Drummer reacts to "Even In The Quietest Moments" by Supertramp

Музыка

Thank you to our supporter Robin S for this awesome pick! Supertramp is so good. Both songs I've heard from this album are just superb. I've enjoyed every track from them but "Crime of the Century" is my favorite still. I am thinking about doing the whole album but who knows... if someone requests it I will for sure do it.

This might be Supertramp's most beautiful song. "THE MEANING" could give it a run for the money. Roger Hodgson is such a brilliant songwriter. So much emotion packed into his music... and the production is so pristine. Top 5 Supertramp songs of all-time, for sure. You definitely want to check out "THE MEANING," "RUDY," "SCHOOL," "GIVE A LITTLE BIT," (was a big hit for them), "SOAPBOX OPERA" and "DREAMER."

I worked backstage at a play in a community theatre when I took 4 months off between junior college and a university. The second half of the album was used for the music before, during intermission and after the play. Will always take me back to that time. Great music. Crime and Breakfast may get more attention, but this Even In The Quietest Moments will always be my favorite.

There are solo performances that are just Roger Hodgsen and his 12 string guitar that maintains the beauty of this song. I’m a big believer that great songs can be stripped down to the basics and still sound great. This song is a great example of that. Plus he’s playing a beautiful Guild 12er that would be a dream guitar for me

  • @maraboo72

I don't know a solo version of this song but I agree to your opinion about great sounding basics. One wonderful exemple I experienced was Steve Harley who told during a concert about "Tumbling Down" that it was released on the album with orchestra and band and he and Cockney Rebel had always performed it as a band. But he had written it before he was well known and already had performed it as a solo artist in the London tube station. Now he wanted to try if it still worked when he played it alone with his guitar without the support of the band just to find out if it still worked. And did it work? Oh yes, it did. Great stuff is just great stuff.

"School", from 1974's 'Crime of the Century', is arguably the best track on that album... It segues into, and is thematically connected to "Bloody well Right", which you've already covered. You owe it to yourself to experience every track on there!

When you get to songs on the album "Crisis What Crisis?", there's a song titled "Another Man's Woman" that is phenomenal... but don't let anyone convince you to listen to the LIVE version first. Soak in that piano improvisation leading into the outro segment on the studio track FIRST, please!!!

For me, it's hard to pigeonhole the Tramp as Prog. No doubt they're all great musicians, but the virtuosity is less in the playing - there's no Wakeman/Howe/Squire flash - and more in the studio: without fail, really interesting arrangements flawlessly produced. This track is fascinating because it's basically a drone on the note D, and everything else happens around that. You should listen to Downstream, which is (I think) Rick's masterpiece, just piano and vocals, but (again) recorded SO well it's hard to credit that it's analogue.
