DnD's Edgiest Edgy Edgelord Character | r/rpghorrorstories

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of DnD Horror Stories, we have a story about a potential player with one of the cringiest edgy edgelord characters I've read about, and when told that some changes may need to be made to fit into a dungeons and dragons campaign, flips out on a player that was trying to help him.

A character whose powers have been drained could be interesting. It can start as a prideful "I can do it without help" edgelord and slowly learn to develop a sense of camaraderie and loyalty to the other party members.

My last wizard had a story similar to Gandalf. He was a minor divine being (very powerful but not a god) who was sent to the material plane in the body of an old man with most of his memories gone so rather than learning new spells and stuff on level ups he’s just regaining memories and relearning spells he already knew.

My basic rule of thumb is that (for class and level games) a PC's backstory should be no longer than 1 page, plus 1 page per additional starting level when the game begins. So a level 1 PC's backstory should be no more than 2 pages long. You're less likely to have an overdeveloped starting character that way.

Red eyes are stereotypical "danger" eyes throughout many forms of media, typically used to imply power and/or evil. Especially in anime. Silver hair is also typically used in much media to represent mystical, mysterious, and powerful characters. It's easy to see why edgelords would like those colours, even without a specific character for inspiration.

A handful of edgelords probably don't even know what an Albino is xD They just go "Oooooooo color combination that feels XYZ way!" But even if they knew, it wouldn't change much. There are disadvantages that the albinism could/would give to a character, like sensitivity to sun, perhaps even partial blindness, standing out from your typical crowd (less odd in a fantasy setting, there's so many different races already that a pale fella ain't that wild), etc. Their character can't have flaws, because that'd make them actually interesting

OP hit the nail on the head. This guy wanted to be the main character, and main characters are for books, movies, TV shows, and video games, not tabletop RPGs. He should consider one of those alternatives if it’s such a burning necessity for his character to be the prima donna. Also, the edge is excessive. Edginess is like a condiment: it improves the flavor if used in moderation, but nobody wants to eat an entire plate of it. And finally, OP, if you ever read this, know that you weren’t the asshole. You weren’t spoiling his enthusiasm for the game, you were giving him a much-needed reality check. The game he wanted to play was most definitely not the game you or most DMs would run, and for him to go forward not knowing that would just be setting him up for disappointment, and setting his group up to deal with a really obnoxious problem player.

How I might rewrite Damien to actually work: Damien is the son of a local noble who was deposed by another power hungry lord. Before being executed, he sent his young son away to a knight friend to take care of him. This knight however, does not seem to be the valiant person he presents himself in the public and forces Damien into serving as his squire. Eventually, the knight would force the young child into serving him in wars and battles, leaving Damien to grow up with a load of wartime trauma. Eventually, the knight dies and the side he fought for was decimated by the army of the lord that wronged his family. Stranded in a battlefield, Damien was left with nowhere to go. In his lowest of low, a devil speaks to him, promising him answers and revenge in exchange for servitude as a warlock. Damien accepts, unwittingly playing into the hands of the ploys of the devil. His first mission? Theres a bunch of mercenaries and adventures that are working for people that also serves the interests of the devil well. Aid them and see to their success. Also the fame and renown you'll get will play very nicely in the plans of the devil...

I told all my players when I first took the DM chair, all first time or very low time players: "When designing your character's backstory, remember that you are starting at Level 1. Don't create so much back story that you leave no room for a story to develop in the game. Keep it simple, and give them a reason to want to go adventuring."

Honestly, I'd find a character more "Badass" if they did had horrible stuff happen to them, but can still laugh it off and walk their path without depending on it. Sure, whenever that story would be involved, would be normal, even expected, that they feel down a bit, but that's what should motivate them to finally solve the issue and carry on.

I made an edgelord character for my most recent DnD campaign, but I did it with the intention of him being... a parody, I guess? He's a member of a gang, so he's got this big chip on his shoulder, has rivalries with other gangs, and goes out of his way to try and beat them up, but he's also pretty dumb and desperately wants companionship because he's not used to being without his gang. So, as a fanfic author myself, I was about to comment that the entire point of fanfiction is to shift things around to get an outcome you want, which sometimes means making slight modifications to the canon setting to achieve. However, unless you give a bloody good reason, outright changing character dynamics is usually a bad idea. Crossovers work well for that. Nothing works wonders for improving relations by adding something that gives the 'useless' child an edge. So, I'm playing in a campagne set in the new Ryoko's universe and my character has experience with dealing with Kaiju. As a tracker. You can give your character impressive feats in their backstory, assuming your campagne starts high enough for it to work, but even a basic villager can still do some impressive stuff. Sure, hunting a bear isnt as impressive as soloing a Hydra, but I bet most of us couldnt do that. However, its also an entirely reasonable feat to pull off for a level 1 character. Also, I have a character in mind to play whos a princess from another kingdom who decided to run away from home and slum it as a rogue because she was bored. The fact that shes royalty would provide good potential story beats for the plot of the campagne and some potential connections and knowledge, but it would have no actual impact on the party until it came up.

