I do not consider myself a master of cinematography, but everything you stated is true. I wasnt bored because I love the novel but the film is like Valium and Xanax put together. People that defend it are just hardcore fans that were waiting for anything of Dune since Lynchs version. You cant blame them...but if this is a masterpiece...what are Lord of the Rings or Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind? Directed by God?

The books actually fucking suck. Seriously they become worse and worse page after page. The author clearly don't know how to write and the characters are cartoonish. The world building is literally plagiarism of other books and ideas, like Asimov empire... But done badly. It was good for its time because it has the level of depth that people were used to 60 years ago and it's a blatant allusion to the war in Vietnam and shit that happened in the middle east shortly after. That is, did you read the fighting? This is literally crazy shit for a book considered so "serious". It's really cartoonish stuff that not even the Lord of the Rings. 20000 years of progress and humanity doesn't even remember the basic strategy of the early Middle Ages... In my opinion, the author has never opened a history book, nor a physics or other science book. All sci-fi books like this go through hoops to explain the bullshit. But at least books like All Tommorrow are original, even if they have an undertone against some fascist ideologies (which is what dune is desperately trying to do). That is, Dune is a series about "you shouldn't follow charismatic leaders" that poses as a serious novel when if you read it aloud it seems like a comedy. It probably would have worked as a comedy The film then seemed much more consistent and coherent than the book.

How come you are the only reviewer on yt saying this? There should be a lot more people attacking this giant bore of a franchise. Is there a campaign to suppress dissent? There are a couple of great goodreads reviews of the novel Dune that capture my views. One makes the same point that you do about Paul being a Gary Stu - perfect in all respects. The other raises the question of how come a messiah is also a great scholar, warrior and leader. That's not what real messiahs were historically. These are different archetypes that do not converge in one human. Jesus was not a scholar or warrior, nor was Muhammad.

Yea me and my girl can’t figure out why people are saying it’s a brilliant masterpiece. The lead character has no real conflict in the movie and by the end he is so perfect that I never thought for a second that he was going to die or lose, killing all suspense in the process. People keep saying the book is different and the love interest is portrayed completely differently in it, and they use that as a defense of the movie which I don’t get either.

At this point I've just given up and will stick to Lawrence Of Arabia if I want a desert epic with minimal dialogue. That at least has palpable emotional depth. We need a new Oscar category for "Best navel-gazing pretentious cack disguised as blockbuster", it seems. Oh and I don't care how many times Tinseltown tries to foist him upon us as THE next hot ticket, Timothee Chalamet has all the rizz of soggy disintegrating newspaper.

I just watched it, and although I went to the bathroom a few times and kept the movie rolling, I really do agree. It's a shame because I want to like it so much. I WANT TO LIKE IT! And you know what, there were some okay parts like when he wrangles up the sand worm and rides it. I just can't enjoy it that much. The dialogue is painfully boring. Listen, my girlfriend actually wrestled the remote from me and put something else on. I wrestled it back and forcefully put it back on. She fell asleep after that, and I kept watching. Nice visuals, but I just don't know, man. I feel like as a fan of movies like this, I should sit down and watch the whole movie alone start to finish and form a true opinion about it at that point. However, I worry that the experience of watching Dune 2 alone would be really boring and really painful. I don't know. I want to wrap up my comment by just saying, has a motherfucker in this movie never heard of a shield before? There are so many scenes in this movie where people are running around with shortswords into a big, messy battle comprised of a bunch of people fighting with nothing but shortswords. Bruh, the Spartans in the battle of Thermopylae had shields, and that was in 480 BC. These futuristic warring tribes can't figure out a shield but they can figure out so much other amazing technology? Wtf. There it is I said it.

Just seen it for the third time and seen back onto back with the first one it slowly gives away its rhythm, it's pacing. There are so many details of what informs what, one thing mirrored in another person and so on, its beautifully constructed. There is a lot of story telling under the surface. The best example how this video is missing all the points is that Rautha is not the villain he is so much like a mirror image of Paul, his function is to show how bad Paul is. Who is NOT a Messiah. People say he is. So he says he is. And nothing what Paul can do can stir him from his downfall. He can't help but giving in to being a self fulfilling prophecy. It's not a bad thing that you don't like the film but how you don't get any of the major points is baffling.

