    The lava that got spilled under the cart at the very end might be due to it having dumped on top of a 7/7 lava tile on a lower z level. Since that lava couldn't go anywhere on the lower z level as it was all filled up, it might have slid around on top until it found a place to settle on. Real question is where the other 1/7 magma went, maybe the area by the stairs.

    @@kban6748 you can disable a few settings, which improve FPS with tradeoffs. Turning off temperature is one of them. No temperature does speed things up significantly (don't need to model temperature for the whole map anymore!), but makes magma and fire work differently. It still flows, but I believe it doesn't melt/burn things anymore. You can also disable weather - for most biomes, this is free FPS, but disabling weather in an evil biome with evil weather that turns people into zombies is kinda cheating.

    A video idea: how to equip and skill a fortress reclamation expedition (as I’ve never done that before) so like, what considerations do you need to make-do critters or enemies inhabit the location after it falls/is abandoned? If it fell to a beast will that still be there? So you need to spec into combat from the start? Is all the stuff from the previous fortress still there? do you construct a temporary surface fort to build up population before re-entering the previous fort proper?

    You can add a stop on a route anywhere, you don't need a trackstop constructed to use it as a stop in your route. You only need a physical track stop when you need the cart to dump or apply friction. Also, if you force a derailment (for example only build track up onto the the floor out of the pit, don't continue it down and around), the dwarfs will haul the minecart to the next stop. They will move very slowly, but it can be way easier than trying to build track to where you want the lava to end up.

    Indeed, that's the friction part like I said. Specifically in your video, the first stop doesn't need to be an actual track stop, you could just put the cart there before it's pushed off into the lava.

  • @Mirality

    @Mirality

    DF is a little confusing in that regard. When you're setting a cart route you do need to specify a "stop" where the route begins, but this can be any tile, it does not have to be a constructed "track stop". You only actually need the latter if you want to slow or dump a moving cart.

    After a lot of trial and error, I managed to get this to work using 2-z level deep lava trench + powered rollers to pull the minecart uphill. I needed to use a a waterwheel reactor down at -100 depth to power the rollers, but the system is automated and good enough to slowly fill my lava trenches 80-z levels up. The problem I was having with the method in the video was that my minecarts would get stuck in the lava trench most of time, no idea if it depends which dwarf kicks the minecart. I tried using some tricks to get the magma to 6/7, but then my minecarts would not always fill up.

    In regards to the minecart getting stuck in the lava trench. Have you tried having the initial stop (or start, if you will), be a few layers above the trench, so the cart gains a bit more momentum on the way down? Perhaps then it's less likely to get stuck in the lava. (Like what happened a few times in Tourshadows)

    Yes, you wouldn't usually dump it back out in a circle like this. This vid is teaching how to fill and how to empty (or not) the lava cart. You then decide where to dump it - like a magma furnace pit - in your own fortress. This is just a quick simplification.

    Thank you!! I finally got my magma transport system working after like 20 hours of trying. Mostly because every step involved a climb down to z level -118. But also because I had a lot of bugged terrain or something where dwarves thought that something was inaccessible even when it was clearly accessible… I ended up making a contraption with a water reactor powering rollers that took the cart through a pool of magma before being hauled to the top level. (And when it goes back down for more it always kills a cat or two on the way down.) Your way is a lot simpler. Can any creatures get through a murder hole carved into smooth rock? That’s how I got lava in without letting anything else in… so far.

    Of course you post this just in time after I already had to figure this out 3 days ago! I used drawbridge to control magma flow, and had the minecarts in the channel waiting. The magma then filled the carts, I drained it, and had to wait for the residual magma to evaporate. I didn't think a kick would make it through two tiles of magma. This is way faster!

  • @Wanderer1258

    @Wanderer1258

    Жыл бұрын

    The same thing with me. I watched another tutorial, and did as it told. Using drawbridges and waiting for lawa evaporate takes a long time indead. I also aked myself: why use drawbridges when there are floodgates, which do the same job and also work with levers? I also carved a long track in the floor, which goes also the way up to my base, and it worked decently, except that dwarves with minecarts used to bump into cats and other dwarves, spilling magma and making the whole process even longer. Then I decided to widen the pass to prevent bumping (1 tile for tarcks and the other for creatures to walk. And from that I got another bug: dwarves started hauling heavy minecarts in their hands instead of pushing them on the tracks. I don't know why it's happening. )

  • @atmosdwagon4656

    @@Wanderer1258 The reason you use drawbridges over floodgates is because a raised drawbridge with no open space directly above it is indestructible, while a floodgate can be destroyed by any monster that has the door/portal destruction ability. (there are variants of these native to lava and water alike) Because of this property, there's little reason to use floodgates for much of anything, save possibly safety for low-pressure, fully-secured waterworks within your fortress.

Then you can place minecarts stationary at the bottom of the lava pit. Next open the bridge to have lava flow over them, then close that bridge and open the other so the lava flows out into the room that's large enough it becomes 1x1 and evaporates. Then just reassign the carts to a whatever route I want the lava on and have dwarves carry them there instead of trying to build tracks to dump off points.

    All sorts of uses for magma. Magma forges/smelters/kilns/glass furnaces don't need fuel and filling minecarts like this lets you build those industries on safe layers instead of places where you'd potentially deal with things like fire imps or magma crabs Can also use the magma carts as a trap of sorts, hitting enemies with a speeding minecart full of magma is a great way to ruin their day Or just use them to fill up other places slowly, for more direct magma traps, moats or the like Someone else mentioned making obsidian, but i generally feel it's easier to bring water down to magma than magma up to water if making obsidian farms. If you're gonna obsidian cast stuff on the surface, it is also probably better to use quicker magma delivery methods, too
