How to Fix a Noisy Dryer - Troubleshooting and Repairing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I show you how to troubleshoot and repair and noisy dryer. This dryer was making a bad vibrating and rattling sound. It turned out that the blower wheel was damaged and needed replaced.
The clothes dryer in this video is a Whirlpool Dryer. This repair will apply to Kenmore, Roper, Maytag and many other models. At first I thought something was lodged in the blower wheel housing, but it turned out that it was broken.
After the dryer was repair, we checked the venting and found out that it was plugged with lint. So my theory on why the blower wheel failed is that it overheated and became brittle due to the plugged dryer vent.

It's September 20th, 2017, I'm 49 years old and I just fixed my dryer thanks to your video. There wasn't anything broken, but while taking off the front of it we heard something metal drop. Apparently a coin somehow got stuck somewhere and that was making the noise. Thanks Mr. Bill Newberry, you just saved me some money.

This was spot on. I had to do the maintenance kit on a relative's Kenmore (Whirlpool made "110" model prefix) dryer and I suspected that the blower wheel may have damage after watching this video. Sure enough, both the maintenance kit and the blower wheel were an issue. This video was right on the money. Even after Mr. Newberry's passing, his videos continue to help others. RIP, Mr. Newberry.

Great informative video, thank you for posting it. I heard something running around inside the dryer. It was a chipmunk as it got in through the vent. I placed a black plastic bag around the dryer vent and turned it on and he ran into the bag. He appeared dead but had lint stuffed in his nose and my wife took it out with tweezers and he recovered and ran away after a minute.

Once a year I take the outside cover off and use a leaf blower from the inside to blow out the dryer tubing. Mine runs across the house for about 20 feet (solid tube, not ribbed), so stuff builds up pretty quick :) Clogged vents can cause quite a few issues. Glad to see this guy only had a broken blower fan!!

My Whirlpool dryer was making the same noise. One of the rear rollers that support the drum was bad. They come in pairs and you'd be well advised to replace both of them even if only one is bad at this time as well as replacing the drum belt. It may save you from doing the same work over again if and when the second roller goes bad or the belt breaks.

Seriously , this video helps me so much. I swear it is the same noise. I am a fix it or toss it kinda guy. My partner is an analytical kinda guy. My dryer vibrated about 24 inches from the wall after I had reconnected the venting which was shite. Doesn't seem so bad when you spell it that way. None the less I digress. GREAT video. The Edward is sleeping and it is 3:21 in TORONTO. I think I will just take off the back and look at the blade. Sorry for the long email but I want you to know what I am doing. Cheers my Friend. D

I have a Maytag Legacy dryer that I have replaced drum rollers, idler wheel, checked Motor shaft for end play and there is none. I've spun the motor shaft by hand and it free wheels like a ceiling fan. Front drum guides are good. I've checked blower fan and all fins are in good shape and no wobble on shaft. Vent flex hose is clear all the way out! Still getting a loud roar while running and sometimes it sounds ok. Baffled. If it was something obvious I'd have it repaired by now. Had it apart twice and am stumped.

Question for you: Have you ever heard of a dryer making an "expansion bang" noise? Like the metal inside the dryer is contracting and expanding, and making a loud bang noise? Our dryer has been doing this ever since we bought it last September. The manufacturer just keeps saying it's "normal operation". It makes the noise about every 5 to 6-1/2 minutes, until it gets thru to the cool down cycle. Thanks!

Great video, because of the explanations included, especially the root-cause (lack of duct maintenance! I suspect the thumbs downs from those hooples who don't do duct maintenance...they deserve what they get!), good demo and editing...not so hot on the distracting headbanger music either...but I'll get over that... My dryer works, but squeals like a pig until it warms up (I suspect idler or one of the roller bearings is on the way out), so I'll have to take mine apart soon to check and repair. I'll be back after that...

What's the brand of machine? To me it sounds like you have a plugged up venting system. Hot air cannot leave the dryer. This would cause either the thermal fuse to trip or maybe your safety thermostat has tripped.

Heres the model and if the thermal fuse worked with the continuity test the thermal fuse should still be good right? _lh3.googleusercontent.com/O1dwWTjEtvsT-FA6w1GSUjFrwTR2HKkYnCilaVeDsVxa_pyMYHh53guiuRpcq_3Q07TkGUPREA_

Do you read the schematics when repairing? Also, I've been curious for a long time: do you own an appliance repair comany?

Just read his obituary posted further down, & it seems he passed away just a month after this video was posted. He was 38, an electrician & owned an appliance repair company. And was my favorite KZread host. RIP

Would that hospital be "Mount Carmel Hospital" which is just north of the vacant lot shown in Google Maps where the "Mount Carmel "Members only Fitness Center" emblazoned on Bills Tee Shirt. Curious. He seems perfectly healthy in the two year old video.
