If you put the right handle on the side, and the lock of the left all the way to the top, you can cook on top of the fire area. If you can make the same way you have a vent on the right bottom, a rotational vent inside, with holes which can be done with a 3/4", several holes in a pattern that you can match with a rotational piece under, held in the center by a rivet in the center that allows the lid to rotate freely at will, and you make the holes one hole every other space on top, and to that lid, you install the lid in a way that you can rotate, with a little piece of metal that will need an orifice to be coming out from under, it'll be like an ear coming out, and hot but the orifice for it be like a little line so, you make your calculations, this ear or level can be like an inch or less high on the left pointing like to the corner where the locking mechanism of the left was, towards between 6 pm and 9 pm, there, so you make your calculations so that ear can be coming up the almost like a curvy line, and the lid under being coincidently with the center, you can place it on top before making the cut for the lever, put a screw in the center with both the lid and the top being concentrical, then where you decide where to leave the ear, there you trace the space for its opening, remember it will only need to be moved so both the holes in the lid and the holes on top of the fire department coincide for free open fire to cook or close so it fully smokes and, you will leave the flat surface cover with a pan so basically is a free stove to make rice or any other thing.

I have the same one and I have used it out in the cold weather and it works pretty good. Of course you have to keep adding more wood then normal to keep the temperature up. I have mine now for 5 years and it still looks new. Once in a while I'll use some high temp spray paint and repaint it. You must use high temp paint . Well happy cooking to all and Happy mother's day.

Hey Steve, I just got mine from Tractor Supply but I paid $170 or $180 with free shipping. I ordered some high temp caulk and gasket material to the fill gaps around the doors, chimney and between the firebox and smoke chamber. I have very little leakage but I also replaced the vent flap and made a bigger flap that closes better but after watching some of the smoker videos they don't recommend you having the vents closed at all. So I might have to remove or modify my new vent flap to allow it to open for better airflow.

I found that too much airflow through the firebox will raise the temps crazy high.

I bought this very unit a few weeks ago at $315 Canadian.....I used high heat clear silicone to go around the fire box where it attaches to the cooking chamber and around all the seams of the cooking chamber and used a fire place gasket for the doors and it made it much more air tight

@@SteeveeDan the only real complaint I have about this unit that you also mentioned is the fire box size....it makes it real tricky to stoke up the fire as you know the ash trey and fire box are 2 separate parts and you have to try and pull both out at the same time and try not to make a mess everywhere.

Not sure why they wouldn't include the gasket on this model the model I have is the wide-body and it has the gasket I've had mine for about 3 or 4 years now I've cooked a ton in it... water pan is definitely a must.. unless you live in a very humid place Also I've noticed noticed 30 to 50 degree variances in the temperature depending on where you're cooking so I would definitely get a grill probe to monitor your grate temps... overall for the price I like mine not a bad smoker I can lock it in at 230 to 250 degrees for about 8 hours.. banking a few handfuls of unlit briquettes off the one side of the basket and then lighting 3/4 chimney....gets me in the thin blue zone 😁 oh I also decked mine out in silver high heat header paint looks pretty bad ass and I put it up on a cart so it gets a little bit of a better draw oxygen wise... If you can run a good clean fire charcoal and wood chunks you can bang out some pretty good food CHEERS EH FROM CANADA EH....

Is it wide and deep enough to do rib racks without turning them at an angle? Also, how long of a cook can you get on one basket of charcoal?

  • @SteeveeDan

Specs taken from their website: 784 square Inch of total smoking area; Smokes up to 100lbs of food at a time. Dimensions : 20.2 × 34.52 × 47.03 in. Note that these dimensions are overall but I would think a rack will fit even if you have to cut it in half and use two cooking racks. Honestly, I've never timed how long a basket lasts, when I'm using it I just add wood to the basket as needed.

I had one of these for about a year and half before upgrading to a 20" Horizon Classic. Ribs have to be cut in half in order to fit. The thing leaks really bad. Really thin metal. If you are just getting started maybe buy this to find the love and get the basics down. I would spend the money and get a better smoker.

My main question is the opening between the tower, and the side box. Is there any sort of lever that allows you to control the amount of heat/smoke that flows through? if it does not have that, I plan to modify it to incorporate that. That way no matter how much wood I may add initially, I can control the Tower temperature much more accurately, and consistent.

Perhaps you could "insulate" the smoker box, and add door gaskets, for improved efficiency?!... Thanks!, for a nice review/demo!
