E-Flite P-47 Razorback 1.2m BNF Basic with AS3X and SAFE Select - Model AV8R Announcement & Review

Ойын-сауық

The easiest to fly 1.2 m Warbird taildragger we've flown yet! In model AV8R Episode 90, we feature E-flite's new P-47 Razorback 1.2m V2! Pilots have been asking for an updated and upgraded version of the 1.2 Thunderbolt for a while now, and here it is! With a better and more capable ESC and receiver, the 1.2 P-47 is now rated for 3s or 4s batteries, so it has crazy power and the option to program reverse. It still has AS3X and SAFE select, but now there's also a load of SMART telemetry available, some very useful, and some just plain fun...we LOVE a G meter! It retains the V1's multiple scale features and the original paint scheme so there will be parts available for both versions for a long time to come! In this review we give you all the details and multiple flight demos that cover 3s and 4s performance for the scale, sport, and crazy pilots among us! Enjoy!

    I enjoyed your video about a month ago, but recently stumbled across a good video on YT that features P-47s from the 9th Air Force. It was filmed during the last part of WW II and is in color. Your schedule might be just too busy, but if you have a little time I think you would enjoy it. It is titled: "Thunderbolts - The Conquest of the Reich" I have seen the one showing P-47 action in Italy, but had never seen this one. Thanks for your excellent channel content and the 'learning' you help us with!

    @@ModelAV8RChannel Yes Adam, I love the Jug and may get one sometime in the future. I can't believe they put plastic gear servos in a $350 plane, seems like a bad choice for customer service.

  • @ModelAV8RChannel

    @ModelAV8RChannel

    Жыл бұрын

    Tony I think a channel or two may have given a lot of modelers the wrong impression about servos. Yes, metal gear servos are superior to plastic gear servos. You add digital and high voltage to the mix and that makes them even better. That said, there is a purpose for everything. Keep in mind, this is not a 3D/XA Edge 540, its a P-47. You hear "junk" as a word used to describe plastic gear servos a lot on a channel or two, but think about what they are doing and what they are doing it with. These are guys that want to 3D/XA every plane, so they push the hinges to the point of having to be replaced. It's not that the hinges are bad, its that they are forcing twice the throw intended to make the planes do what they want. As for the servos, now they are being asked to hold a control surface in position against the stress of being deflected much farther than intended, and while the plane is in a gyroscopic tumble like a knife edge spin or crankshaft. All this in a plane intended for scale or sport flying. This is a warbird...it was intended to be flown either like a warbird or like a sport plane. The plastic geared servos are fine for this. I have several warbirds with plastic gear servos, I fly them like you see in this video, and they have 100+ flights, some have more than 200 flights. The servos work fine to this day. Just something to think about, but in my opinion, based on my experience, these servos will perform as expected...if the expectations are realistic. That said...nothing wrong with pushing a plane past it's intended envelope if that is what floats a pilots boat, but doing that is what makes the servos inadequate, not that it was ill equipped. Anyway, just my two cents. That and 6 bucks will get you a coffee...Lol.

    Hi Adam, Great video as always. One thing I noticed on the V1 was the elevator pushrod flexes during up elevator input. I corrected this by reaching in the fuselage side vent with a stick that had foam glue on the end and glued the pushrod housing down to the foam bulkhead. This provided more up elevator throw and also made the elevator feel less mushy. For me it was a night and day improvement in handling and control. I've never even tried the V1 on 3S 😮

    Spot on with the CG and your recommended setup AV8R, maiden went flawless. This P47 hauls I was very heavy on the throttle and with a 4S 3300 pack I only got 3:30 on the timer.... I've ordered some SMC 4S 3600 packs 75C which are the same weight as the Spektrum 4S 3200 50C packs. Will see if that helps with performance and with a little more timer! Also note the motor and spinner got pretty hot, looking at the dummy plastic engine they didn't remove the material out fully where the air flow goes in... So I'll be cleaning that up with an exacto knife to allow for better airflow. Thanks again for the help yesterday!

