Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - The Definition of Mid
Фильм және анимация
By modern (Marvel) standards, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is not a bad film. By sensible standards, it's an incredibly safe, unambitious, mostly forgettable tale that doesn't even try to make use of the immense amount of lore and world-building created by its forebears. You could tell a much better story on your tabletop.

@@LostChord you're missing out! The real fun begins when you've played enough times to develop an attachment to your character. Once you really get to know them and find their "voice" it stings a lot more when you take a hit. "a couple times" is not enough to know the triumph of defeating a BBEG that you've been tracking for months.
The fat dragon scene was good.
I think that you're being a bit harsh with this one. I really didn't want to see this movie, but my friends made me go. And, to my surprise, I ended up enjoying it. The film is goofy at points, but I think that actually helps in making it feel like an adaptation of a DnD game; it has interesting cinematography and editing (the cemetery scene), fantastic practical effects (especially with the Dragonborns; those very easily could've been CGI abominations but they aren't), the back stories are all worked in well, and it's acting and writing are decent overall. It's also nice that there aren't any no political gut punches to get THE MESSAGE across, and the movie is genuinely heartfelt and sincere when it needs to be. My favorite scene is when Christ Pine's character is talking to (spoiler) about trying to bring his wife back, and he's genuinely being vulnerable about how he was being selfish the entire time.
I think that mid-ness might not solely be due the writers inherent lack of talent and confidence in their audience's capacity to appreciate more complex narratives, but also an economics driven decision. Honor among Thieves had a reported production budget of $150 M. That means it needed a box office around $500 M just to break even. That's MCU money, which requires a MCU numbers of bums in theater seats, which in turn meant pitching to a predominately Normie MCU audience (or at least Hollywood's idea of what that is). When interviewed John Francis Daley, one half the writing team for the final script, was quite open about this perceived need for 'accessibility' to the uninitiated. The movie could have been much worse, but sadly i do not think better was ever in the cards.
Thicc is not strong. Fat is not muscle. You'd never cast a man with the build of angry tubby little Consuela there as "strong guy". There's only so much disbelief that I can suspend.
My disinterest in this film was due to how it looked and felt. I came across as people making fun of the fantasy genre rather than trying to create an engaging world. Take films like Willow, Legend, The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, Krull to name a few fantasy films from the 80’s and early 90’s. All these films show different kinds of medieval like Fantasy stories, but they all felt like they were created with a sense of purpose and were created by people who understand how a fantasy world works. This film feels as if it’s saying “hey look we have wizards, swords and dragons. That’s good enough and let’s throw in silly humor so it’s not too serious”. However each of the films I mentioned earlier all had humor as well. But were placed in areas that didn’t take away from overall story. Even in their marketing we knew what the story would be about. In Legend, it was saving the world from the devil and rescuing a unicorn, The Dark Crystal was a coming of age story told with puppets, Labyrinth was a young girl saving her brother from David Bowie. For this film, the marketing focused on its silly humor and cool looking monsters and nothing else. It also didn’t help that the writers focused on making the male characters jokes. But never on the actual story. Why are they doing this, how did they come together.
Must admit D&D is something I have paid no attention off however I get your point.....cheers.

I think the writers of this movie did exactly what Marvel and Lucasfilm (Disney) has stopped doing. They made a movie for the fans of the content. Anyone who plays D&D has experienced or will experience the woes and wins of the Honor Among Thieves crew. It depends on the lens you're watching through, I suppose.
I'm just back from seeing it with the kids, and whilst it's not The Godfather, it treated the Tabletop with respect and gave a hat tip to the 80s cartoon without relegating the reference to a member berry or shitting all over it. I'd go and see this again, and I'll even buy a DVD. It might be mid, but i'd still have enjoyed it in the pre-woke world
I think humorous fantasy can be great. Jack Vance's Dying Earth series, a cornerstone of the genre and one of the inspirations for D&D, is the prime example to me: The writing has a subtle, dark wit to it, and the humor tackles universal human follies rather than genre conventions. (The series was also written way before that was considered cool, but still.) The first book would make for excellent fantastical cinema; I'm thinking of something vaguely in the vein of "Tales of Tales" as far as the structure and presentation are concerned. But I guess that's more of a fantasy than anything in these books. Yeah ... the D&D movie. I'd rather try getting in the actual game, to be honest.
From all the trailers and clips I've seen of this movie, it just screams, "Meh".

