Dumb Decisions: Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers (4/2/2023)
In one corner, you have a slow runner in Ketel Marte. In the other corner, you have a six-time Gold Glove winner in Mookie Betts, who has thrown out Marte multiple times on the basepaths before. So, in a 1-1 ballgame, with runners on the corners and nobody out, is sending Marte home on a hit to shallow right field the best idea? Well, apparently the Arizona Diamondbacks thought so, and it backfired on them pretty badly. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

It would be one thing if it were at the warning track or something, but hell I could make that throw from shallow right
Always a small chance that Mookie air mails it but if you are figuring that will happen you should not coach third.
Your first Dumb Decisions video should've been Buck Showalter going with Ubaldo in a do or die playoff game in Toronto... but that's just my Orioles bias shining through. Great video.

Twice, he managed a team, that, won, the, World Series, with, their, next, manager, it appears that he just doesn't have, "The, Killer Instinct," that Toronto team, was, lucky, the, AL East, was, weak, their flaws, were, ultimately, exposed, in the, Playoffs.
Running on Mookie is like trying to ice skate uphill. Only a guy like Ricky Henderson or Kenny Lofton could pull that off.

Oooooh. If you ever get your hands on some Gene Mauch footage, you're going to have a WHALE of a time with this series, I can tell you that much. XD
I was watching the game in the background while I was opening Baseball Cards and I saw that play either Perez got greedy or think that Mookie going to send the ball to the dugout.
Tony may never make another dumb decision in baseball again. It doesn't matter though. Unless a coach comes along that makes dumb decisions on the regular, Tony was the first Dumb Decision on JG7. So, forevermore, a baseball coach who makes a dumb decision will have said to have....Pulled a Perezchica.
Even against a below-average RF, keep the runner at 3rd... set up your best hitters to drive in the run... that's what they are there to do.
Not that this necessarily applies here, but Bill James quoted someone as saying, “If a 3rd Base coach doesn’t get anyone thrown out at home, he’s not doing his job.”

Speaking of which, in, Game Seven, of the, 2001, World Series, the, first, run, was, scored, but, unfortunately, the, first, out of the inning, was, made at, third base, and, no, more, runs scored, when the Yankees, later, tied it, the, second, runner didn't even attempt, another, base, leading, the, usually-neutral, Tim McCarver, (R.I.P.), to, harshly, criticize it, any delusional Yankee homers who still think they, were, actually, somehow, "better," need only look at that situation, to obliterate their, "argument," on paper, that, was, like, 1960, only, without, the, walk-off, HR, those Yankees just had no business getting that close to, victory.
Yes love baseball it can be done all season every day
@JaguarGator7 Here's an idea for a dumb decisions. In Game 2 of the 1980 ALCS, the Yankees were down by one run against the Royals in the Top of the 8th inning. After a Willie Randolph single, Bob Watson would get a base hit. After advancing to 3rd, Third Base Coach Mike Ferraro was confident that Willie Randolph could tie the game and so he rounded Randolph home, further evident when Willie Wilson's throw overshot cutoff man U L Washington. However, Wilson's throw went straight to George Brett, who would then fire a bullet to Darrell Porter, getting Randolph out and keeping the score 3-2. It says a lot when both Owner George Steinbrenner and General Manager Gene Michael are angry at you. Down by 1 and you send the runner from 3rd? Not a great idea. The Royals would win Game 2 by the aforementioned score and then the ALCS altogether.

Those Yankees, never, really, recovered, following the death of Thurman Munson, and, after, Reggie Jackson had a, disastrous, 1981, World Series, they panicked, and, let him go to the Angels, where he would make two, more, ALCS, appearances, while, the Yankees would, swiftly, fall into decline, for, over a decade.
Don't run on Mookie. Liking this channel!
Another Dumb Decision episode you could do is Yankees' Manager, Billy Martin, sending two runners home in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Chicago White Sox on August 1985. The Yankees eventually lost in extra innings.
As Red Sox fan, seen it from left field. Don't run on Mookie!

Speaking of which, their run's over, they needed a dropped catch to beat the Orioles, and, also, lost, Xander Bogaerts, and, while, the Rays may, not, have a stadium agreement, and/or, a real fanbase, they, most, definitely, do have a team that has a plan, for, the, present, if, not, the, future.
Dumb Decisions For Baseball. Cool
Baseball season is LONG. You're going to be doing a lot of these.
Odds that runner on 3rd, no outs eventually scores is only 44%. Mookie is a special defender however. On balance I'd say it was the right decision to send the runner. It's tough to throw out the runner on a ground ball base hit.
Runner on 3rd with no outs....ya gotta like your chances. I wish Betts was on my team omygosh!!

I thought the JG7 Dumb Decisions debut was gonna be what happened in the 2022 NLCS, but this isn't a bad start. I'm not sure what the hell Tony Perezchica was thinking considering who the Dodgers' RF is. You can't treat Betts like most RFs, especially with a runner as slow as Marte is.

Catcher's opinion over pitcher's.
The only thing I can figure is that Perezchica must have forgotten who was in right field. Not that it's an excuse. That works against most right fielders, but it's a bad gamble no matter who it is. As you said, the next two guys were likely to get the run in anyway.
That’s something I do in MLB the Show to get a save