    Yet another great review of another great RC aircraft Adam. E-Flite have found a sweet-spot for sure with their 1.2m wingspan warbirds: this P47 Thunderbolt is no exception. I have their original 1.2m P47 Thunderbolt (V1?). It flies so well that it is difficult to forget that it is a warbird as it's so easy to get sucked into aerobatic manoeuvres that a warbird is not supposed to execute! It also has remarkable stability at low air speeds, and in strong crosswind landings. The E-Flite P47 has graduated into my Windy Fleet. When I acquired this plane I noticed a step-change in my landing skills: to land not just this craft, but the other craft in my fleet, with greater confidence and accuracy. I can take off with the tail high allowing it to ascend naturally and to return with 2-point landings with the tail high running on until the tail naturally settles. The standard 4 blade prop on the P47 is so damn fragile: it only has to have the slightest contact with the ground and another £15 is lost. I had switched to a two-blade prop with greater diameter and greater pitch: MA 11.5x7/5. I now fly with a three-blade 11x7x3 prop as a compromise to look more realistic than the two-blade. Three benefits: a more durable prop, more efficient and less torque. Flights on a 4S 2200mah HD are 6 mins rather than 4 mins and the take off roll/turn to the left is less pronounced. I wholeheartedly endorse increasing the surface movements. I also recommend adding some aileron differential for smoother turns. E-Flite 1.2m wingspan warbirds are highly recommended.

    Wow! Another amazing presentation of the plane and also of your fabulous capabilities as a pilot. Your scale takeoffs and landings (on rails) are heart warming and a pure delight to watch! Also the slo-mo like scale maneuvres are a joy and fun to watch. Time to concentrate on details that are way too fast to enjoy on other channels. Thanks so much for this well spent time on YT. 👍 I just recently decided for the P-51D Cripes, so, no more war birds for the very moment (even though I do like the looks and flight pattern of the P-47). I was surprised how much the Mustang pulls to left even with very carefully throttling up. I have to admit though, that my first attempts were on Safe only, which restricts rudder to 70% or so and there was no chance even with fully pushing the rudder to the right to counter for the momentum. The suggestion you gave in this video - enhancing the rudder throw by moving clevis one hole inwards might be applicable to the Mustang as well - what do you think?

We also have lots of pictures from the pilots' families of Jugs that made it home with two cylinders shot off the engine, all 4 prop blades curled around the cowl, a 20mm cannon hole in a prop blade, half a wing missing, the entire LE of the wing bashed-in from cutting down trees, and other extreme amounts of damage that would have shredded other fighters. That's where my plane is at with a 4s 3300. I haven't maidened yet because I was concerned about the CG. If 80mm is where the plane you flew on the video is at. Then I should have no problem with mine. Right?

    Hey Tommy. Yep that is where we flew it. No issues for us. Usually the manual CG is very conservative. That said CG is a personal thing, and it works in conjunction with the rest of the set up. This set up is great for us, but if you are nervous about it error to the side of caution. Fly it more forward first, then move it back progressively until you are where we're at, and see if you like it there better.

The P-47 1.2 is the easier taildragger to handle for sure, and I like that it has a traditional battery bay like your T-28. The P-51 has a slide in/slide out tray that makes battery changes and getting the balance right a bit more difficult. With the P-47 you just strap the battery in fore or aft to make a CG change just like your T-28.

I never hand launched it, but it would be a piece of cake with the power it has. I've noticed with warbirds sometimes the trick if the grass isn't ideal is to take the gear doors/covers off. They tend to be the thing that grabs the grass. Of course once the grass gets to a certain length there is nothing you can do with a smaller plane except hand launch it.

