Dungeon Master RUINS Campaign With DMPC | R/RPGHORRORSTORIES

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of RPG Horror Stories with DnD Doge, we have a few tales that are from heavily anime inspired TTRPGs. First, a story about a player that wants to call the Roleplay cops on another player in a BESM game. Then, sticking with BESM, a tale about a Game Master that ruins a player's character via time travel. A story about a great campaign ruined by a new dungeon master. And for the friday glory story, a tale about a cult that worships a Moose.

Yeah, I wish OP had his character call that out during the play by play. Since as DM said to previous statement I would imagine that would be a thing their character would do, especially since the Teacher already is getting them in trouble so what's the problem bringing the cruel teacher down as well for something MUCH worse.

God I hate when people do that. Had a DM who started the level 1 campaign with his old PC from the previous game which we played until level 3, buffed up to level 20 and loaded with legendary gear, "ripping apart thousands and thousands of soldiers and stacking their bodies into giant piles of corpses", even at level 20 that's a bit much. Then when we got past that, guardsman (who were on our side but were now chasing us trying to kill us for some reason?) were suddenly struck down by "enough arrows to literally block out the sun", and it turned out to be one guy sitting in a tree with a longbow, a level 20 ranger who was also an old PC... We didn't play that game long.

I actually want to create a DMPC called "Onyx McSharpton." He is, of course, dressed all in various shades of black, mostly matte, but with the odd bit of patent leather thrown in. He has black hair, and dark skin, dark eyes, and never smiles. He introduces himself with the edgiest of edges, claiming all kinds of murder and death, and HE CANNOT HIT A BARN WITH A REPEATING CROSSBOW, which the party immediately finds out, as they are all ambushed within 30 seconds of his meeting them. As soon as the combat is over, and he has failed miserably (or even before it's over), he disappears without a trace (the one skill he's REALLY good at). Each time they meet, he brags some more about how great he is, and his masterful death-dealing, and then they are all ambushed again. Noteworthy: HE is targeted just as much as the party, so it's not like he's in cahoots with whoever is ambushing them. After four or five of these encounters, they'll meet him, and he'll be too dejected to brag about ANY edgy stuff. He'll just cry about how he's a big liar, and he's never killed anyone, and he can't hit anything, and his only skills are hiding and escaping, and he hates his life. They will wait for it, but will NOT be ambushed, at all. I figure the party will probably adopt him, knowing my players. Their edgy mascot. But, you never know. I look forward to finding out, though. In truth, the only time I do DMPCs is when the module says to have a companion (such as in Curse of Strahd), and they are always at least one level below the party, and sometimes don't even have combat stats, at all. They are more like McGuffins the party has to carry around, and they sometimes say things. But one time, I want to give them a DMPC that isn't a by-the-book ally, and just someone they can bring with them if they want, like DM Lair's Gary the Intern.

Something tells me the OP of that DMPC story DM may have been repressing bad memories of that "friend" (Like he started his own group BECAUSE of that idiot and his abuse of DMNPC, but sadly was away from him long enough that he forgot "why he started his own group to begin with") and sadly subjected his players to that idiot who was more then happy to make a new group of people who don't know him be a "captive audience" to his "book reading!" But I can't really feel too much sympathy for the group and OP for allowing this shit to go on before they replaced him (I'm sure the ass was rolling dice and saying "he rolled high so they can't replace him" only to as I Imagine, be "rolled out the door" preferably with a boot to the ass on the way out) seriously this was a problem DM who I'd not be surprised likely lost a group before Good DM offered his group ignorant to why the idiot lost his last group (I REALLY doubt he could have kept a group for very long with this behavior! So I'm guessing he DID lose his previous group to what OP and his group did to him once they had enough! Though the first time should have been "GTFO" around when he outright CHEATED to get his way and was using his DMNPC to be a literal Problem Player! Seriously the worse Problem Players are the ones protected by the DM....or in this case ARE THE DM! People really need to stop challenging the DM in game and just deal with them out of game! Only the real idiot DM "play fair" when they know they can BULLSHIT to win! Like the one who tried to play "you defeated an illusion" to save his precious DMNPC! I was like "players.....just replace the idiot! Why did you waste time and motivation fighting him fair and square in a game he can CHEAT IF HE WANTED TO WIN! This DM just showed that YES, Yes he will shamelessly cheat and love every moment of the idiot players not just booting him out....which just made it funny when they booted him out unless he left on his own while the getting was good, which I doubt!)