With a few changes you make a character with a powerful background pretty well. One I like is Fighter/barbarian/ some other physically powerful character who is now old and feeble but still wants to defend the ones they love so they started taking up magic. Maybe they were a lvl 9 badass but now they are frail and like a lvl 1 wizard. Hopping back into adventures in a few role with the new generation of heroes. Give yourself high int with nature history and arcana and see if your DM allows you to roll to give pointers to monster's weaknesses and the like to simulate old experiences

I'll be honest, I would have simply told him "Okay, let's try to build Daemion. Let's say we use Point Buy for the characteristics, and move on from that." I usually do that with players that give me overblown characters in different games - for example, heroes in Champions that would be worth over 1200 XP rather than the 250 a starting hero is built on, or wannabe "heroic pilots" in mech games that expect to be handed monsters like the Moray or the Phoenix Hawk because "I'm an awesome pilot in my backstory" and can't put together their character so that he is an ace pilot, an ace gunner, a master diplomancer... you know, stuff that usually requires so many points that they'd actually BE the Phoenix Hawk, rather than pilot it. They usually complain that the system is flawed, and that they'll find a system that allows them to create their masterpiece. They usually don't.

Hm I have played a rather edgy backstory character before. It was one of my favorites but it was tempered with the fact that I played them as a bit of a pushover, something of the party mentor (one was actually his former student who was grown up by the time the campaign started), and was quite the caretaker in general which meant he was often trying to cheer up and sooth the others in the party after something terrible happening. I played into his deeply protective nature and the edgy part really only came up when hints of his past came up and then he became skittish or angry (in a cold way, not fiery). But yeah, mostly I played them as very kind to the group and sort of a pushover for those he cares about (and children, it was known he could be playfully bullied by kids, which is how that party member became his student). The story was basically he was from a noble family who got caught up in a royal faction power struggle and his entire family, to his knowledge, was dead. He escaped and became a refugee in a new place and town. As he was an elf he had a long life. This comes into play because he, while somewhat of a recluse, was sort of a local town hero as he would guide lost people in the woods, help guard the roads from bandits, and hunt down rare plants that might be harder for others to find and get to. He was known to be able to make healing potions, a skill he was taught by the kid who originally rescued him, a potion maker’s apprentice, who, after my character being there for 50 years, was a potion master in his own right by the campaign start. However, and this is the part the dm told us to build around, the town my character had come to call home was attacked and overrun by a fiendish army and all my character and the party could do was help as many citizens as they could escape through a magic portal. As we went through it, we discovered that all of us had been separated, not the party, but us and the citizens we saved. And that is how the story begins. I have my character focus on cheering up the party by entering silly contests at the local market nearby, start gathering what supplies we need, and we help the locals who help us in turn. It was a cool game but unfortunately too many of us had schedule changes due to work responsibilities and so the game went onto permanent hiatus. I did take some of my concepts I made from this character and put them into a new one that I’m still playing, though the underlying anger that this one has is far more cooled off and more melancholy. The arc I intend to play out is a lesson in learning to live with grief of loosing a loved one. Sure, time doesn’t heal it all, and yes it will always hurt, but one can learn to live side by side with it and be able to sincerely say, “I don’t regret loving that person and the pain of grief is worth it anyway.” So yeah, I still got to play out mentor role too, something I didn’t intend to do but happened anyway as I made the new character a linguistics scholar who is very skilled in arcana despite not having magic (knows a lot about magic basically but can’t cast, can make spell scrolls though with the aid of a caster, and very quickly too). Anyway, so that’s how my edgiest character panned out. They were actually beloved by the party and I do miss playing with that table. Oh well. My current favorite character is definitely the new one I made with bits and pieces of the edgy one. They are a very insightful, caring, intelligent, and charismatic person (in a sincere, calm, and steady way) but haunted by their past which is more a result of their worst flaw, taking responsibility for more than they should are is fair to themself. And it is a flaw, especially for a caretaker type like this, because it leads to a very fast burnout. Learning to be selfish, learning to understand what you can and can’t do and where and who should have responsibility for things, or even if anyone should, is important. This is the lesson my character is learning. Basically, they are learning to take a breath and feel free in a healthy way. But all in all, the OP is right. The edgiest of backstory tropes can be played out with the right player and with a skilled hand at balancing out those sharp corners and when they come out and how, while still being a good player at the table who lets everyone share the spotlight, even utilizes their backstory to enhance and highlight another player’s (something I did recently myself and I’m still proud of because that party member felt pretty accomplished like they deserve, really highlighted the character arc they had been building towards). Anyway, enough about me. Thanks for reading for those who chose to.

Level one is scary, but it helps give players perspective by forcing them to earn their power. Bear in mind that even villains like Ganondorf and Sephiroth had to start off weak. These people are not arrogant because they we're always strong, their arrogant because they fought until they got strong enough to face any challenge laid before them. Hell Sephiroth nearly got washed away in the life stream because of he saw himself as untouchable, and failed to finish off a potential threat when he had the chance. So try to balance arrogance with practicality, and let your character develop bonds with the rest of the party. Edit: Also I stand by what I said in a previous post. A level one character should see a goblin riding a Warg into battle as a genuine threat to survival, not a downgrade to a story that has already peaked.

