I put it this way, Joey was perfect for Slipknot then, and Jay is perfect for Slipknot now. Both are incredible.

it's not the band's problem, it's the self-proclaimed 'fans' is, fans that can't accept the changes are hilarious. felt like they're the ones to prioritize with. lmao. had they thought it's not the band's/Jay's goal to outplay Joey?? i think not, that's what fans think.

Considering Max took Jay to see Slipknot when he was like 9, he also grew up with Joey's licks while learning their songs, so it was much easier for him to integrate his own style into it when he eventually joined them. Jay really is the fairy tale story of growing up to play with one of your favorite bands.
Jay surprised me a lot, and I thought the same thing: he kept the Slipknot feel but added his twist. Nice one!
“You can tell that he’s been playing since he was a kid” 😳 he didn’t start drumming until he was 14. The kid has it in his DNA

A lot of people sometimes give Jay a hard time about timing while not realizing that when he's on top of or behind the beat, its almost always intentional (or at least natural for him) to emphasize certain bits or to give a little separation between his hits and the other percussion to get the bigger sound. You see it a lot in jazz, hitting the ride early to push the song, or rock lagging snare hits to give a bigger feel... or hitting the crash early to emphasize the hit, or lagging it a little to mesh with the other instruments better. As Gandalf said, "A wizard is never late, nor is he early... he arrives precisely when he means to." This isn't prog, it doesn't need to be perfect. Of course exactly how much of it is just his natural feel of it, and how much he consciously controls I don't know, but its important, especially in a 9-person band.
Joey had no choice but to leave due to having physical problems with his legs. It got bad enough to where he had to be carried on and off stage

Definitely need a take on Danny Carey playing “Pneuma”. So much intensity, it’s amazing.

Unsainted is such a great song and the drum track is a key reason why.
I’m not a drummer but a guitarist and this was really cool to learn about
Awesome reaction man. It's nice to see someone giving Jay his credit. I couldn't really hear it that well in live version But in the music video just after breakdown Jays drumming is freaking crazy. I heard people say he was off beat. I don't Know anything about drumming but my dad is a musician so i was around music all my life and I could tell it was part of a Style and techniques he was bringing to the song. Don't get me wrong Joey is a monster drummer and gave Slipknot that signature sound but When replacing someone like Joey it's either gonna pass or fail! Joey is just that good. fortunately Jay is too. He took the already killer playbook that Joey left and fused his own style. Both are incredibly talented each with their own style. Lol about to watch your reaction to Joey, that'll determine if i sub or not!🤘😝🤘jokes! i already did!

Funny you should say that....
Yes! Slipknot did use blast beats before, especially in the albums All Hope is Gone and .3 Subliminal Verses. You can hear the greatest Joey's blast beats in the song "Three Nil". Starts with one and it repeats over the entire song. Is phenomenal.
Greetings !! you should reacting to "Guitar Center Presents: Max & Jay Weinberg " it really awesome gigs between father & son
That fill before the 1st verse is...just wow!
Jay Weinberg is a bad, bad boy. Nice Video. Nice explained.
I don't know how much videos there are of just the drummer (there's studio videos, but it contains the guitar and bass as-well) from Cattle Decapitation but I think you should look at him too. Highly underrated band imo
I'm a casual Slipknot fan, like I have been listening to a lot of their most "mainstream" songs, Before I forget, Duality, Vermillion, Sulfur, Psychosocial, etc. Also, I'm a big fan of drums, never played real drums cause I'm shit, but was good on a Rockband pro kit and I'm always listening to the drum beat at first when hearing a new song. That said, as a casual Slipknot fan, I didn't know about the drummer change that happened. When I listened to their singles that came out one after the other for their new album, the only thing I could think is man, those drum lines are simply incredible, especially Birth of the Cruel and Solway firth. I still can't wrap my head around the drum line in birth of the Cruel.... Not a critic of the old Slipknot drummer, but man, did this guy elevated their songs and the melodic complexity (?!?) they achieve. I saw a lot of critics and bad reviews on their new album, but for me, it's definitely a 8.5/10. Songs that can cover all types of moods. BTW, thanks for explaining everything, didn't know any of that and that dad Jazz reference if F-ing awesome if it's what he did on purpose. Cheers all
i love watching videos like this makes me appreciate there talent even more. i have no music talent.
what i love is that it was Max who was the Slipknot fan, and introduced Jay to them at a show when he was like 10.

@@JunkdrummerTV I think you should be safe from copyright for the most part as long as the video is "educational". But copyright laws fucking suck in general and in my opinion is antithetical to what we as artists aspire to do with our art. We make music for ourselves as artists, but the beauty is sharing that with people and seeing how they interperate it separate from your intentions as the creator. Art shouldn't be the sole property of labels and big ass corporations. It belongs to everyone including the fans and people should celebrate when their works of art inspire someone to wanna talk about it or add on to it instead of viewing it as theft. 7:02 Now THAT is the breakdown, baby.
Suggestion for future review: Sting's drummer on the song "Seven days". The original video shows quite a bit of him as it's a studio recording, it's an UNBELIEVABLE drum part, pure perfection start to finish with so many dynamics and the timing is gorgeous.

Jay is so clean. Big fan.
I’d like to hear your breakdown of their song The Negative One.
Should react to another of Jay's drumming videos this is one of his most straightforward songs imo
2:57 The first person I ever heard using this pattern in this way was Aaron Gillespie on "Breathing in a New Mentality" in 2008.
That quick question asking about if they had utilized blast beats so obviously before: a great example is older, but The Devil in I has a couple of great blast sections towards the middle/end
I dunno how the fuck I ended up on your channel but I like it
Much love! Shannon Larkin and Sully Ernas drum battle.

at 8:32 in the video you actually were wrong, jay is self taught at around 14 he first played and learned over a year period. young but not a kid and definitely a lot of advancement on his own accord, great video happy you made it keep metal drum reviews coming. \m/

Proof that all this "you need to start at 3 or 4 to become really good" is bs.
Razor knows his shit, and I appreciate that for sure, -- I'm a musician and have been reviewing concerts and albums for over 20 years. Put It like this -- my first show was Motörhead opening for Dio. Jay adds some really nasty jazzy half measure eigth fill roll type shit going on with blasts. There's quite a bit of blues fill in there which is more evident in Against Me, but he's only yet begun his career on the big stage. Kid is fucking rad and could probably play anything he wants.
