That DM was a massive asshole on all counts but the backstory thing really ticks me off too. When a DM changes your backstory in front of you the only proper response is "No!" and every time they brings it up refuse to accept or interact with it.

First story: Regarding the totem, my mind immediately went to an ambush predator from older D&D editions called a _wolf in sheep's clothing._ When it's dormant, it looks like a tree stump with a rabbit sitting on top of it. Yes, the rabbit is part of it. Someone telling you that you should be grateful they consider you worth the effort to gaslight and abuse is someone you're better off cutting out of your life. As for the cane, canes made from bull phalluses are a thing, so why not a horse's? Second story: ..."too bad, you get put to sleep anyway." That's like telling me my ratfolk character vomits even though rats physically can't vomit, their biology simply doesn't work that way. That GM sounds like a racist asshole.

For example when OP charmed a planned encounter getting attacked because they're "into them(???)", Throwing shit like the thing with the horse in a silent tantrum or the obviously planned tpk at the end which they miraculously survived and the session and campaign as a whole mysteriously ended xD

Also changing a player's backstory without talking to them? that is a no no. In the campaigns I play in, we normally use fumble tables but that was brought in on the request of a player and everybody agreed it'd make things more interesting, which it has. The only real way to take advantage of long range abilities like spell sniper is to employ stealth, climbing, flight, and scrying magic. If the whole party is very cautious and takes the time to carefully scout their environment and find enemies long before the enemies find them, having superior range can really shine. I'm not excusing the referee's other behavior. He was a petty, obstinate, unfair asshole.

@@cinnabard955 My initial thought was that there was going to be a surprise trip to Barovia - 'magical mists' and all that. It's one of the few things I can think of that would circumvent the elven trait - and that's literally intended to just be a plot hook for the whole module, not a campaign-spanning nerf. Ideally the character falls asleep normally and gets whooshed to Barovia, or they get lost in the mists. That being said it's either divulged in player recruitment or session 0 that CoS is happening, unleashing that module on an unsuspecting party (even if you know the players personally) without warning is highly advised against. I'm going to be playing with my siblings and one of their partners. All 4 of them are well aware of my affinity for horror/spookies, and that they draw the limits of just how fucked up I can make the story without crossing lines. Ignoring a player's boundaries, removing their agency, changing backstories without approval, and straight-up ignoring character features? That's a whole pack of red flags, and you'll need to make a run to the dollar store for the rest you'll likely end up needing. I'm glad your DM was open to your feedback and started to address the issue. I would approach their table with a healthy amount of skepticism, and don't be afraid to challenge a call you think is unfair. Maybe they genuinely had no idea that they were being unfair to an incredible degree, and can see that they were detracting from the fun that the rest of the table was having. The tales of actively horrible DMs are thankfully a lot less common than ones that end well, and I hope your DM is able to provide a game that's satisfying for everyone in the future.

Ok. So, here's a "that guy/girl" moment I'll tell on myself. At the start of the current campaign I'm playing in, I was excited as Hell to play the dullahan hexblade warlock I had conceptualized with my DM's approval months in advance. So, I feel like maybe a little too much enthusiasm got the better of me. Anyway, we went to a wizard's tower at level one, which my dullahan (Killian) had scouted out alone beforehand. Probably shouldn't have split the party, but, nothinf happened to Killian. Plus, I had done so on another party member's suggestion since Killian had been banned from entering a priestess's house after a failed persuasion check (dullahan and all). Inside the tower, we searched and found strange things. Even another player got sucked into a weird teleportation telescope (you could aim it, look through it, throw some switches, and it would send you where you were looking) where he got killed on an alien planet. That wasn't Killian's doing at least. But, after more searching, we found the wizard trapped in a forcefield, and, he had been there for a few decades. He was quite mad by that point. He bargained with us...threatened us...and while the party was trying to figure out whether or not we were going to let him out, I got impatient. I asked twice if they were ok with me shooting him with my crossbow. Without waiting for them to answer, I described how Killian raised his crossbow and shot the wizard, even after the DM asked if I was sure that's what I wanted to do. Well, Killian's crossbow sent the wizard flying out of the forcefield, in which he proceeded to fireball the party. Nearly all of us went down. One magic user happened to be out of harm's way. The rest of us were rolling death saves. I rolled three 8s in a row for Killian. So, he pretty much died. Luckily, our one player managed to save the others. I apologized profusely. And, at this point, I have to say, I don't deserve my friends in my D&D group or my DM. None of them were mad, even though they had every right to be. Or, if they were, they were very gracious towards me about it. And, I think the loss of the character I had been way too attached to was the appropriate consequence. Granted, my DM rolled for Killian's head secretly, since it could be detached at will and survive independent of the body. So, Killian is now an NPC. I rolled up another dullahan, his younger sister, Aoife, and have been playing her ever since. Note: this is not my usual MO as a player, and, I have definitely learned my lesson after this traipse into "that girl" territory. TLDR I get too excited for the current campaign and make a rash, selfish decision that nearly gets the entire party killed.

I think spell sniper is a cool feat on paper, but poor in execution. With my first warlock, I had initially thought about taking the eldritch spear invocation along with spell sniper to boost the range of eldritch blast to 600ft. Then I thought about how we were mostly stuck indoors, underground, or in close quarters. Would have been a complete waste.

