@@endapian But there are elements to "prog" that non-prog songs don't share. So it's not just pop music, it's prog music. The BeeGees and the Cars were in the pop charts at the same time, but they were playing identifiably different types of music.

In my opinion this is one of the best songs ever made! Supertramp is fantastic. Amazing albums, great songs and brilliant musicians

I'm forever jealous of your generation.

This was the most progressive Supertramp ever got. It has all the elements to intrigue a Prog rock fan. The length, the time signatures and the emotion to check off all the right boxes.

I think Brother Where You Bound runs it very close. 😊

You really miss how good the bass is if you’re not wearing good headphones. And Heliwell is the unsung hero of this band, filling in on vocals and he does pretty much all of the wind instruments and a lot of other things - he even does keyboard at times.

Another band where the musicianship really stands out. Crisis,What Crisis Is also a great album.

So many gems on this sadly overlooked album. Easy Does It/Sister Moonshine, Lady, Soapbox Opera and The Meaning among others

Not actually church bells, that was Big Ben in London.

I was lucky enough to see this tour way back in 1977 in Montreal. They were at the top of their game at that time. Thanks for the memory. What an amazing sounding band live. Thanks !!

Me too! At the Place des Nations. First time any of us then saw the starfield (not counting Star Trek) and the approach to the prison bars. Chills just thinking of it.

I saw them in '79 (breakfast in America) in Ottawa outdoors . I was beside a wall of speakers and damaged my hearing that day but they were amazing .

My favorite Supertramp song. I love the studio version--but they do it great live too!

Little bit of trivia: The horn section was used, for a number of years, by Canadian network CTV's investigative newsmagazine W5, as its theme music.

Crime, Crisis and Moments, absolute class LPs saw Supertramp in 74 and 76 and ime so glad I did 👌

Should see „Fools Overture“ live at Night of the Proms with choir and symphony orchestra- Voice Roger Hodgson! Never forget 12 Minutes of standing ovations!

I saw them live, 1983 in Amsterdam. It was beyond great, I was completely absorbed in the music, no longer aware of my surroundings or the wether. During this song it started to thunder. A huge flash of light went over the stadium (around 10:42 in this video). And I shouted to my friends "What a light show!" 🤣 I won't ever forget the looks on their faces and why they laughed so hard. To my defence, I was very young and hadn't see much yet. It's a sweet memory every time I hear this song and it still makes me giggle.

Love this. But Supertramp always makes me so sad. My friend who lived across the road when we were kids was a big Supertramp fan. He killed himself in 1987 at the age of 21 and he left a note with lyrics from Supertramp. I always think of him. It was such a terrible thing. He was like a brother to me.

The bells before WC were Big Ben in London

Hodgeson's solo work "Had A Dream(Sleeping With the Enemy) is not to be missed. It's from his album Eye of the Storm about a friend's suicide.

The Tramp at their brilliant best! Their ability to layer their music is unmatched IMHO, not to mention the sheer virtuosity.

A log of Prog Rock bands say they were inspired by the Beatles. Including Yes and Pink Floyd. I love Supertramp, even though others say they are too pop for them. The Beatles were also pop.

Supertramps drummer is very under rated.

Recorded at Caribou Ranch in Nederland, CO (look up that place’s guests and the albums that were recorded there - it’ll blow you away). The crew pulled the studio piano out and dragged it out to this location, threw some snow at it, and viola - a gorgeous album cover with the Rockies as a backdrop. This song is such a masterful spectacle.

Their magnum opus. Genius composition skills.

Though Breakfast in America was Suoer Tramps most successful in sales , I prefer the Music they did before Breakfast in America , This Album was my favourite

Great reaction Lee, now you need to check out Supertramp’s longest song, Brother Where You Bound. Masterpiece by Rick Davies after Roger Hodgson left the band. Very Prog featuring none other than David Gilmour on guitar!

They have a really good DVD live in Paris 79 certainly worth a look

Even in the Quietest Moments is relatively less known that other releases, it has played times on my devices more times than the more popular albums. Superb!