I've tried 4S 2200, 4S 2800 (SMC) and 4S 3300! Brian Phillips build video shows the same thing tail heavy on the CG marks and RC Geeks older video he moved the CG back to 68-70. One person said it required several clicks of elevator trim to make it fly level.... Wondering if you have any insite, I've considered adding weight but I'm seeing almost 2 oz needed with the 4S 3000 and that seems excessive.

    Hey Rob. Not sure if you watched the set-up portion of our video with the set-up info page, but we have the CG at 80mm. We explain that and a few other things we changed. The plane flies fantastic there...which we also show, including stall characteristics and recovery. Most manuals are very conservative when it comes to CG so the planes are less sensitive for a larger group of skill sets. Even at 80mm, with our set-up the plane is not too sensitive (to us), but you could always program rates or use more expo if needed. I for sure wouldn't add weight. At 80mm the plane in no way feels or tests "tail heavy". When level and inverted you will still need down elevator to hold it, and on the 45 degree inverted up line test it still faded towards the canopy as it should. If it were tail heavy, it would tuck towards the gear. Where the manual suggests the CG, it would be nose heavy...and flying tests would show that. I would just put the battery in the center of the tray, and fly it. Anything from a 2200 to 3200 4s is fine.

    That is a legitimate concern. Silver planes do get hard to see in certain skies. It has a lot to do with time of day and the suns placement in relation to where you're standing. This was early in the morning and the sun was to my right and slightly behind me. When its low like that and on one side the plane will be a crisp, clear silhouette on the sun side, and a bit hard to see on the other. Keeping it close helps, as does flying more mid day.

I did notice the FMS has crappy wheels. I am trying to find a good fit in Dubro or some other quality wheel. Hey thanks, and great flying!

  • @ModelAV8RChannel

    @ModelAV8RChannel

    9 ай бұрын

    Hey there Dale. So a couple of things just FYI. The 1.2 is made for E-Flite by FMS. So the quality comparison is from the same company, but they didn't mess up with the 1.2...I'll explain. I know which KZread channel you've been watching by your comments, Lol. I love Jon to death, he is a buddy of mine. The thing you have to remember about Jon is he is doing the same thing with every plane...which is pushing it well past what it was ever designed and outfitted for. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the plastic gear servos and foam hinges on the 1.2. However, if you are doing what Jon does...which is force the hinges to deflect much farther than they are designed to and putting flight pressures on the servos by trying to fly it like it is an Extreme Flight Edge, then yeah...you may have some failures. Forcing a sport/scale plane to become a 3D monster will do that, Lol. Also, Jon has a lot of unplanned incursions with the ground while pushing the limit like he does, and that ain't good for hinges and servos either. Nothing wrong with what Jon does mind you, but it's just not what the planes are designed for in many cases. For what its worth I put about 250 flights on a 1.2 T-28 with the same servos/hinges with no issues from either. Then again, I flew it like a warbird, not a 3D/XA plane. Different size planes require different equipment if a company is smart. The 1.2's are scale, but not super scale. The lack of sequencing gear doors, non retractable tail wheel, a lower KV motor and bigger prop, and the use of foam hinges and plastic gear servos are all part of the plan for that level of plane to keep the cost down, keep it lighter, and make it easier to fly compared to other warbirds that size. The 1500 is far more scale with way more detail/scale features, but it is bigger and the bigger wing can carry all of that extra weight easier than a smaller wing could. Also at that size the price can be higher to cover the cost of the extras easier. It has more mass, and therefore puts more stress on things like servos and hinges...so those are of higher quality as a result. I've flown both, and both are awesome airplanes that have their advantages and disadvantages. If you want a budget scale P-47 that is easy to fly, looks great, and is easier to store and transport, then the 1.2 is the ticket. If you want a more detailed scale P-47 that has all the scale features you could ask for, has more presence in the air, flies great, and the price and storage/transportation requirements are not an issue for you...the 1500 is the most scale foam P-47 on the market today, and that is your huckleberry. As warbirds go, they are both easy to fly and a pleasure in the air. The 1500 does give you the sense that the saying "Bigger flies better" is true though...especially if you put AS3X in it and tune it to that plane to level the playing field so to speak. The extra mass gives it an edge over the smaller plane in the wind. The 1500 does require a bit more rudder skill, especially on takeoff due to more power/torque, but it still isn't hard in my opinion. Sorry for the long detailed response. I'm trying to educate folks and give them context about some of the things they may have the wrong idea about. Hope this helps...enjoy your Thunderbolt!