Idk man I loved this movie lol. Maybe the awful quality of almost everything else Ive seen in the last year has made this one better by comparison. As someone who plays DND every week with my friends this was pretty much everything I wanted from a DND movie.
I *could* find a much greater adventure at my tabletop, and very occasionally do... but the truth is, not every game is so inspired. Many tabletop sessions are merely great fun, rather than perfection. The cheerful mediocrity of Honor Among Thieves was part of what I loved about it. It felt honest. I'm saddened there will likely not be a sequel.
We already got "Fun Fantasy" in DnD no less, it was a fan made movie. It was called "The Gamers: The Full movie, and it had a squeal called "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising", I think they made a third one but I didn't watch it.
It did acomplish to entertain me for it's duration, which i gotta say i find value in.. Sure it aint perfect, no way near to be realistic, but it had some good things to it. All in all i think it was a solid tho not dareing movie, with good humor, high spirit, and a decent core story, that of family. I would say i did not doubt weather money or family was more important to our main, it was very obvious that his drive was the quest to get his daughter back..
Thumbnail: Anyone care? Me: this happened?
Saw the movie yesterday with my dnd group If we went mb school grades, we gave it a C/ C+. It was inoffensive. That’s the best way to summarize it. As a stand alone movie you can call it a generic fantasy movie. As a DND movie, our enjoyment came from making meta jokes and guessing what level the characters were and what game rules (fifth edition) they „broke“. But that’s all we could talk about. It’s not the worst thing you can watch with your time but in the same theatre, they also showed the puss in boots movie so it was also not the best use of our time.
I still favor that cartoon where the gang are transported through a rollercoaster.
It was a 6 or 6.5 by itself, but a good tech demo for some fun films down the road.
I agree with some of this take, but not all of it. I think focusing only on Chris Pine would have detracted from the feeling of it being a D&D party. A lot of their choices seemed like they were to make it feel like a D&D campaign, which they were rather successful at achieving. I tend to play my D&D games a little darker and a little less quippy, but this felt very much like the games I played and ran back in high school.
I actually enjoyed this film..2nd favorite behind John wick this year..comedy was done way better than marvel movies..almost teared up at end..almost non stop action..8/10

Yes. All the male Characters in the film are good and the females are well written and relateable as characters. Chris Pine's character has a motivation any man would have in his position his arc is a genuine one of growth and interospection which he achieves himself and is never browbeaten into. Justice Smith's Character is a typical young man who when given the proper male man to man talk we've all had and as father given responds like you would want and grows. Michelle Rodrigez's Character isn't overbearing, acceptes Pine leadership, knows and trusts that he will come through and is loyal. Not sure what else you would want to kick dust in the eye's of the woke mob. More importantly they how the fucking Monsters right, no Int 3 beholders in this film.
I was pleasantly surprised by it- it was actually a good Forgotten Realms movie!
So, big time tabletop nerd here, even wrote a 9 page script for a video if I ever get into youtube about system changes for vtm. Overall I thought the movie was above average and pretty enjoyable. I did get annoyed that they took away the bard class' magic and jack of all trades aesthetic. Worst of all to me was that Ed never used a sword, cause we specifically saw him with one in his flashbacks. In the end, I think the movie had some stuff that could be seen as indicative of parroting certain values espoused so often in the media. But I guess the distinction here is they felt more subtle and didn't come at the expense of the story. Also I only went to see it as my work gave me a free movie ticket for my local theater. Goes to show how bad the advertising generally was. I don't want to give wotc my money anymore (quit mtg and 5e), but I figured this was a decent compromise. Sure the theater likely will pay them for the showing but my theater was mostly empty anyway.