I've got a recent horror story. It's not nearly as bad as some of these stories often shared here but I was left pretty upset so I did want to get it off my chest. It's not enough to make me want to leave the game, but it certainly did crush my creativity and make me less excited for next session. My character (naive elven Druid) watched a young boy get his hand chopped off for stealing food. Naturally, my character wanted to help, giving him food and fresh grown crops so he won't starve. I spend 2 weeks IRL planning with my cousin (Fighter) on how to sneak into the holding cell to get the kid some food (Fighter wanted to vandalize the guard station for unrelated reasons so we figured we'd sneak out together.) We set out, I Wild Shape into a tiny animal to get in, I pass many checks to get down and investigate some drunk guards. Empty cells. I search the holding cell for paperwork on the boy. Nothing. Confused and not sure where to go, I find Fighter outside and we start making more plans. I start asking if I can Wild Shape into something else to track the smell, etc, and so on. All no. Finally, the DM sighs and goes, "You guys kinda made something out of nothing. This was never supposed to be a big thing. It's kinda just been a waste of time." Me, naturally frustrated and feeling like an idiot, just replies, "So I don't get any closure? I can't find the boy at all?" Dm just shrugs and repeats that I made a whole deal out of nothing. Angry about this (because DM KNEW I was planning this mini side quest for weeks now) I just concede and check out of the game. I give one work answers and am not feeling creative at all. I hardly even want to play because I feel like I've wasted everyone's time and my own. The next morning (in game) the DM has guards wake us up, looking for whoever vandalized the guard station, and Fighter quickly insists we leave town before they can find us. Only in the middle of town, as I'm sitting there at the table completely uninterested, does the DM make a note to me saying "you see the boy from before with only one hand..." So, in essence, he gives me the little 5 minute scene that I wanted. Only after he made me feel stupid for suggesting it. He allowed me to waste 20 minutes or so looking for clues, telling me it wouldn't happen, and crushed my creativity, just to give me the little scene anyway, with a kind of, "see? All you had to do was wait." sort of jab. It annoyed me a lot. It makes me not want to encourage role-play next time. What could have been a really nice scene of my Neutral Good Druid being a lovely friend to all, turned into a very sour point all because DM didn't want to RP a quick scene. Anyway, that's the bulk of it. Just wanted to commiserate a little bit. Next session is soon and I'm not sure how excited I am about it right now...

Doge should probably check out Yuyu Hakusho and Tenchi Muyo; he might enjoy them; regarding Tenchi Muyo, there are a few different variations of the series; I was introduced to it via the original Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki continuity, and I suggest Doge start there too, and the follow-up series to it, Tenchi Muyo GXP, is one of the few following series to share continuity with the series, even the primary casts of both series are mostly separate from one another, but season 5 of Ryo-Ohki does mention them then bring those characters back into the main series continuity.