Your comparison to both "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "A Day in the Life" was spot on! When you said it, I was just thinking how this came out a decade after "Day..." Indeed, the tech had come a long way, but the creativity was still alive and well. ;-]

Yes, the feeling of being at once dreaming and awake during the long prelude of the track and especially the Churchill 1940 segment - it really enters like a dream coming in. The trumpet fanfare is a great touch...I think it's close to a horn signal that the BBC has sometimes used for solemn broadcasts, but unlike Churchill it's most likely not a sample but re-imagined in the studio, and made to align with the keyboard themes that precede and follow it. But it conjures up this feeling that we have somehow passed through a gate back to 1940, a journey back in time to this near-mythical moment, a journey a bit like in Penny Lane, too.

You should listen to the title track from this album. Very beautiful.

I had to wait for each album to come out , anticipation was always at a high, then came the time to hear it, 10 hours later we were satisfied to put it away for a little bit

I first heard this back in the 80's when it was used as the theme for the news magazine show "W5" here in Canada. Ironically, they just announced the cancellation of the program after 45 years earlier this week.

When they did it live Rick was on keys and Roger was on both keys and piano.I'm pretty sure it was Roger Hodgson on piano on the album as well, its his song. A little triva - On the album cover the sheet music on the piano although titled "Fool's Overture" is actually "The Start-Spangled Banner"

Saw Supertramp 4 times. I'm convinced they had the best sound quality.

Beautiful track, expertly constructed and performed. The Churchill/ Big Ben samples are an enigmatic touch - I've never felt sure of what the band meant by putting them in there, or how they would relate to the lyrics (are they hinting that "Churchill would have been seen as a fool if he hadn't coincided with these big times late in his career"?) but it's beautifully done and they really capture the mythical aura of Britain in 1940...that moment of the song passes like in a dream.

LOVE this song by Roger Hodgson. INTERESTING NOTE: The album art features the sheet music on the piano labeled "Fool's Overture"... the music is actually the American national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. Lots of controversy over the America's role in the world. The title track of this album ("Even In The Quietest Moments") is BRILLIANT and worth a listen. Cheers!

@@grahamharley4895 It's about the notes sheet put on the piano, seen on the front cover of the album - and also headed "Fool's Overture". The Wikipedia article about the album says the sheet music there was indeed the US national anthem, but I wouldn't bet on it until it's confirmed by someone who does read music (and can check out the cover, preferably the LP cover). Wikipedia has a great deal of dodgy or misunderstood stuff.

With the nuclear arms race during that time it would make complete sense for "Fool's Overture" to represent the Star Spangled Banner... and every article and comment I've ever heard that has commented on it says it's the American national anthem. I know of "Jerusalem" as well... and it appears in the song... but we're talking the cover.

One of my favorite tunes. It is right up there with Genesis......and for me, that is the supreme compliment.

First Tramp album is almost unknown. Very good, a bit different but the groundwork was laid. Worth a listen.

A true concept album band, hard to fully appreciate any individual track without listening to the entire album to understand just how good they were. Saw them 2 nights in a row back in the 70's. Their stage show is like being taken on a trip similar to the way Pink Floyd do.

My first live concert as a teenager - before they became too pop with Breakfast in America. Epic!

Fool's Overture is the highlight of Only in the Quietest Moments, so I'd suggest finishing the rest of Crime of the Century.

Also , part of the intro music was used on a Canadian news show called W5 .

Major Procol Harum influence on this one. One of their best. Breakfast In America put them over the top, but it's their 74-77 run (Crime, Crisis and Quietest Moments) that's at the top for me.

What an epic journey, I haven't heard that in ages! If you haven't done it, you should listen to one of their shorter up-tempo hits but it's still just a banger, called, I'm Just A Singer in a Rock and Roll Band.

From about 5:00 when the tempo speeds up piece was used for the theme music on W5 news magazine. Used to be trippy hearing it during a news story.

