E71: The dark side of the EU

Corruption. Bags of cash. Links to organised crime. Using intimidation to stop people asking questions.
We always knew this EU was authoritarian and crooked. But a series of recent scandals is bringing its dark side into full relief.
The Qatar corruption probe is rocking the European Parliament, having already claimed the jobs of several top MEPs. While over in Frankfurt, the European Central Bank is demanding legal fees to intimidate our own organisation, DiEM25. All because we dared to ask for information that should be publicly available.
What’s going on? How did we get here? And what can everyday people do to get the transparent, accountable institutions they deserve? Our panel, including our own Yanis Varoufakis, our German party leader Julijana Zita and political director Erik Edman, investigates. Join in the live discussion!

At first glance European Central Bank may look like a Central Bank without a state but it has its state called Germany. Euro currency "printed" by the European Bank is just renamed deutsche mark. Every Euro zone country gave up their currency except Germany. They simply renamed it, that's all. That is why Germany is the biggest beneficiary of the common currency in Eurozone without direct responsibility for Euro in case of any potential financial crisis. Very cosy arrangement for Germany.

uhmmm, actually, my country Czech Republic havent accepted the Euro yet, and i hope we wont, but our politics went to shit for last 15 years and we have de facto no major leftist party, and currently, our political establishment went full send mafia corruption, and in the energy crisis, instead of taxing the energy companies more, they gave them tax holidays for a year. Its costing us 2billion CZK (93mil dollars +-?)every month. The EU energy price cap is just a clown theater, it has no point, cause it was actually even higher than most of the energy prices on stock market. I gave away all of my money twice for last 2 years just for electricity and im still in debt. Its like being raped in broad daylight on the main street and nobody cares.

The german has the biggest industry and by making the free market in all of eu, it was obvious for them to be the most powerful and outcompete the other states. Thats just capitalist competition and for that reason that fking euro follows the german economy so much. They knew that from start and with hartz 4 they made it happen since they fked over german workers to conquer the eu market and so the euro.

None of this is at all surprising. Living in U$A, hearing about the slow creeping creation of EU first as an easing of trade & movement between European countries, then morphing into one currency & unelected group of "leaders," the tightening noose was evident. I was briefly in Brussels in 1977. I was struck by how much it had changed since previous visit in 1967. Clearly the huge multi nat'l corporations moved in & conspicuously dominated the cityscape. When EU began, I knew it was somehow connected to what I had seen. Of course, the huge corporate monopolies which had taken over U$A were doing the same in Europe. Huge profits, secrecy, owning of communication, creating dominant narrative & corruption as deep & wide as it can go are the norm when only money & power count. Yes, we the people are sucked into it too. All is fair in "business." Getting the best of a "deal," lying & cheating to "get ahead" and stealing from your employer (whom you know is stealing from you your labor & time) become badges of honor as long as you don't get caught. "Everybody does it."

One aspect of the “axis divides” of Europe…: The term «Financial Engineering” does not exist in the Norwegian language, nor any Northern European wiki-page except for Icelandic. The term DOES exist in English across our universities as a master degree. So, ordinary people (wage takers) never discuss a term they don’t learn or hear about. Same for so many words, like “financialisation” (my iPhone marks the word as misspelled…). Why are we surprised…? 🤓 (DiEM25 member 🔥)

As a Scot, who is an anti capitalist, Socialist, developing Marxist, internationalist, and an Independenista, I am torn when it comes to us rejoining Europe. I voted to join back in the day, voted to remain, and resent losing my status as an European, but I am wary of rejoining an economic, p olitical and legal grouping which does not promote the General Good . I had no illusions about the credentials of the EU, its capitalism for Europeans. Competition/partnership with the USA. Scotland, when independent will revisit our joining. Would full integration be best or a 'friendly agreement' between neighbours. Not a pressing issue but suspect and hope it will be.

The central banking scheme is a pox on humanity. Sir Josiah Stamp (former head of the British central banking system) quotation: Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The Bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create deposits, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take it away from them, all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a much happier world.