I just gotta say the bugbear dmpc one gave me a pretty much ptsd moment cause it sounded like a campaign i ran one time years ago. cast: Dm: me Grog: amazing partymate from bugbear's campaign previous, fire genasi zealot barbarian Bugbear: last dm and was both a toxic metagamer and cheat, bugbear bard Elsie: a sweet and understanding new player, halfling beastmaster ranger For backstory bugbear ran a campaign that by session 2 the entire perty dropped like a hot stone, it was rough to say the least with one of the situations being the party being left completely defenseless at level one to a lich, party being a warlock, paladin, cleric, and a rouge, we had all of our equipment taken in a freak storm that even with good rolls by our rouge couldnt salvage anything sides paladin's sword, we *all* that had magic of any kind somehow got cut off from it, paladin couldnt even smite, mind you we were lvl one and dropped from the town we were in last session into a forest for some odd reason and had to fight a necromancer lich with no weapons nor magic, soo yeah bad experience especially with my first 5e game (I primarily play pathfinder 1e and 3.5e) this leads to my game, kinda a explore the horrors of the underdark game, using some cool monsters that i adjusted from a splashbook from 3.5, and other beasties, party set out from a town that guarded an entrance to the cave systems, well all was going well i chose to make it a play by post and had different chats for the party with a like community one if they ran into one another, complete with local maps of the areas and stuff like that, well grog was the first, he played originally a owl themed birdfolk druid well he ventured pretty deep and sadly met his god in a old drow castle that was abandoned, during this enter bugbear whom i never oked his sheet just jumping in and rolling a bunch of nat 18-20s on his dice roller (refusing to show proof) and doing things that a bard definitely cant do at lvl 3 (i had joined a second camp ran by grog playing a half orc bard and this guy was pulling like 9th lvl spell effects out of his ***) and denied to show me, the dm his sheet, it was a nightmare as i was also running the opening for elsie, she had a shiva as her companion and i loved it, and grog gave me his backup sheet also so they started together, all the while bugbear was promptly kicked, banned, and blocked cause he started to harrass us for his not wanting to do common curtesy to the dm, like no way with normal raw point buy for a low fantasy game do you get 3 18s in stats with no 0 mods all +1 or better. saddly though the game kinda died after as grog was in the millitary so he had to cancel the games, but it was fun playing without the toxic guy!

Story 2: a non-that guy GM would've set up the fire resistant fast gunner enemies as the bbeg elite, to give PCs a taste of the endgame. A non-that guy GM would've also offered hooks/quests for the party to earn ways around said enemies' strengths. For instance, Zuko could have earned a power akin to a bank's armor piercing shell. One spell punctures the armor, another gets the fire damage through. Just some ideas. It's completely okay to build an enemy Suicide Squad kitted to hard counter your players, if the squad shows up rarely and if you later give the party tools to deal with the squad and have NPCs praise the party for standing up thise baddies in spite of the odds. Just my two cents.

At the conclusion in the Time Travel segment, advice for the GM at the time, if you want to challenge your players, just give the enemies more HP, and don't just make them immune to whatever the others can do. And for the love of God, don't make them do things the players won't enjoy doing and still screw them over with arbitrary homebrew rules because you don't like X player. That's bullying under a veil of running the game.

So, I've written up a little document for my Curse of Strahd game. Spoilers... The most recent incarnation of Tatyana was the sister of one of the members of a group who formed a Moose Cult, and called themselves The Order of the Moose, made weird moose noises, and wore silly hats. The silly hat can be used to summon the spectral moose, once per day. Yes, they did participate in some minor banditry, despite the rule of Strahd that NOBODY bandits in Barovia. They were caught, of course, but "Tatyana" begged for mercy, and frankly, they were so funny that they actually made Strahd laugh. He does have a rather dry sense of humor (he even has a couple of prank "traps" set up in the castle. That's canon. It's in the book!), so he allowed them to stay, but he did use his charm to steer them into a location that does the least damage, and doesn't disrupt his business or bother too many of his "herd of tax-paying livestock." Every now and again, he'll send out a servant to confront them, and if the servant does not bring back a silly hat to add to Strahd's collection, then the servant is punished, but the Order of the Moose is largely left alone. Strahd will on occasion come out to watch things, from the back of Bucephelus, with an invisibility spell on them both, just to get a tiny bit of amusement in his "life." These are the ONLY bandits every allowed in Barovia, and he actually does step in, now and them, to step on a few of them, if they get too far out of line. But he will always allow at least five of them to live, at all times, enough to keep the cult going, because his precious "Tatyana" enjoyed them so much. And just before the cultist who was her brother died of old age, Strahd came and turned him into a vampire spawn, to carry on the Order. He is a LOW wisdom vampire spawn, and his orders are to simply maintain the order, and prey on no people. They will block the pathway, but otherwise cause no difficulties. You can pay the toll, or go around them. If you don't want to do either, and YOU become aggressive, only then will they call up their champion for a challenge. So, the most trouble they actually cause is that now and then a merchant takes a few extra hours on a delivery, because they take a different path. That's it.