So what I'm hearing is... DM: This is a game with rp elements and I intend to use everything in your backstory so I make an elaborate story including you in it! Player: Awesome, I can devote time to this. **This horror story later** Player: When you first pitched this, it sounded like a serious game. And the first incident that stuck was the horse d*&$ injury and you telling me my character made a wooden dong to avenge him? DM: Of course, you're a sympathetic person! Player: And the fact that I tried to hide the cool reveal of my character having prosthetics and not giving me the chance to rp that moment out of my hands? DM: Of course! you were unconscious because you became a drunk after watching your best friend die in front of you. Player: Despite the good rolls the party made to save him, and that I told you before the session that I didn't want a close friend? DM: Well yeah, it makes no sense you wouldn't get to know anyone during your soldiering days Player: Yeah, because I was in an evil army out of necessity so naturally I would want to keep my distance. DM: I know, which is great when the next session reveals that instead of being a war criminal because you didn't want to follow orders, you're a war criminal because you killed defenseless civilians! Player: ...Why did you make waste my time writing a backstory? As for the last story, I don't encourage violence, but nothing is going to stop me from suggesting you design a bad guy who may or may not have the same personality of this guy, and run a game and enjoy watching players beat the stuffing out of him.

I had a DM like this too: All the attacks where aimed at the cleric, because as a healer, he would be the biggest thread. So everyone shot crossbows at the cleric, who, as far as they knew, was just a bystander, and completely ignored the deranged fairy throwing axes at them. Also, the cleric was not allowed to use his shield, because he did not specify he had it equipped. And yes, a Natural 1 does mean hitting an ally, which was not established until the first Natural 1 was rolled. The story was much less antagonistic than the combat through.

I do't get DMs who say "build whatever character you want" and then have a problem with the character you create. Particularly to the point of targeting them in game. I would get it if the player violated the character creation rules or ignored the spirit of the campaign, but the time to deal with that is during character creation. If something about a character ends up being over powered then the DM needs to have a conversation with the player and lay out how it's a problem (e.g. it's overshadowing the other players and they're not having fun because of it) and then *work with* the player on how to lower its power level.

As a GM and as a player I think having a rough idea of the backstory is better than an overly detailed one. Leaving som wiggle room for you and the GM to add or change things. That said, making such huge changes so that the character now is a detestable war criminal is a huge overstep. If I was the player I would keep insisting ingame that I was being framed. In game solutions to out of game problems are rarely a good idea, but it would be a way to give the GM the finger without pushing the game to a dead stop. If the GM protests that your character is defending himself from the accusations then it's time to find another group.

The GM's terrible behavior aside, I did get a feeling OP was a bit too rigid with his backstory as well. I personally enjoy a detailed story as long as there are multiple hooks and things to play with. I get a feeling that OP was a bit too deterministic with his story though and already had some future things too planned out, which is not something I recommend doing. The GM adding a friend/acquaintance NPC from his past seems like fairly mundane stuff for instance, it feels a bit weird that he'd be that angry about it. With that said the GM's intentions were obviously just terrible, and he didn't respect the player's backstory at all. But at the same time it's pretty clear that OP made a mistake in creating a very serious character for a game that clearly had a much more light-hearted tone with gags and such. Maybe that wasn't obvious from the start, which is why session 0 is important so that everyone is on the same page.

Bro that first story is borderline torture pr0n. What kinda asshole goes out of their way to actively pick on one specific character and use them as a punching bag? I’m so glad the campaign ended before DM could reveal that “plot line” they had set up for OPs character.

Yeah group seems young, so dongle jokes oplenty. But, spell sniper is a stupid feat. It's literally the feet that says to everybody else in the game that it's all about me right now and there's nothing you can do about it. In addition, if there is literally nothing in the way within 240 ft I will be surprised that you're not in an open field, or on a road. But while the DM doesn't seem fantabulous... The player seems to bias.

Every group has different preferences. Yeah, a lot of stuff there was dumb and cringe, but (the GM's crap behavior aside) if that's how the group likes it, it's perfectly valid. OP's character was clearly too serious and a bit dark for the tone of the game. I don't know whether he knew this is how the game would be like, but if he did, he was pretty much setting himself for disappointment.

Obviously the GM is awful in the 2nd story, but the OP is also making a mistake, Elves can't be put to sleep by "MAGIC", the tavern was noted to have a fog, which means it might have been a non-magical source, like sleeping gas, elves can be put to sleep via poisons and gases. but yes, the GM is awful, sounds like they are targetting players and removing player agency, this is BAD D&D.

I do not think the first dm was being adversarial. They just targeted the player with the highest AC because they stood the best chance of not being killed. That seems like it was an attempt to balance the encounters in the player's favor, if anything. Spell Sniper is a hard to use feat, issue is the rest of the party. If they also do not have extreme range attack abilities, they are watching this one player fight alone for 3 rounds or he is just 1,000 feet behind them an unable to do anything but shoot. You also have it be useless in a city or dungeon where walls block your view, you know, where most of the adventures are likely to happen in a D&D game.

It's really important to remember that the DM has only as much power and authority as the players allow them. If a DM is being a blatant dickhead ask the other players at the table if what the DM is doing seems fair. If they all agree with the DM you may need to find a new group. If not then the DM better wise up or it will be really hard to run a game with no players...