Nice new green backdrop, dude. This is their best song - CRIME OF THE CENTURY is their best album - and BREAKFAST IN AMERICA is their most popular. FAMOUS LAST WORDS and CRISES? WHAT CRISES? are okay - - - For something similar from the same year (1977) listen to FEEL THE BENEFIT by 10CC from their very good Deceptive Bends album. I'M NOT IN LOVE - a song Paul McCartney nearly claims to have written, and did later work with the writer - is their most famous song; and very excellently and painstakingly recorded. THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE is their other big hit.

Yes, texh had come pretty fay by 1977 and it was still analog. Digital was still a few years off.

Not fussed when I first bought the album... but it's grown on me in epic fashion. Don't miss out on 'Crisis what crisis' Lee? Runs 'Crime' a close second and better than 'Quietest moments'.

I haven't heard this track for time.... Wicked to hear it again and see your face bro. Ha ha ha, Supertramp are a wicked band. I bumped into the band in a lift in the late 70's in a Cardiff Hotel before or after they performed. Heliwell's Old Gray Whistle test badge... Wild days when people were so approachable.

Definitely my favorite so far! These guys are awesome. I love the piano and the vocals so much.

This song can be heard as a personification of England (or Britain). History recalls how great the fall can be. Churchill's speech. "Jerusalem." The new "parts" Britain is playing, now that it's no longer leader of the world. It's kind of a British counterpart to Styx's "Suite Madame Blue." And proggier.

Who would have thought that one of my favorite songs ever, and one of the best Progressive Rock songs, would be about Winston Churchill? But, this incredible song really puts one in Churchill's shoes, letting us see how he was treated as a joke after the war, and yet how we also still look to him as a great leader. The contradictions in his life are sad yet so compelling, and this song tells the story so beautifully. ✌❤

Very interesting how you associated them with the Beatles. I said the same thing to a friend back in the 1980s and got an eye roll Hah! He was a know nothing. Happy to watch your Supertramp investigation. Now that you’ve done this you will have to get to Rudy, and School. And then EVERYTHING else I suppose. They are quite something. When I was living with the birth of these songs we sort of took for granted that there would be an acceleration, because it just kept coming and getting better… and suddenly not. Not saying it all went bad and nothing goods been made since. Hell no. Obviously there is good after. But the rate of evolution changed and there has never been anything that approached the rate of change that the Great Leap Forward we experienced through the 70s. Sort of like putting a man on the moon and then spending decades doing other close to Earth stuff. Shuttle, International Space Station, etc. are all good stuff. Big moves in their own way. NOT the same as going from shooting missiles at cities to landing on the moon in roughly 2 decades. ….Anyway…. I enjoyed your reaction. Look forward to seeing more.

@@denniszimmerman1279 l miss the concerts back then. The 70's was unreal. Most of the tickets weren't over $10.00 and everyone was on the road. I remember in 77 there was Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Rush etc. etc. all touring at the same time. I seen Supertramp l think it was 79. They really were an amazing band. Still don't know why they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Perhaps it's a coincidence that I just mentioned this song here yesterday. But either way, thank you. I've searched and can't find where you have reacted to Iron Butterfly. In a Godda DaVita is a song most drummers in the past were quite familiar with. There is a rare track of there's most are unaware of. It is the longest of their songs. There is a video of them performing the song on live TV for 20 minutes commercial free. It's also the second time I had heard a talk box. First was Glen Campbell using one on a variety/ talk show. ( I've searched can't find it.) The third time was Peter Frampton's Do you Feel Like we Do. A little history on The Talk Box Alvino Ray was instrumental in creating the electric guitar working with Gibson. But he also created the talk box. There's a 1944 video of Alvino Ray performing St Louis Blues giving voice to a guitar puppet using his talk box and a steel guitar. It was a demo film to be used in the video jukeboxes being introduced at the time. Imagine that music videos in a jukebox in the 40s. We weren't stupid. They just quit sharing all Technologies. "One" of my major careers early in life was in Aerospace research and development. And there are many things the world has yet to see. ✌️ 🤠🐂🏞️🛩️
