but you’re just ignoring variables. I know there have been large scale massacres by militias in Africa and more rogue nations. The point you are missing is I haven’t seen a western nation dip so far into terrorism, propaganda, ethnic cleansing and likely genocide. The fact that OUR GOVERNMENTS are participating in this is the unique variable. I am well aware of my country’s misgivings and they are certainly not small, but this event is the closest thing to Nazism that we’ve seen a western nation engage in, in my 45 years of life. I was trying to avoid that historical comparison, but it’s become the easiest way to explain the behavior of the Israelis. I am also referring to the citizens of Israel, at least in part and a large majority of them. A large swath of the Israel citizenry has become as radicalized, if not more, than any radicalized Islamic nation. That sort of racist nationalism, only occurs, if its people are being fed a diet of hate. I’ve watched countless interviews with everyday Israelis arguing that Palestinians are not real, there is no such thing. I can’t think of anything more racist than denying someone’s existence. But it gets worse, I’ve seen children scream that they want to “kill all Palestinians” including babies. In many instances, they around many other children who are laughing and agreeing. I’ve seen many argue, loudly and without shame, that they want to blow up the entire Palestine, again, often with others agreeing. As we speak there are settlers already moving into Gaza. There are real estate conventions in Israel and around the world to sell off Gaza while the people are currently in famine induced by Israel. Yes, this is unique. I can tell you don’t get it because of some sort of bias I am unaware of. Again, we are dealing with a nation that has become so radicalized that all the genocide alarms are ringing! All the fascist alarms are ringing! Israel is turning into a pariah state right before our eyes and if you don’t see the magnitude of this moment, I’m certainly wasting my breath on you.

@@oceanbreathyogawellness4487 lastly, this statement about “being offended…moral high ground” as it pertains to this issue?!? If you are not offended and if you can’t stand on a moral high ground, as it pertains to a likely genocide, then you are without morals. I would hope that you feel a moral high ground when witnessing the atrocities I’ve mentioned above. It should offend you that your government is enabling such misery on people. If it does not and your senses are not offended? Then I’d say, maybe you’re trying too hard to not be offended. Maybe you’ve swallowed the group think that is highlighting “virtue signaling, wokeness, moral high grounds, and offended by everything”. The people constantly criticizing people and using these terms are also participating in group think. I’d argue that using these tag lines on a possible genocide, is a litmus test that indicates you’ve taken these terms too far and maybe you’re engaging in your own form of virtue signaling, that is, virtue signaling to the people who fit nicely in your box. We all fit neatly into some kind of box, even the folks who bend themselves into a pretzel, both figuratively and somewhat literally, trying not to fit in a box, are actually residents of a very large box. Again, if you’re not offended, outraged and feel moral high ground over the behavior of what we have seen occur in Israel ? If that is the case then I’d do some more yoga. Namaste

Since they are not allowed to rapport from Gaza. all who only see danish news and do not search on you tube etc.. Many do not understand enough English when there is no text. There is youtube channel "Syriana Analysis", and that person (I don't remember his name) is Syrian immigrant who live in Germany. He has quite lot to tell about what Germany is today. I would recommend to listen at least video which was released 2 weeks ago, which headline in picture "Why they call me an Assadinist?" and actual headline in video is "Exposing US Imperialism: A conversation with Kevork Almassian". There is for example mention, that when there was attempt to kill (or at least attack with weapon against) him, but he run from situation and there was eye witness for the attack, and police deleted everything about the eye witness and told that he just made up whole story, no one attacked against him. And that is not first time I hear German police and authorities act this kind of way. It seems to be somewhat common for them to manipulate cases. Like in case of that German woman, who went to Dombas region, and published about crimes made by state of Ukraine, there were charges against her in Germany because of that, but in official letter where they told about that to her, they also told that they do not want hear her. How it is even possible, to have charges against some one, and tell that person, that judge do not want hear what you have to say about to defend yourself?? I do not think colonialist and imperialist nations can ever be in "right side of history" unless they turn against those ideas. Germany and most of other European nations never did. Whole Europe is in wrong side of history. Been for centuries. Being less horrible in single questions does not change the big picture. (I am a Sámi person, indigenous people from northest part of Europe or most north-west part of Eurasia. We are the barbarians, while civilized people are the ones who create genocides. But the whole word "barbarian" is created to be discriminating and racist: "we are better than those barbarians, so we can kill them as we - civilised - please")

Aw c'mon....you can want to support the people of Gaza without pouring out BS. It is what it says. 2 million Arabs live in Israel....no problem, lawyers, judges, business owners, teachers. They have citizenship and all the rights. Gaza was open for everyone, they pulled the Jews out of Gaza and handed it over. People flowed in and out, and then one terror attack, then larger terror attacks, and then they became so big that Israel felt they needed to close it off ...along with Egypt to keep people safe. So when they say river to sea how do you think it will go for anyone they don't like? And equal rights in whatever country? I can say that in Canada they are beginning to step on the rights we hold true and valued. And that is after getting far more than the first nations here tend to get. NOTHING is black and white and as simple as you make it. I hope the people of Gaza are free of this madness soon, but if they bow to Hamas I fear no one will ever be free of any of this madness....history will just repeat century after century.

As Yanis often said: it's not about left and right, but the centralization of power and subjugation of the will of the people. if you are against the suppression of the supporters of palestine, you should be critisizing the german ministry of the interior's sending the anti terror unit gsg-9 to raid the lawyer of the "Polizisten für Aufklärung e.V". The man has a toddler and they raided him just for being politically active. No charges, just pure intimidation.
