Dynamic of football : Saudi Arabia 2-2 Bahrain (Last 4mins)

RIYADH - Ismail Abdullatifs dramatic stoppage time equaliser ensured Bahrain remain in contention for a place at next year's World Cup as they drew 2-2 in the second leg of their qualifying play-off against Saudi Arabia at King Fahd International Stadium.
The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute through Nasser Al Shamrani before Bahrain equalised five minutes before the break through Jaycee John.
But a thrilling final few minutes saw Saudi Arabia seemingly secure victory as they went ahead through 2005 AFC Player of the Year Hamad Al Montashari only for Abdullatif to grab an equaliser that ensures Bahrain progress on away goals to face New Zealand in a final play-off for a place at the World Cup.
The visitors started well and called Saudi goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah (pictured) into action in just the third minute when he had to palm over a dangerous Faouzi Aaish free kick.
Two minutes later Bahrain shot-stopper Sayed Jaafar did well to deny an onrushing Yasser Al Qahtani following a swift break from Saudi Arabia.
But the hosts went ahead soon after following a delightful passage of play in which Al Qahtani picked out Mohammed Noor with a pass and he in turn played a first-time ball into the path of Al Shamrani, who swept home from close range.
Sayed Jalal almost levelled for Bahrain midway through the half when he volleyed inches wide but the equaliser arrived in the 40th minute when John fired home from close range following Abdulla Omar's cross across the face of goal.
With Bahrain needing just a draw to qualify, Saudi Arabia were forced to press for a second and Abdullah Shuhail just failed to get on the end of an Al Qahtani cross early in the second-half.
But chances were at a premium and as the game entered stoppage-time it appeared the visitors had done enough to secure the result they needed.
However, Saudi Arabia went ahead in dramatic fashion when Al Qahtani chased a seemingly lost cause and successfully hooked the ball back into the area just before it went out of play and found Al Montashari, who powered a header into the back of the net.
The home fans were still celebrating when their side's hopes of a place at the World Cup were ended as Bahrain won a corner that Salman Isa floated into the box and Abdullatif sent a header into the bottom corner of the goal.

i remember this day i had been cycling through several different qualifiers on the web and i got to watch the last 5 mins of this, I will never forget it. even though neither team made it to the world cup, I think for everyone who was watching this game it is one of the most memorable and dramatic world cup qualifying moments of all time

From a completely neutral perspective i was screaming when Bahrain equalised..... what an incredible finish. Maybe helped New Zealand as Saudi would of been a tougher team to face (i believe anyway)

Peseiro: Entrenador de Arabia Saudi para las eliminatorias 2010 no pudo conseguir la clasificacion y quedo eliminado a manos de Bahrein en el último minuto. Cielos, la verdad no creo que Venezuela tampoco logre tal hazaña de llegar al repechaje y mucho menos clasificar a Catar 2022, ojala ocurra un milagro como fue el caso de Perú en 2018 y no perder las esperanzas. Estamos muy abajo en la tabla y necesitamos puntos urgentes :( Voy a tener fe en ti Peseiro, espero que hagas un buen trabajo con Venezuela; sino tenemos que tirar la toalla y nunca decirle "Hola" al mundial.

As an Iranian, I enjoyed not seeing both teams go to the World Cup because Saudi Arabia deliberately drew with North Korea to eliminate Iran. Bahrain cowardly beat Iran in Manama in 2002, and Bahraini players happily carried the Saudi flag after the game.
I'm Saudi and now looking back to it ... good for Bahrain ..

Saudi Arabia didn't play professionally. They scored, they should have calm down. Took the ball to the flank at 2:39. They played with a bit of arrogance after the goal, and really deserved to be eliminated by Bahrain.

why does it matter? Many teams DREAM of going to the world cup, even if they know theyre gona lose 50 - 0 in every game. Saudi arabia made it 4 times in a row. No matter how many losses, no matter how bad they played, they still made it...

why do british/australian commentators speak as if the game has ended before it has actually ended? When Saudi Arabia scored the first stoppage time goal, he said "Saudi Arabia has got a playoff with New Zealand." But the game wasn't over, as unlikely as it was for Bahrain. Why not just say "Saudi Arabia is within a couple of minutes with a playoff from New Zealand?" Another thing that pisses me off about british/australian commentators.

I don't have any idea why the guy at the very beginning of this video is wearing a shirt from gremio. So many more famous clubs out there... anyway, Saudi Arabia needed more malice. Any other more experienced team would put more players behind the line (and about 9 or so in the box during the corner) and try to pass the ball as much as possible.

you will see random football jerseys being worn of random clubs from around the world every now and then in this part of the world. it is quite common. it doesn't necessarily mean they support the club, just they like the design of the jersey.
