I've been watching a few of these particular videos (brake By-pass etc) but how ironic is it that this young man to date is the only guy who actaully showed what is involved when you apply or disengage the hand brake lever!! I had no prior ideas as to what transpired here but this smart young bugger is a jump ahead of the field so obviously & now I know what takes place & how it takes place!! I knew something had to happen in & around the handbrake but had no real idea exactly what??? So well done indeed young man & keep up the excellent communication via your video!!!

Also for other viewers wondering, this method is really only needed for PIONEER radios. If you have a Kenwood or JVC or pretty much any other brand, you can just ground out the parking brake wire. The pioneers need 12 volt and ground sense to kick over the signal. Which is why you need a relay. Best video I have seen so far. Nice job.

update this does not work for the newest pioneer AVH-X8500BHS. I ended up having to do the switch instead which sucks. What happens is I was able to find an explanation of this somewhere that says Pioneer sends the signal out too fast to work with a relay. If someone can get this to work with a relay I would love to go that route but I couldn't get it to work.

Tom Severson Real Simple! Just give it a home made time delay. Take a polarized small capacitor, at least 25VDC and around 100ufd to 1000(better)ufd. The negative lead is marked with a black stripe and the (-) sign and will be put on the negative side of relay coil. The other or positive side of cap will go to posititve side of relay coil(85 and 86#'s) with the amp turn on/blue wire. You may also use a 10K ohm resister across as well to provide the drain when off.

Great description. I also have an alpine unit I'm wiring up and am wondering whether the relay will work, given that alpine expects the parking brake to be set, released, and set again, all while the foot brake is applied. From what I understand, the relay load is applied when the ignition is turned on, so it only fires once. Is there a way to make the relay fire twice?

Nice vid What8Really!! There are two blue wires, which one goes to the relay? The one that comes from the car or the one coming out from the stereo harness? Same thing for ground, I see you plug only one ground (Relay's pin 87). Thank you!

Not showing in your drawing, but did I hear you say to connect 87 and 87a to ground. Also when the radio comes on does the blue wire to 85 stay hot with voltage, or is it just momentarily hot? If it stays hot then the switch in the relay will move to 87a and stay connected to 87a until 85 goes dead because of no voltage. Let me know

If the relay is before the kill switch, it shouldn't be a problem. As for the 4-pin hook it up the same, the numbers should be the same. If not find which pins are for the coil and which are the switch. 4-pin relays a single throw, where as the 5-pin (the one I used) is double throw. They both do the same thing just with the 5-pin you can do/add more

I picked up a relay, and connected the pins to 30, 85, 86 and 87 as instructed, leaving 87a disconnected and it didn't work. In looking at the diagram on my relay, it shows the connection between 87a and 30, instead of 87 and 30 as shown in your diagram of the connection points (I didn't have this video available when doing the install). Should I therefore connect it to 30, 85, 86 and 87a and leave 87 disconnected? I assume so, but before I pull everything out again, I want to check.

One thought that just occurred...not sure this will work...what about jumping across 87 and 87a with the alpine H/U parking brake lead. Effectively, this would always be in the "on" state but I'm wondering if the latency in the switch would send an "off" signal to the H/U, as the switch changes states. Obviously, this is a question of whether the H/U has the ability to detect such a fast timing. Any thoughts on whether this would work? (I have no idea what the Alpine's timing needs to be.)

  • @What8Really

The e-brake relay would wok. I'm not 100% sure on the foot brake wire. From what I gather, after reading the manual, is that it needs a power signal. Try hooking it up like it says, along with the relay on the e-brake. It should still work while moving, you just need to apply the brakes (enough to turn the brake lights on). Let me know if it work or not.

I will admit, I may and most likely am wrong but, from what I understand is the remote wire only sends a temporary signal. That tells the relay and amp to turn on.

Good video but, not quite exactly what is happening here. You are saying it is a quick on and off pulse but, that's not exactly true. When your relay is off the green brake wire is getting ground through 87a since it is a normally closed connection. After you turn the radio one your relay switches and now 30 is connected to 87 instead of 87a. It just switches from one to the other, it does not go back to 87a until the radio is off and the relay coil loses power from the remote wire.

Can you draw a diagram for this? The Alpine I have (ICS-X7HD) is looking for a funny sequence of events. The two TR7 modules I bought are not working either. I'd rather not buy a third, but would rather just set it up on a relay or two. Thanks!

sorry had a blond moment there. lol. The ground is connected to the normally "on" terminal of the relay. so when the coil is energized by the remote wire it pulls and holds it to ground. I may have drawn it wrong on the diagram. Just as long as the numbers on the terminals are correct it will work.

No, the amp turn on wire will power up all your relays when wired correctly. The amps have the same relay circuit inside them on a smaller scale but identical. You may have to run the delay.

  • @csatola

Because head unit manufacturers got smart to that tactic and now their units look for a pulse, which the relay provides. A simple ground doesn't work with many head units anymore.