Long post incoming. 1. I like the whole concept of Dune, I like the first movie, the sequel was nice, but I can understand your criticisms. When it comes to the main protagonist Paul, I can understand why somebody would consider him a Mary Sue (Gary Sue is the male version). In the Matrix series Neo was the Messiah, but even he made some errors because he’s still human. But when it comes to Paul he got everything right the first time. The humans in the Dune Universe train themselves to the peak of human performance, but they’re still not deities. 2. As far as Dune Part 2 being boring, sometimes I like long slow science-fiction movies like Unbreakable & Blade Runner 2049 that isn’t just full on action. I like more of the story to be fleshed out. Those are 2 sci-fi movies that people consider boring. I think Stephen King’s novels get called boring because he does the same thing. 3. And when it comes to Zendaya being casted, I think the filmmakers wanted well-known actors in this movie so that they can sell more tickets. That’s probably the only reason they had Dave Bautista & Jason Momoa in this series.

I agree paul is a mary sue but the only reason a mary sue works is if they have some kind of anti hero transformation that contrasts their perfection. And thats exactly what happens to paul. Infact it was foreshadowed multiple times in his visions and diolog in both movies. When i watched Rey in the new starwars movies back in 2015, i was sooo excited to see her become the villain. Because she was a mary sue i felt this is naturally what would make sense for her character. When kylo Ren asks her to join the dark side i was ready to see her transformation and what an interesting character she would have been if her writing actually took ger down that path. But nope. She barely flinched and was just a one dimentional perfect mary sue for the rest of the 3 movies. Huge disappointment. But with Dune, paul does actually follow the character ark i wanted to see for Rey in starwars; he becomes the anti-hero... and im here for it. WE, are here for it. If you werent sleeping through the movies you would have caught this detail too...

@@YourVideoEssaysSuck In the books it's elaborated on a bit more but, when he says "he sees a narrow way through", he wasn't talking about saving the fremin here, he was talking about revenge. there was one path to revenge. that's why in the beginning of the movie before Jessica drinks the water of life and becomes one mind with the sisterhood's plans, she warns paul that his father did not believe in revenge but paul responds with "well i do" it shows what actually drives his actions, and its not to "liberate" or "free" the fremin. Paul becomes conflicted though as his love grows for Chani, but after he too drinks the water of life in the end; he picks the path of revenge over Chani because it best serves his goals for revenge and subconsciously serves the Benegeserit's goals which is what the water of life awakens inside him. In the books and im sure Denis will elaborate more on this in the next film paul's actions pretty much ruin the fremin in the end. But you dont need to take my word for it, both Frank Herbert and Denis are on recording confirming paul is the Anti-Hero of the story of Dune and Herbert wanted this story to be a cautionary tale against charismatic leaders like Paul, an allegory warning against cult leaders we encounter in our own lives; Trump, Putin, Biden etc.

The books are good, detailed (VERY DATED) little (very very long) space-opera feudalism in space with a nice aesthetic fairy tales, but they're tedious. I've read the first one a couple of times just to see what I was missing. The second one, Messiah, is the best, and it's the shortest. With 'Children it just goes off the rails and keeps going. Btw the TV series is not bad, recommend it over THIS SELF INDULGENT SLUDGE FEST. Villeneuve delievered Arrival, which is genius, BR2049, which is genius... and then this total pile of 5 hours of crap after we all assumed he WAS THE ONE to get Dune right. It is normal that Paul wins, Paul sees in the future, he knows more than everybody else in the universe, his enemys don't even know he is still alive. He is the ultimate powerfull being (the Kwisatz Haderach, he knows everything about everybody, their past, present and future. He saw the hole thing in advance as soon as he drank the poison. But, if you listened to the dialogs, he knows that if he wins, he will kill billions with this holly war. He doesn't want to kill all of these people, but he seeks vengence. This movie is not about good wining against evil, it is about dilemas and it shows the dangers of heroism and religions, the fremen lost all their mental strenght because of the religion around paul they aren't fremen anymore they are pawns of the Bene Gesserit. Plus, Paul kills so many people for a "good cause". It is a hidden tragedy. Sorry if you didn't get the real meaning of the story and didn't enjoy it as it was.

