Update from last comment: I removed the back and held the blower in place while someone else turned the motor shaft. It worked!!! Was able to get the new motor in, and the dryer purrs like a kitten. Thank you !!! The video provided excellent information and saves me money and time!

I can't tell you how much money you saved me. I got the driver motor from John's Applicance in Daytona Beach FL and installed after watching your video. I feel like I should send you a monetary tip for this great video. I have bookmarked your site here and will refer to it the next repair I have to make on my washer or dryer. Thanks again, Mike

@partselect I purchased the motor through partselect.ca, followed your amazing video and the dryer works!! Hubby didn't think I could do it but I proved him wrong....again ;D BTW: the price for the motor on partselect.ca was $90- everywhere else was approx. $160. So, by doing it myself I saved: landfill space, almost $200, and having to go new-dryer hunting. I've never been happier to do laundry LOL! thank you!!!

Same failure experience with the cracked blower plastic and vise grip slipping on the motor shaft. This thing is brilliantly designed by whirlpool engineering so that they can get you to call for service. The square part of the blower is located in a terrible place and the selection of plastic composite is such that it will disintegrate in good time plus all the generated heat. Easy my arse!

I cracked and then obliterated the square piece coming off the blower (to which the motor attaches) It really was stuck hard. I guess I either need a new blower now or a new dryer. Not sure what I could have done differently. I couldn't get it with the channel-locks so I put a 7/8 in wrench on the outside and the square blower piece just cracked off.

Drum Wheel: 9:40 You'll notice that at 9:47 the drum wheel is in a different position. In order to achieve this you will need to use something to prop the dryer drum up (we used a football) to fit the piece in. Once there, when you attach the belt to the wheel and motor, the tension will safely pull the drum wheel up to the correct position. This is by design. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below and we will answer accordingly, even if it's 1 or 2 years later.

My dryer broke from having a bath mat that was too wet in it. It would no longer tumble and makes an electric hum then kicks off. I bought a new belt thinking it was that, I changed it but it still will not tumble and only makes a hum noise then kicks off??? I don't know what else could be the problem or if it is this drive motor assembly??? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. This happened in the spring, I'm just now trying to make the repairs!

This is an amazing, comprehensive video. My whirlpool (could be exactly the same dryer) hums but the drum wont start. When the drum is turned manually, it starts going. Heat builds up and i smell something burning. It gets extremely hot. Does this indicate the motor needs to be replaced? Is there a step by step checklist to eliminate possible problems? Thank you kindly, for your help...

the sqaure piece of the motor shank is not stripped. It not just turns and can not get a grip on it. Can i use vice grips?

  • @bcockton

the small square piece at the back is all rounded. it must have be on there quite hard, the wrench is just rounding off all the corners and i can no longer get a grip on it. I really don't want to use Vice-grips, but i can't think of another solution.

Hi, and thanks for the question. It's typically the best idea to purchase a replacement part that is OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), that is designed to fit your specific model. All of our parts are OEM, and you can double check your model number on our website and find the specific motor that you need. You can find the part Steve is replacing in this video here: www.partselect.com/PS334304-Whirlpool-279827-Drive-Motor-with-Pulley.htm?SourceCode=15. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any issues that we can help with!
