@@AndrewRooneyDrums you would enjoy his album "Ghost" or "Casualties of Cool", completely different vibes from his heavier, prog metal side.

That guitar solo is one of the best ever written in my opinion.

Devin is spoilt with the drummers he works with. Ryan is a beast, he is so precise and has knocked it out of the park with all of the work he's done with Townsend. Also it was Gene Hoglan on the album version of this song. Even when he's being subtle, he is still known as "The Atomic Clock".

True. But Devin only works with the best musicians and singers.

Devin Townsend is incredible. He has an insane vocal range from operatic to growling to screams. Amazing guitar player and he works with equally talented musicians to make his albums. Gene Hoglund, 66samus, dirk verbeuren to name a few drummers. His old band strapping young lad was an excellent metal band too.

Devin is a testament to having a vision and carrying it through. Unending quest to express and process his human nature.

especially recently: the line up (2019) is a bit aging, but the quality is "Houmpf" ! Morgan Agren, Keneally, Reuter: the cream of the cream. I agree with Andrew: as soon as you hear the first snare hit, you know it is "pocket"

Devin has an astonishing voice. His range is stunning. But the bigger issue is the you believe and feel every word.

Watching people really discover Devin is such a hoot for me. I first got into his stuff 20 or so years ago now, and have just loved it from day 1. I caught a show of his in Phoenix, when he was touring with Ryan, and I got to have a great chat with the band, and Devin briefly, while they were unloading all their own gear from their opening set 🤦. Just the coolest, nicest, chillest group of dudes

I was at this show it was spectacular the sound of the roman amphitheatre the orchestra, one of the best gigs iv ever been to! Plovdiv is a beautiful city! And a pint was like 75p 😁 go buy the bluray deluxe version won't be disappointed! Ryan was on fire 🔥 as usual

Funeral, Bastard and The Death of Music triple from the Albert Hall 2015 gig is a must for you. Sooo much emotion. You won't regret it!

My favourite guitar part EVER! Gives me shivers every single time.

This performance always gets to me. Just so insanely beautiful. And that guitar solo is just so soulful. Devin and his music are an absolute gift to the world. If we could get the entire world to sit and listen to this man's collected works I genuinely think we could achieve world peace. Once we install Devin as omnidimensional king of the world.

Please, please, please do a reaction on Devin Townsend with "By your command", Live in Plovdiv. That is a masterpiece and the drumming is of the charts AMAZING!

To be fair, the whole Plovdiv concert is great, one if the best live i have seen.

This and Higher are my two favorite DTP songs but Ryan's work on 'Ziltoid Goes Home' might be his best.

The expression on your face when Devin unleashed his signature growl is how I felt when I first heard him. No matter who he has around him as his band they are all exceptional musicians. Ryan's drumming is godlike. Using an explosion crash like a ride and two of the fastest feet I've ever heard.

Maybe it's just me but, I get a strong Pink Floyd vibe from this! Especially if you ever had the opportunity to attend a Floyd concert! All of the instruments and vocals are in perfect tune with one another and tons of drum/percussion fills! 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼

Yup it's powerful

RVP has always been a very very musical drummer. But he is also extremely technical. There are plenty of songs where his drumming is unreal because he plays pretty technical stuff while sounding very musical. I'd recommend, "Higher" by Devin Townsend live in PlovDiv as well. He has very tasteful patterns and fills in that song, and is extremely clean as well. Not to mention that the song itself is amazing. Devin Townsend is simply an amazing composer.

I love this performance. The Ocean Machine album overall is such a magical experience. Devin has recently committed to performing all tracks from all of his albums across a bunch of concerts. He did Ocean Machine most recently. In a few days, he'll be streaming his performance of his Infinity album in a few days from now. For what to see next, either Sam Paulicelli (66Samus)'s drum playthrough of Hear Me by Devin Townsend, or Gene Hoglan drum playthrough of Skeksis by Strapping Young Lad. Both have Devin as front-man, and both super intense.

Fyi: Ryan is the kinda dude who would hop on for a video interview with you. Ridiculously humble and helpful. I remember I covered Planet of the Apes when the album came out (what... 11 years ago now!?) and he randomly found his way to my KZread video and shared it on his own page etc etc such a good dude

From Terria, 2001. This is still one of my all time favorite albums. Accelerated Evolution from 2003 is also excellent. These were my introduction to his solo music when I first got into his music ~2005 (he was also in Strapping Young Lad at the time). I love all his work but these two albums are special to me. Strapping Young Lad's Alien and The New Black were out around that time. Both badass metal albums.

Love Ryan. He commented in a live Q&A ( I asked what song he would recommend to introduce his playing style) that this is the one he feels does that job. Been fortunate to watch him for side stage a few times and he really takes drumming seriously. Loved his work throughout his career with Devin, he really got to cover a lot of ground. Prog, metal, ambient, thrash, pop to name a few.

You have not heard a thing UNTIL you hear "By Your Command" by Devin Townsend from this same segment. The control of Ryan's legs on this song will want to make you go back to school. Trust me.

Such a great song! Everything from this concert is wonderful! You should check out Stormbending or Higher from this concert for some really fun drums!