Always listen to your players. There are times when they will just say something off the cuff that is way better than what you are thinking. Case in point about 25 years ago I was GM'ing a Mechwarrior campaign. My players had a mercenary battalion of mechs now under their command. And the whole battalion was on Solaris VII after completing a contract. Well they got in trouble with a "Gladiator House" there and this group took the player "Colonel" hostage during a fake contract negotiation. The player "Lt. Colonel" got away and rallied the battalion. They couldn't go in in mechs, the bad guys would know they were coming. So instead they went as supply trucks full of everybody. And I mean everybody. Mechwarriros, the Infantry Security Company, Command staff, Maintenance techs, Supply staff, Support vehicle crews, cooks and bakers and accountants; everybody piled into trucks with assault rifles, grenades, and not a few rocket launchers. Around 300 in total. Long story short they blasted their way in to the compound in this industrial area. But as this place had all kinds of gear and munitions, it all quickly began catching on fire and spreading rapidly. That's when Lt. Colonel got a little frustrated. Some of the officers asked what they should do about the fires as these would keep them from rescuing the Colonel. Lt. Colonel said, "WELL P!SS ON IT! THERE'S 300 OF US HERE AND THAT'S GOT TO COUNT FOR SOMETHING!" From that moment on I didn't even roll dice, that plan was going to work. That's how you make memories.

Your story needs to be about the Players. It is fine to have an NPC traveling with the group, but they should never hog the spot light. the NPC needs to support the Players, anything else, and you should just be writing a book. It's not an easy lesson to learn, I totally get that. I had a campaign I was working on for about 12 years. In the early renditions of the campaign, I had a npc who was so overly vital to the setting, and every time, I watched the campaign burn before my eyes. Last time, I skipped that NPC entirely, the main story revolved entirely around the players. There were other stories going on, critical to the lore of setting that the players would observe, but this was used sparingly, and always for the purpose of giving the party some tool for their adventure. For instance, their home city was ruled by a powerful Pit fiend, in service to a homebrew god for hell (Think Hextor, but with my own little spin on it) the party had to infiltrate the castle of said city to save an NPC's, as the sieging forces prepared to defeat the Pit Fiend once and for all. At one point, a Player learned her lover was located in the throne room. In the throne room, the Pit Fiend is doing battle with NPC's and it is a pretty nasty encounter. I have the players roll reflex saves to dodge the NPC's being flung by the Pit Fiend (failure would only be like a d6 of damage.) but they learned from the pit fiend that the BBEG from the PC's adventures had ties to the npc's. The PC's find the lifeless lover, and have to fight a bearded devil. Every round or so, the players would ask me, "are the other heroes doing well against the Pit Fiend" and I would give a report, but I kept the story on the players. They saved the lover, gain some awesome loot and meet with the NPC's to talk about their own BBEG before parting ways to the next destination. When the time finally came for their own epic final battle, one of my newer players said he was thinking about the 'devil on the throne' and how it must of felt to finally settle the score with someone who caused so much suffering. That is how I know I succeed, my players had a memorable time, they loved the adventure, loved what I put them through and I was able to finally end this campaign. DM's, cherish your players, for there is no campaign without them.