Unfortunately mid is about as good as we often get of late.
There is a vomiting of a word salad buffet in this review, that starts to lean in one way, that only partially contradicts itself by the end. I never went into film looking for LoTR's in D&D, because that hasn't been my experience at table when i've played TTRPGs. Yes, you can tell a much better story on the tabletop, because there you are going to have alot more time to flesh things out. You don't get that in movies unless you get to make many of them. Like Lord of the Rings. However, If the previous films of this Name sake were D and C tiers with a B in there at best. For me this movie was A tier movie. It was simplistic, but it had heart. Had moving moments with alot of fun and laughs, that yes sometimes did get Meta if your well versed in the lore and mechanics of the game. The fun never went over the line into Parody, and the motivations for most of the characters was well displayed. The movie does not require you to know the game to understand it and enjoy it. I think that is its biggest win. I thoroughly enjoyed the Warcraft movie, as I am an avid lover of its lore, and World of Warcraft myself. However, I think its biggest failing was that it assumed that those that those would see it would understand more about its lore, than most did. So it did not explain things that might of needed an explanation, and it forced things without giving appropriate build up to it. I found Honor Among Thieves did the opposite of this. it explained what needed to be explained, while keeping a levity to the moment, and not just beating you over the head with exposition to get the points across. The biggest example of this is the "Speak with the Dead" spell scene. right off the bat, it gives the info you need, then it proceeds into the bit to get the info the characters needed, while playing up the exact "real life" situation that most Players that are not experienced with that spell in game would/could end up doing. I was laughing through that entire scene, only for it to pay off again later on.
Thanks. I look forward to being mildly entertained!
Regarding fantasy as Serious or Fun, there's been a discussion about (the problem) how fantasy and sci/fi literature over the past 10 years has become increasingly serious and pretentious, and that we should reward/ promote stories that are Fun. While "superhero" films have turned into Joss Whedon circlejerking, films have long trended toward serious and pretentious and this has only gotten worse in the past 10 years. So in that context, whether or not this D&D film is good, we really do need more Fun movies outside the "superhero" genre.
The only reason I want to go see it is because I want one of those D20 popcorn buckets to store my dice in
"if your answer to epic fantasy's severity 'problem' is to treat epic fantasy as a marvel film, you have perhaps misidentified the problem to begin with" I've been a fan of marvel and dc comics since I learned how to read. I still despise the MCU for making people think most superhero stories are action-comedy.
It kinda feels like these movies are going through an arc themselves like, from awful to mid to idk great and then masterpiece? 🤔
I HATED this movie. It was like releasing a Family Guy episode of D&D and then going ‘there’s D&D, happy?’
The film is released already?
I really liked it!
Awesome movie. FUN 😃
Th biggest flaw might be that everyone will play Druid in D&D after watching this movie and become disappointed that is much more limited than we are seeing in the movie. I do respect that that it is doing its own thing instead being a serious LOTR clone movie set in a D&D world. RPG:s are very much about having fun.
I thought the movie was great and completely agree with the writers on the comedic direction. Theres always plenty of laughs to be had at the table regardless of how "serious" the dm trys to make the story. I guess in comparison to 10 plus hour games like baldurs gate or neverwinter knights it might be lacking in story but not every movie needs to be a storytelling masterpiece inorder to be good.....

@@LostChord I disagree, I thought the story was pretty good honestly... And there 'was' a story, it just wasn't a GRAND story... And honestly, it didn't need to be one for a movie runtime experience.

@LostChord I never said the story wasn't good just that of course it isn't going to be as in depth as the dnd games with 10 plus hour stories that you tried to compare it to.... Personally I thought they did a good job balancing the story for both your casual viewer and dnd enjoyer. My dad who's been playing since the 80s loved it

@@sgtbeercanyt I also think Chord mischaracterizes of a few aspects. Like, this movie doesn't feel like a whole campaign, but the first part of one. The sorceress isn't the Big Bad Evil Guy, she's a minion of The Big Bad Evil Guy. The motivation behind Chris Pine's character stays pretty solid throughout, and the story never really veers away from it's goal or the goals of the characters. This isn't a "party of companions team up to save the world", it's "dysfunctional party of seemingly incompatible individuals come together for a goal, but then after achieving their goal realize "okay so maybe we should actually help a bit, because if we don't, who will?" which is... Kinda the launch point for many DnD games. The party doesn't start off with the massive goal of "taking on the BBEG and saving the world" but that's where they end up. And that feels like where the story is heading. Whether they leave the movie as a one shot or make sequels to it, it captures the feel of "That first few campaigns and conclusion of a character's backstory-driven quest that, now that they've overcome it, can now move forward without the baggage they used to carry wherever they might go next". We don't even have to see it, but that's what the story implies... And that's all it really needs to, I think. And i think that because of this, it actually avoids the pitfall of DnD movies and game adaptations in general of trying to cram too much into too short of a runtime.