The Devin Townsend Project really was something special. Devin still makes music but now with different musicians. I am heartbroken that I've never had the chance to see this band live. Fun fact: Dirk Verbeuren (the soilwork guy from a few days ago) also played drums for Devin on the album Deconstruction. I would like to suggest another (maybe two) songs from this exact concert. First ones called "Higher". It is first of all a hard song for drummers so you get to see a little bit more from Ryan and his abilities. The second one is "Deadhead". That is a song that's makes me cry a little bit every time I hear it because it is so beautiful. It has some really tasty drumming as well so you could get a kick out of that. Both are just amazing songs and experiences, I would be really happy if you chose one of them :)

Worth the wait. I'm familiar with Devin, but don't always get to see the latest stuff. The production of this performance is almost reminiscent of a pink floyd live and obviously the playing is incredible all around. Thanks Andrew!

Devin is a very special artist. Not everything he does is my cup of tea, but I have endless respect for him. I actually saw him sitting in a coffee shop in Heathrow back in 2014. He looked exhausted and noticed me staring and the look on his face was like, “Oh god, please don’t be a talkative fan.” 😂😂 I left him alone.

This is one of my favourite Dev performances, that solo was always gorgeous but this just raises it up even further. I love Ryan just for the simple fact that he had to be so many different drummers, intense folks like Dirk Verburen and "The atomic Clock" Gene Hoglan, as well as being himself. He's genuinely brilliant and I do feel for him in some of those tracks, watch him play Detox at the Retinal Circus show and see his reaction it the end.

If you've never heard Devin before then I recommend him, as well as his team. For this of course I recommend Opeth but when it comes to Devin I recommend his "Quarantine Concert" and especially "Why". If not, then his live performances of "Kingdom" and "Deadhewad" or - that's great - Anneke Van Giersbergen & Devin Townsend - Hear Me btw. Anneke is just a great singer

I was lucky to see Devin live during the Empath tour with Morgan Agren on drums!! Unfortunately right as the encore "Kingdom" started I suddenly had to go #1 really bad and basically shoved my way from the edge of the front stage to the bathroom LOL.

Please react to "By your command" or "Grace" (both live!) by Devin 💜 the drumming is out of this world!

Ryan's drumming on "Gaia" from the "Synchestra" album is amazing... as a non-drummer it sounds like he's playing a xylophone on the cymbals

Ryan’s performance in ‘By You Command’ is seriously one of the most impressive things I’ve ever heard from a drummer! Even the orchestra seems like they can’t quite believe what they are witnessing!

RVP is so good in all songs. I really love his playing in the DTP song Failure though. Great player.

RVP wasn't the original drummer but Juular is a trip, there is a great live version from Retinal Circus at Royal Albert Hall

Attempting to count to some Devin Townsend songs on the first listen can be an exercise in futility. I think it was this drummer talking in a KZread video about how Devin will have a lot of different time signatures in a row. One bar of 8, two of 7, one 8, 6, 8, 8, 5, 11... The songs are written stream of conscious, so whenever Devin feels like changing 1, well that's when it changes.

I chuckled a bit when you said Ryan's drums were almost not noticeable and in the background, in a positive way. These Plovdiv videos on KZread had an issue with being converted from a 5.1 track, resulting with Ryan being actually pretty loud compared to the other musicians. Devin thought it was a bummer, but since I like his drumming... No complaints from me!

Love your channel - This concert DVD, Devin mixed the drums too loud, which turns into a great experience for listeners that are drummers. Devin's music outside of SYL was very easy for his backup musicians in DTP to perform. EXCEPT for Ryan - Dev can program drums really well, and Ryan had to work his ass off every night. Ryan did a fantastic job of playing the parts as written - but totally putting venom and techniques in every beat. Super positive human being and a beast of a drummer. Ryan always took a selfie with the audience after every DTP show. I would guess that he has enough to wallpaper several homes. Check out Grace, from the Retinal Circus.

I can't say enough about RVP's drumming with DTP. Deceptive because it does not draw attention, but always rock solid, on time and perfect for the song. Regulator and Om from this Plovid show are bangers as well, but underappreciated (and underreacted to, hint hint) is Pixillate kzread.info/dash/bejne/fZl1z7RuY9C1ZrA.html Spot on reaction Andrew, and that surfer dude is just hilarious...

Devie rules in general. He has had some killer drummers including Hoglan and 66Samus just to name a few.

Really odd that deadhead got blocked, he/his label don't usually do that. Many other react channels have done that one too.

I wish Devin hadn't decided to disband DTP they're all amazing musicians in their own right but together they're all the driving force behind the Devin Townsend Project! You should check out Stormbending.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums another person you should check out Dan Swano he's been involved from everyone from Opeth to Steven Wilson who was/is the lead singer of Porcupine Tree which in fact Gavin Harrison is the drummer of said band... Dan Swano has has been in a ton of bands himself either it be a one man band Edge Of Sanity to the more recent Nightingale band which in my opinion is a great old school rock/metal band which have some amazing musicians in it from different bands as well...

Don't worry the whole world has been sleeping on Devy, as a British Columbian metal head it's always been upsetting to me as we have this legit musical master here and he can only really get paid to do small venues in Canada and bigger ones to metal crowds in Europe. Please spread his stuff this guy deserves to go down in the rocj and roll hall of fame yet he's niche. It's a shame. All this crew deserves so much respect.