How about have the police come and investigate the situation, and then arrest the TEACHER for abusing a minor, and let the minor go, because "It's a clear-cut case of self-defense." Put the Teacher's character in prison for several years, and tell the player, "You can make a new character, or you can leave the group. I won't stand for this abuse, though. You can have a second chance with a second character, but there will NOT be a third chance. You play nicely, or you don't play, at all."

I'm going to say this now as a forever DM of 29 years. If your DM had a DMPC, they are a trash DM, no there is no justification I will accept to exempt the ones who come here to defend this. If you join a game where the DM has a DMPC, leave and never hi n that DMs game again. We get to control the entire world, that includes it's past heroes, all the leaders, all the business owners, all the shopkeeps, the villains, the supervillains, heck even the gods. If that's not enough for the DM then this game isn't about the players, it's about them and that's bad.

  • @Crystan

When your DM asks you to "roll to see if you enjoy being r*ped" that's a giant RED FLAG. GFTO of there ASAP. There is literally no justification for that unless it's an RP specifically themed that way among consenting players and agreed in advance.

It gets a bit repetitive I know but let me say it again: YOU are the only one who decides what YOUR character does or doesn't do! Short of full blown domination you decide your PCs choices, decisions and action in game. If your DM ever tries to take that from you stop them and politely remind them it is your character. If they have a problem with that find a new DM because that one sucks.

With story #2, I'd be angry and see how futile the game was already going to be with the fireproof archers. Some GMs should be expected to write down their enemies' abilities and defenses, and also game settings, *before* players make their characters...put that info in an envelope and give it to a trustworthy player, or something. Then if players question the GM's motives, they can prove they aren't doing things on the fly just to completely screw over players' ability to play. It's not fair, or fun, to have a god-powered GM who makes enemies that he knows you can't fight or puts you in settings they know you can't operate in. #3, the GM kidnapping and force r**ing your character? I'd leave even faster than #2. No rolling to see if I 'liked it'. Just slamming the door as hard as I could on the way out. That's not acceptable even in a pretend situation. That's disgusting and mentally abusive, never mind how it would affect a person who had actually been r**ed sometime in their life. In some states, that could possibly even get the GM in legal trouble if the player wished to.

Hello. Local dmpcs defender here! There's a lot of general Dmpcs hate and while I understand why considering the activities that take place in stories like these it makes me sad. Dmpcs are such a big part of the culture of my group and I think they're great and, at least in my experience, add a lot to the experience if they're done well. I apologize for what's going to be a long comment but I think I want to explain why I think Dmpcs can be good actually. My group has a few forever GMs. My boyfriend and one of my best friends among them. Now my boyfriend *loves* being a gm. But the one thing he never liked, to the point that it affects his enjoyment and investment in the genes he runs, is feeling like he's not able to meaningfully interact with the player characters as much as he would like to. He described it as 'playing life guard' and he really didn't like it. So he started making characters that were just basically his additional party member so he could have a character that was playing along with ours instead of just facilitating them and everyone loved them and he started having a lot more fun and some of our other gms started doing it to. And that is why I defend DMPCs with my dying breath. I will also add that my group is a very RP heavy group. We value interpersonal character dynamics and growth so much we're helping my boyfriend develop a system where character bonds and conflict are a major mechanical element. So I understand that what we want out of games isn't for everyone but it still makes me sad to see so many people talking about how dmpcs are worthless and bad and no one should use them when they've done a lot to shape the way me and my friends look at and play these games.

While I enjoy your retellings of these, I would ask that if you're going to read ones with anime character names, would it be possible to look up how to say them properly? This happens a lot in any that reference anime characters. While it's more than fine that you haven't seen them, other folks have and I had to double take to see what it was you were referencing when you pronounced it that way. Yusuke is pronounced "You-s'kay". I normally wouldn't comment but it's something I'd noticed in a few different readings as I said.