Isaac Asimov wrote the three laws of robotics: 1) a robot may not injure a human or allow a human to come to harm; 2) robots must obey orders from humans, except where such orders would conflict with the first law; and 3) a robot must protect its own existence as long as it does not conflict with previous laws. The three laws of corruption are slightly different: 1) he who holds public office has the right (divine or infernal) to allow himself to be corrupted for personal gain; 2) those who have been corrupted must honestly share what they have received with other authorities in order to be protected; 3) whoever is caught because of corruption has to remain silent so as not to be murdered by his cronies. Europe likes to be seen as the cradle of civilization. But the truth is that it cannot even be considered the cradle of corruption. I know this will hurt the pride of Europeans, but you have to look at things holistically. As corruption was already an important phenomenon thousands of years before Christ (it was practiced in the first human civilizations), corrupt Europeans can say: "We are only apprentices of corruption and therefore innocent."

'Corruption' which undermines central government corruption may often not be corruption but anti-corruption. Do you really want your parking tickets going to, say, a killer war machine as in the case of anglo countries? But of course things should work IF the system is a good one that should work... these are complex case by case matters where logic is often sidetracked by sophists/lawyers.

I very much enjoy Diem 25 Yanis is a great guy, I am also a big fan of Roger Waters another great guy, although he was absent on this occasion. The work you all do is always interesting and note worthy. At the start of Russian military operations in the Early part of 2022, there was immediately condemnation of Russia from almost everyone in the west, including Diem25. For a good while Roger Waters seamed to be absent from your discussions. I noted from yourselves and in particular Yanis, nobody mentioned the role played by the USA and the west, NATO. (I may have missed it, if that’s the case I apologise). It seamed to me obvious, that there may have been a friendly punch up between Roger and Yanis, as Roger and Yanis were coming from two different positions! Later as Russia had pulled back I noticed Roger on a different platform speaking truth to power in an American media outlet about how Russia was pushed into this conflict by NATO forces amassing for an attack, I think in the Donbass region and it was this that Russia responded to in defence of its Russian speakers. Notably Roger emphasised the need to read about the historical context of the situation and getting facts right. Seemingly Yanis didn’t pick the book up, however I think Roger was on your platform fairly recently. I was expecting more reaction from Roger than I got. I am now up to date with Dim 25 and you’ve had some great discussion this time around, but no Roger. For what it is worth I don’t support Russia’s current Capitalist political system, as I am very much a socialist, but I also don’t support the US and NATOs expansionist exploitative policies with the intention if dismantling Russia. 25,000,000 Russian died in world war two fighting that odious ideology of the 1930s and 40s. As far as I understand Ukraine military is rife with these odious factions. Going back to Roger very recently did a speech to the UN. The speech was brilliant but he had to get something of his chest, and that was Russia’s illegal invasion of the Ukraine, which I think came across as a little insincere, as I don’t believe, Roger believed what he had said. I myself can recognises that their should have been due proses through the UN I think, before they invaded, but in realty, time was against Russian as the had to save thier russian speaking folk, as the west had scuttled the Minsk agreements of the past and Russia was caught between a rock and a hard place. So Roger if you ever read this I’m fairly certain that you actually don’t believe it was morally wrong to assisting their fellow Russians, even if it was technically illegal. Morally I also don’t think that any compassionate minded person would think Russia had committed some heinous act in what they did. Then there’s the negotiations that were scuppered in March 22, (which would have left Ukraine independent) by a very dangerous man called Boris. Lets also not forget the massive amounts of western finance flowing to enriching the western oligarchs and the industrial military complex, whilst many ordinary folk in the west are struggling. Finally. I hope Diem25 push for everyone to get up and march anti war, anti nukes, as that hand moves ever closer to midnight.

I fear that the common belief in the importance of hierarchies is much older than capitalism and much more ingrained in society than you think. "Father knows best" is a common expression and is a tell-tale sign of it. Call it patriarchy or whatever, but it cuts very deep. With Dušan I believe it is a bad thing, but I fear it might be even stonger and older than capitalism itself.

Well Yanis, corruption is simply a factor in all systems and it's a matter of degree. If the markets are truely free it will provide competition and the laws should ( and does to some extend) limit monopolies. It is all in Burke's works btw. The state's roll is to lay down the boundaries of freedom/ manipulation so at least some leeway can be provided for freedom loving citizens. The classic mistake communists make is that they can set up a system without or with limited corruption..
