So glad you did black midi, though I think the track you picked didn’t demonstrate some of the chops he’s got. Check out the track “bmbmbm” love at the mercury music awards. Plus the guitarist knocks himself out!

@@znet9452 I was at this show, I'm in a blue hat and a yellow shirt, you can see me trying not to get "moshed" on in some of the crowd shots. This show went on at like, idk, 2pm after it had rained real bad and the ground was torn up. Maybe second show of the day. Everyone was shitcovered in mud and no one really seemed like they wanted to be there, or like they were waiting for a different band later on. But it was such a hypnotic show that as long as you didn't fall over--everything was real slippery-- it felt like it passed by so quickly. Seeing them is like being on a ride that you don't know how to get off of. At this point nobody knew the songs either, the record had been out like, a week? I personally hadn't even listened to the record yet, I'd just heard the KEXP session

I saw them like a week after their first album dropped in a tiny venue that was packed out the door. Only time Ive moshed to a 7 minute freeform arithmic and atonal guitar solo played over the sound of the rest of the band feeding back their amps.
Morgan simpson is a local drummer to my area he won young drummer of the year a while back total monster!!! He has a gospel background and can very much play it all. Black midi are killing it so gassed for them!!!!

Damn, really wish he would've analyzed something from their KEXP live session. Way better audio quality and Morgan really flows freer on that intimate stage. Great vid nonetheless!

Honestly as a first time watcher I’m very impressed with your ability to recognise and pick out sonic influences immediately. You clearly have a great, eclectic taste in music.
Morgan's fills are so explosive. He's really intense and I love his organic style.
I totally agree with the New York art punk vibes he’s picking up on, huge Sonic Youth/Swans circa their first projects
"whiter than the first boat off the titanic" I had to stop and subscribe just for that line

You mentioned non-traditional rhythm section so might I suggest Damon Che of Don Caballero? I always think of him as playing the percussive melody over the rhythm of the guitar/bass.

I was at this show. First time I'd ever even heard of blackmidi. Immediately sold. They're SO GOOD!
Interesting to hear what you had to say about black midi, they are a good band.. and good to hear what you said at the end.. we are all the same✌
Man, check their KEXP session.
Thanks for this. I wasn't one of the people that requested midi but am a fan and appreciate your perspective. They aren't for everyone as the rest of their album only gets more noisey and out there, but my man on the drums kicks ass the whole time.
Love the more analytical/educational sections of the video 👌🤘
Really good insights in here! I wish you would do an analyze on Slint, maybe Washer or Good Morning, Captain. Britt's drums are very characteristic and a driving force for the band's music.
I love your reaction to that first crazy Morgan Simpson fill
Great react video. Thanks 😊
One of my new favorite bands
Dude, giraffes?giraffes! The most crazy amazing drummer
Black Midi had a new album, Hellfire, come out this year. @junkdrummerTV should check it out.
Love the Chanel man
Definitely check out their KEXP performance. Trust, that's their best performance, released right before they really blew up. At least the first two songs (about 9 min total, though I have a feeling you may be too intrigued to stop watching the rest)
I love your reaction videos! If it’d ever interest you I think it’d be super cool if u did some drum playing focused lesson videos based around the playing styles of the drummers you review. Like maybe a breakdown of the concepts you see them using, explaining a path for developing those concepts, exercises etc. how to play like Morgan Simpson etc. type of thing. Also if u like Zach hill or electronic music influenced type drumming maybe check out Sean kelly machine girls live drummer.
do Greg Saunier!
I would love to see your reaction to a Lightning Bolt concert. Duo with a drummer as lead. Dude is crazy

I highly recommend you react to Hugo Stanley of Palm’s extremely idiosyncratic drumming. Just watch their audiotree live in full.
I love that you're getting into noise/math rock. Check the father/pioneer of the genre Damon Che from Don Caballero. The dude is not as spastic but shure knows how to lay down interesting/weird grooves

YESSS FINALLY
I remember seeing this band at an Ought gig about 18 months before their debut. They were opening and about 12 people hung around to listen to them. My mate and I were griping about how they just weren't up to scratch at that point because - to be blunt - they weren't. BUT, Morgan Simpson was something else even back then. He was by far the highlight of the band, to such a degree that I was tempted to go and tell him just to find a group who were more on his level. Little did I know what Black Midi were on the verge of becoming, but to me they'll always be playing catch up to Morgan's musicianship. He's definitely one of the drummers of his generation hands down.

So abstract..Primus vibes kick in as well.

Yeah, I'm a Brit and I enjoyed that ... :-)
Agree. Morgan Simpson nonstop Genius choice. Saw them at the Warsaw in Brooklyn before pandemic and we couldn’t keep our eyes off him
Anthony Barone playing Gravesinger. Really think youd enjoy it!
Check out Troy Wright playing on Plini's Electric Sunrise (live in Europe) or Every Piece Matters (video has him in it).
Drumming in their boiler room session is way better in my opinion
morgan simpson, gabe serbian, and jon syverson are my top 3 favorite drummers

This band has a thousand influences according to KZread. Most of my fave bands, TBH. Even the Fall.
"Some talking heads vibes" they have an album called talking heads I think. Or a single, can't remember
check out the drummer duo michael cavanagh and eric moore from king gizzard and the lizard wizard
You should definitely check out Tatsuya Yoshida. Hes fairly well known in the japanese underground and has played in a ton of japanese noise groups throughout the 80s and 90s. I would personally recommend checking out his zeuhl/brutal prog band Koenjihyakkei though. Theyre like Magma but amped up to 11. I am also pretty sure he was a big inspiration for Brian Chippendale but dont quote me on that :p

You should definetly react to their new stuff!
I'd love to see one to Luo
You should check out Fletcher Shears, the drummer in the band The Garden.
Morgan Simpson is LEGIT.
Do something from Deerhoof, like something from Juans basement
You should react to Paus. They're a band from Portugal. Really good drummers!
look up morgan simpson young drummer of the year 2014. he is a beast
You should check out Jon beavis from IDLES and Diarmuid Brennan from the murder capital
The guitarist has definitely been taking hints from Dr Feelgood’s Wilco Johnson!!
Yeah yo, I’d like to see you react to Earl Hudson and “Post Haste” Ma’man, Kindly
I don't miss crowds I've been living in my room for ten years
Keep hoping you’ll do a Matt Greiner of August Burns red or Matt Halpern of Periphery

Would you do Pedrito Martinez?
Lol, I love Sonic Youth😆 This is very Post Punky huh?
Defo Talking Heads influences. Not sure about Sonic Youth. I also hear Beefheart but I'm not sure they have mentioned them. They started out as a bunch of friends who love 70s jazz fusion. They have kinda fused fusion with post punk. It is complex music which feels improvised but is mostly carefully composed - just like Beefheart.

great to see you again. It would be cool to do some latin jazz stuff, eg. Alex Acuña or Horacio Hernandez.
Swans, Mars Volta and Nick Cave influences here