He has been biologically created by the bene gesserir to fit into the proficy to become the Fremens Meassiah. Films theme is how people are easly manipulated through religion and propaganda, and how bad a Messiah is. Paul is the opposite of a Mary Sue, he literally is genetically modified and trained by the biggest most skilled warriors in the universe to become the ultimate weapon. Story is how he realizes that it's all a hoax and him struggleing with the morality of it. @@YourVideoEssaysSuck Paul technically wins at the end but he also loses on both a grand scale and personally. On the grand scale he unleashes the Jihad, a holy war, on to the galaxy which kills billions on hundreds of worlds. This is referenced in both movies and is the reason he's reluctant to go south. It's the price he knows he has to pay to get his revenge on the Harkonnens and try to create a better future. On a personal level he loses his mother as a motherly figure (she is essentially possessed by the spirits of her female ancestors), his father was ofc. killed in the first movie along with Duncan and many others he knew, and he loses Chani who rejects him for becoming the messiah figure. This will all probably get explored more in Dune Messiah, and as I understand it (haven't read the books) if Dune 1 and 2 are Paul's rise, Messiah is basically his fall. In terms of genetically perfect it's less physicality and more bloodline and mentality. The Bene Gesserit were more interested in enhancing the mind and skills of their messiah because they knew that the messiah person would essentially be able to see the future once their powers fully developed. Combine that with training from some of the best money trainers money can buy and you get somebody very skilled, almost unbeatable. It's notable that he still struggles to beat Feyd even with his visions of the future, and in Part 1 can't beat either Duncan or Gurney. It's also a little different to typical Gary Stu/Mary Sues in that they are usually plucked literally from the street with no training and then are unexplainably exceptional. Paul is given pretty good reason to be exceptional, and like the comment above says his exceptionality as the messiah figure who struggles against a future mass slaughter in his name that can't be prevented is the main theme of the movie and books. I will say not liking it is fine, everybody has different tastes and I'll agree both movies are pretty slow and take their time. If there wasn't to be a third one to wrap it up I'd definitely have agreed the second wasted too much time in certain areas given there was other stuff to show.

But you've bought it, so you need to comfort yourself by arguing with people who aren't as susceptible to Hollywood style mind control programming. You must confirm that your programming is 'correct'.. It's too painful to realize you're not just consuming the product, but YOU ARE the product. 😂

I agree with you except: I loved part 1... wasnt perfect, gave it 8/10... cared about the characters... dune part 2 almost put me to sleep... so god damn boring... nothing made sense... anti climactic... cheesy turn arounds... all the villains end up being pointless flimsy shits... but they spent so much time building them up... only to throw them in the garbage.... Its like Denis's trying to be Game of thrones like... but completly fails at it.... those movies nail visual, costumes... acting somewhat... but the plot, pacing, story is WAY OFF.... I spent mucho $$$ on the LOTR trilogy tiwce (dvd at first, blu ray after...) I will NEVER buy the dune trilogy... gave part 2 a 4/10

Alia Atreides was a no show ... got to be the strangest edit of this film 🤔

@@Stitchman3875 What does that have to do with Palpatine? Also, the fact that he attacks the houses at the end makes no sense. He is not prepared for an all out war with all the houses. Normally, this is what should get them all killed. Without preparation, he cannot have a war. The fact that the Fremen all get on space ships and apparently seem to attack the houses is so ludicrous of an idea I actually cringed. The fact that the houses denied his ascendance also means that spice is not all that important anymore and they don't really care for it. It undermines the whole reason why the story even exists: spice.

@@Alnivol666 In the next story the Fremen become a massive army by which they scatter throughout the universe committing genocides and colonizations in Paul's name. By the time the next book/movie starts Paul's Empire kills at least 61 billion people and eradicated civilizations, and eliminated followers of rival religious devotion. It's kind of like the Crusades, the Colonization of other nations and so fourth. The spice is how he gains control. If he destroyed spice production, there would be no interstellar travel, all commerce in the universe will stop, the Bene Gessarit will lose their powers, and because everyone is addicted to it, they will die from withdrawal. The other houses didn't understand how dangerous Paul is.