@@cancerconnoisseur Solid take
I liked it enough to want to see more of it despite its glaring problems.Probably won't though.
I remember having mixed feelings upon seeing the trailer make the film feel like GOTG knockoff. And sadly those feelings got confirmed by the actual film as the wackiness and creativity seen in campaigns undermined any emotional sincerity
It was funny and I enjoyed it. Not a stellar movie but good if you need a laugh.
I think the fundamental mistake is basing a movie on 'dungeons & dragons', which is ultimately just a rules system. It would be far better to adapt d&d novels such as Dragonlance or drizzt. Also, given that non fantasy fans can treat the genre as childish, I think a more serious story would be better
@lukedesmith

think of it as another D&D story like the Drizzt and Dragonlance novels. It's not an adaptation, just a story set in that universe. It would be awesome to see the Drizzt novels adapted to the big screen though. I'd pay to see that.

No it wouldn’t. You would be pissed off if not exactly like in the books. This movie was almost flawless in its execution and opened the possibility of a huge franchise without the baggage of expectation.
Angry Joe gave it 10/10. Based on the trailer though, it doesn't really get me to watch it even when it comes to streaming.

OK, so yes. Finding a better game with my son and his friends. Right now, I am apparently a mechanic living on the edge of space station.

I need some background what is little platoons familiarity with Dnd
One of the best new movies I've seen in the last 5 or so years. It only being quite good says alot about the state of Hollywood...
Recovering the Buttplug of Hope from the Rectum Sanctum of Xanathar? Goddamn, I missed out on that campaign. Was that set in The Forgotten Realms? I bet Elminster was hiding it in his "prison purse." 🤔
Can we leave the Sword Coast yet? I mean there's a huge world and everything is always in one region it's getting like all Alien invasion movies attacking America when there's the rest of the world.
Yeah, it WAS ok, but any campaign I have been is would make a better movie
Why is Rincewinds Luggage in a D&D trailer?

Nah. I think you’d understand a few of the name references and visual clues, but if anything, the most notable aspect of the film is how it’s hollowed out - it had a huge wealth of material to draw on and gave us Generic Fantasy 101.

Not really. You may not catch the easter eggs or subtle nods, but none of that effects the plot at all. You could still watch it and understand what is happening.

@@lukedesmith I wouldn't say I have much desire to look further into the mythology and D&D universe but it certainly seems very interesting. Might just a problem on my behalf though and my painfully short attention span 😂. I was extremely into the Lord of the Rings universe 20 years ago and this seems just as enthralling. Maybe I'm just too old lol.
I'm not going to try and defend it, the movie felt like a pickup game of four noobs with an a hole dm running a forgotten realms campaign
Why don't they adapt a wildly popular D&D story instead of making their own crap? Dragonlance (if don faithfully) would make for an unbelievable set of films (or streaming series).
It’s better than mid bro… u got to judge it based on the bad propagandist “The Message” movies that has became the new norm now…
I don't understand why they can't make a good DnD movie. The cartoon was literally a game 0f DnD between friends animated and it was good. Just get any of the official prr'made game books and make them a movie, just one module yhat is already written just waiting for characters to go through it and dice to be rolled.
But it looks divers though!
I'm afraid I can't agree much with the conclusion It wasn't just tying to tell a character story around Pine. It was trying to tell a Dungeons and Dragons story. One told by a somewhat inexperienced DM (hence the DMPC encounter, structure, and way it handled pacing) and one player that tends to dominate the conversation. They all had arcs and moments because they're all player characters, and the big bad being a generic big bad was because no character was supposed to be the main one even if one took that role It did exactly what it wanted to do: tell a story in the Forgotten Realms following a group of heroes trying to complete an overarching quest and dealing with their personal quests in the process

I really enjoyed the movie it was a lot of fun reminded me of some of the 80s fantasy movies i watched like krull legend and dragonslayer
Honestly, the only comparison movie it should possibly be compared to is the World of Warcraft movie that came out a few years ago. Both are movies based on games set in a fantasy world with hundreds of hours of lore trying to make a 2 and some hour movie out of it. Though somehow that still feels wrong to the people who made the World of Warcraft movie.

But Warcraft has existing plots; DnD is mostly just tools to setup your own stories.
Having played the Neverwinter MMO I couldn't help wondering why they didn't base this off of that so Sofina is Valendra with the cast taking roles of characters used for the tutorial? Until I've watched this properly I can only assume Midnights Edge is right and the writers simply sex changed a couple of characters to fit that rubbish about emasculating their lead. Well until I watch this best wishes to everyone.
I'll take mid over a woke trophy piece.