Honestly though, the summary for Damien's storyline isn't that bad. I feel like it could easily make up a multi-book swords and sorcery series if the details were filled in. You could make the first book about Damien growing up on the streets of the Kingdom's slums and ending with him killing the old man, then getting kidnapped and forcefully recruited into the shadow military because the old man was an old veteran and needs to be replaced. Then the second book is about the grueling trials and tribulations of the super soldier training. Maybe have Damien try to escape and get severely punished for it. These ideas could easily be fleshed out into an interesting story if the person coming up with them would just start from the beginning instead of grasping for the power fantasy that comes towards the end.

Ha! Yea, it's probably Sephiroth, but keep in mind how many character designs over the years took cues from Elric. Hint: it's a LOT. Oh, and even the edgelords who do ape Elric of Melnibone always forget one thing; Elric was a fuck up in the end and lost everything.

I've been trying to think of a good backstory for this guy, and here's my idea: You're out in the wilderness or somewhere relatively isolated, and you get badly injured. You encounter a Fey or low-level trickster god, and they offer you a deal. They give you the ability to work through the pain of your injury, but you are bound to their will. They will call upon you, and you will heed it without hesitation. Maybe if you can do enough good with this second chance, it will offset whatever actions you will commit in your patron's name.

To the edgelord's player: If everyone you show your character to is saying it's a Marry Sue character, then it probably is a Mary Sue character. If you're sure it's not, then critically examine the character and determine what is giving everyone the wrong impression, and fix it.

Okay so the whole mary-sue character thing with an overly compicated backstory despite starting at level one is part of the course at this point, though admittedly it's really funny, but the party that *truly* baffles me here is the guy being infuriated at the idea of.... *gasps* sharing the spotlight with the other players and having to be in a story unrelated to him! OH THE HORROR! D&D is a cooperative game. Sharing spotlight with other players and letting the DM create a story is part of the fun; If you want a story where you control everything, either write a friggin' book or play a RPG solo game.

That backstory reminds me of a character a classmate made whick lacked any kind of backstory, she had Sherlock holmes deduction skills and never explained how or why and every new detail was made on the heat of the moment judging by how out of nowhere her skills, places she was known or npcs she had any relationship with The best part was the final battle with the bbeg, she made the classic "ey, what's that over there?" And when the other looks the other way she ran away and went back home (wherever that was since... You know... No backstory)

The whole formally powerful warrior story could work if you have a wish granted transferring their mind into the body of a noble that has never done a day of hard labor in his life or a peasant that has if you want to be nice. Plus it removed all his battle knowledge and skills so they know they used to know these things but have to learn it all over again. Also, make it so no believes they are who they say they are.

For players of mine who are bad for this (or new and don't know what to write for a backstory) I give them my three-question backstory generator and get them to answer ONLY the three questions: 1. Where did your character come from? 2. What does your character want long-term? 3. Why did your character choose to join the team? If the answers are longer than 50 words, and most importantly, if the answer to the last one is something snarky like "they are a means to an end" or "I wouldn't", then sorry, scrap your answer sheet and try again. Level 1 characters are pure neophytes, their stories are as of yet unwritten. That's what the game is for. Don't want to do that? Write a book.

I've made edgy characters before and the number 1 way to make them work is to give them an incentive to be working with the party and when I say give an incentive I don't mean that the DM should give one but rather the player should figure one out. For example "I need the party because how else am I gonna carry all that gold I'm gonna steal?", followed by the rogue sneaking gold pouches into other players inventory for "Safekeeping".

Color theory, being albino is just what people with white hair in our world would be, but in fiction it has meanings that has the intentions of denoting something about a character’s personality such as white hair meaning having a cool mind while red eyes can denote a lesser hotheadedness.

Granted I’ve never played dnd but i think Daemion’s backstory could be fixed if the reason his uncle recognized him was because of a birthmark that was seen as he was being patched up from defeating the hydra. The resurrection could also be saved by having it so that his patron was lying about being so powerful and was actually just a mid-low tier demon who underestimated just how much power it took to resurrect the pc. Leaving the player character at level one with the others due to the demon being just barely able to resurrect him let alone bring him back at full strength.

What's craziest after hearing this insane backstory I thought of a way I could personally make it work but it probably wouldn't make the player happy because Belle would possess the players previous body and you would be reincarnated into the bastard son of his uncle and then like aged up to whatever level we need him to be for the party he would have to retrain and relearn all his skills but have a slight advantage to learn them because he remembers this previous life

Well I can certainly understand why nobody would want to play with such an edgy character that wants to be the one everything revolves around, as a writer myself I would recommend nobody ever try and dissuade somebody from writing nor to simply write it off as edgy and uninteresting Because that is extraordinarily unfair to people that are first time writers or amateur writers. Everybody has to start from somewhere and they need time to write and grow as a novelist so providing with critical feedback is much more important than to simply tell them that their writing style is terrible. There's a lot of anime, movies, cartoons, novels etc that have extraordinarily overpowered characters, So it makes sense that many people will try to emulate and imitate what they see in some of their favorite series, But it does help to keep their expectations a bit more grounded.