I started with numerous control surface checks, safe select and As3X active, low rates(what the manual called for) and brand new 4S 2200mah batteries and she would not lift off the ground. Finally on my 4th attempt, ran out of runway and slammed into an embankment at probably 40mph. I was even using half flaps! And still NO LIFT. Needless to say I’m beyond frustrated and vowing to sell off even magazines and books with the letters R and C in them 😂😢 CG was spot on. I truly just don’t get it. Never even left the ground. Even verified my elevator direction after the crash. All normal. That’s two planes in a row I’ve spent over $200 and never even gotten in the air.

  • @ModelAV8RChannel

    @ModelAV8RChannel

    2 ай бұрын

    Dang man I hate to hear that. Just a few things that may have something to do with it. I'm guessing you were doing the maiden in SAFE, and probably low rates. The downside to SAFE is it limits control throw, and in a low rate you'd have very little up elevator deflection...possibly not enough to get it flying. Also if you were at the manual CG, that is very nose heavy and would exacerbate that issue. Our suggested CG is a good bit farther back. So just for reference, here is how I do a maiden, and why I do it this way- I want full control throw, and sometimes I get more with mechanical adjustments if I deem the stock throws to be lacking. The reasoning is I want enough deflection to do whatever I need to do during the maiden, I can back the throw off later, but I can't add any if it turns out I took off without enough. I do the maiden in AS3X, not SAFE. Two reasons...I want the added control deflection/throw, and you want to test SAFE out up high after you trim the airplane. Often if you need a good bit of trim to get it to fly straight in AS3X mode, when you flip into SAFE the plane goes a bit astray...you fix this by mechanically adjusting in the trim so electronically you have no trim in. Also, I never do a maiden takeoff with flaps. You don't need flaps to takeoff with a model, and you want to test the flap to elevator mix up high, if it isn't right, you land without flaps, make adjustments and test until you know that is right, and then you can use the flaps knowing it won't abruptly climb or dive. You could program in three rates...do your maiden takeoff in high rates, AS3X mode. Once you get it up you can play with the rates and see where you think you want to be. With more elevator throw, it will takeoff for sure, and you'll have enough throw to flare it into a nice landing as well...something else that is hard to do with very little elevator throw. I hope these tips help man.

    @@ModelAV8RChannel these are fantastic. I think you’re spot on. Low rates combined with safe, I just didn’t have enough elevator throw to get her up. On the final attempt I knew I was at the point of no return, she was either going to fly or hit the embankment. Super frustrating and I’ll chalk this up to a learning experience. I was actually able to hobble her back together and am going to try all these tips as soon as I can get a new prop en route. I’ll let you know how it goes! And as always, thanks for the content and expert advice. Priceless my friend!

    Adam, are there any other forums you are active on? I’ve got a couple more questions but don’t want to bog down your comments section.

    The best way is to email us. The channel email is in the about section on the channel home page. I'd just link it here for you but for some reason when I do that the comment doesn't show??

    I operate 4 of these 1 arf and 3 custom, and doing a Bud Mahurin exact replica from old spares, they need a V2 scheme not the same one , so easy to fly should be a trainer no electronics

    That's very cool. I respect the reasoning for keeping the old scheme. The factory that makes the P-47 will not make spare parts for a plane not in production, so Horizon elected to go with the original scheme so spare parts would be plentiful for pilots with the V1 or V2.
