    Those 80s petcocks wrecked my life so many times as I knew nothing about how to use them correctly. I ended up going "modern" with fuel injection. Never knew bikes could pee themselves, after half of dozen times (all my fault) & 1800 bucks later I sold them. Thank you for the vlog, GREAT topic, nice Link! p.s. nice job keeping it rated PG

    Great informative vid as usual Scott. I must be lucky my 16 yr old petcock(which I check regularly by running the fuel line which goes to the carb into a jug for a couple of nights) does not leak a drop although I know that could change at any time.I do have on the shelf a DRZ400E petcock which gives you the same reserve as the stock one and will get round to fitting it at some point. Ride safe from the UK Martin

    Nice job! Yeah, you're probably right, on assuming that they designed it like that to prevent gas from spilling out, in the event of an accident. (Even though, it's only a 2 - 1/2 gallon tank) safety features, like putting the squeeze bar on the handle of these newest pushmowers. Ridiculous... My old 1950 Massy Ferguson 135', just has the old standard petcock.. you have to remember to shut it OFF. Just like remembering to park it in gear, and set the brake.. really difficult '. 😅. Now, for best performance and piece of mind, we have to go in and remove all that shit! Put it back the way that they used to be.

    Hey man, first of all, thank you for that video. It helped me understand a lot of things as a beginner rider. Second, I have the stock petcock paired with the keihin fcr39 carb. My bike won’t run when the petcock is at the ON position and will stall on idle at the PRI position. From your video, I can understand that it has something to do with the vaccum of the petcock since there isnt any hose or vaccum block on the vaccum port. My question is, while I wait to buy a ON/OFF/RES petcock, what can I do to make my bike rideable? Block the vaccum port of the stock petcock? Thanks mate!

  • @linksgarage1985

    @linksgarage1985

    2 ай бұрын

    First of all, thanks for watching! I wrote an entire comment about the PRI position because I didn’t read that in your comment. Unfortunately, blocking off the vacuum port at the petcock won’t work. Because there is a diaphragm inside that works in vacuum and won’t let the fuel flow if there isnt any. I think you’re stuck until you get a standard petcock. You could maybe take the vacuum petcock apart and remove diaphragm inside if it’s like an emergency and you have to get home. But I really wouldn’t recommend it. My recommendation is to not ride it until you get the right petcock man.

    Valid question and the answer is yes. if you replace with a non-vacuum shut off, they you must shut it off ever time or a leaking needle valve seat in the carb will flood the engine. If the petcock vacuum switch fails just run it on PRI to get it home then replace it with the same type. That vacuum switch is there for a reason.

  • @joep2177
    @joep217711 ай бұрын

    Do you shut the petcock off each time you park the bike? My understanding is if the float valve sticks and the petcock is left in the on position when you park the bike, gas will flood the cylinder. Remembering to turn it off and back on would seem to be the only drawback. That and the reduced reserve range. Switch to a standard petcock and removing the PAIR valve gets rid of all those vacuum lines and fittings which is nice.

I guess for off-roading applications, simple is better, but for riding on the street in 15 years I've never had a vacuum petcock leave me stranded! But I also maintain my shit and make sure to visually inspect things often....if I have doubts, I rebuild or replace. But thanks for the informative video.

    @@GotusTotus yes. If you are leaving pair valve hooked up, you’ll need to cap that end also. One cap on carb, one cap on ole plastic piece that goes to pair valve.

    @@linksgarage1985 so where the hose goes from the pair valve to the carb and tank, I disconnected the plastic nozzle that has 2 connectors. Then I plugged it with a screw. Is that okay or should I just disconnect the entire hose and plug it straight on the pair valve? Sorry for being slow. Just bought a 2024 and really don’t want to screw it up. I assume plugging it straight at the valve would eliminate the need to keep that mess of hoses on the bike

    @@GotusTotus all good man. This may help. But you are correct. You can get rid of all the hoses, cap it on the carb, and cap the hard pipe for the pair valve and you’ll be good. Check it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/laesl6mMZbiucaQ.htmlsi=KmMT5PVuSANJskJ1

    The gas in the oil problem is because of a leaking needle/float problem in the carb not the Petcock. Without a vacuum valve how does a manual petcock prevent this issue?

    You are correct about the needle/ float. The manual petcock is more to prevent the potential of a diaphragm tear or failure. Preventing you from getting fuel. If the needle / float in the carb is bad, either petcock will have gas in the oil.

    Yes, manual petcock needs to be shut off when engine is shut off....needles can be over powered from gravity, and hence gas leak....seen it happened on many older motorcycles and my neighbors Old goldwing had a manual petcock for some stupid reason.

    Hey, it's been like 8 years, since I rode motorcycles. Just picked up a 2023 Drz400sm and I've been having issues, where starting it up, it takes forever and I have to hold the ignition button, while it does, which makes me feel like, I'm gonna burn out my starter. Am I not setting the petcock right? Should I put it on prime, when I park it? I had 80's bike's, so I used to always shut the fuel off. I just filled it, for the first time, since the dealership and I used premium, just because I feel like, it'll make it run, smoother. Edit: I'm retarded. I forgot about the choke. Talk about, being a beginner, all over, again.

    And do not put it on prime. Keep it on “On” prime lets the fuel flow all the time. Keep it on the on position. It’ll only pull fuel while it’s running because it’s vacuum operated. Congrats on the new bike, and welcome back to motorcycling!

    Swapped the carb a few weeks ago. For some reason it didn’t want to give me top end. Like 75mph was all it wanted. Tried every jet combo. Have tons of bottom end power and snap. Just lost it up top. Put the factory carb in, and smacked 104mph. I guess if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. A he one FCR would probably do the trick.

    Hey would my DRZ cut off 10min into a highway ride due to a leaking petcock? My DRZ would run for about 10min on the highway then shut off. It would take a couple tries to start up again but it would start then cut off again after 10min. I noticed the petcock was leaking I hope this fix solves my problem. Thank you!

    You could check it by switching it to PRI while you ride. It’ll get constant fuel that way. If you are on “ON” and it shuts off, it might be a vacuum issue. Something not capped off right. Just try the PRI mode and see if it changes anything.
