Dave looks at Josh with a certain intensity and maybe even … awe. Dave has always downplayed his own drumming, humble as he is, and sees Josh as just as capable, or more capable, as him.
Sooooo solid!. Absolute powerhouse. Such a good fit with the rest of the Foo's
Josh is pushing the song forward. Keep up guys
Dave has always had a very clear vision for the Foos, and choosing Josh was no fluke. Josh is a beast and has proven himself over and over

HOLY CRAP THAT WAS FRICKIN' AWESOME!!! Just... WOW!!! 😃
The original recording with Dave on drums is listed to be 174bpm. This is cranked up to 184/185 😅 I actually think this song fits this fast punky tempo more.
So, my name is Andrew. I was the drummer for Reel Big Fish. Another band from Orange County CA that made it. I had the chance to play I. This scene for a long time. We played dozens of shows with the Vandals. I was on the warp tour in Sidney Australia when Chad Sexton broke his hand. I was actually playing catch with some of the guys in 311 with our bass player Matt Wong when his hand broke. Oddly enough Dave from the Vandals asked Matt and I to go play nine holes of golf. So we went. I get back and Nick Hexum walks up to me and says. "Where were you, Chad broke his hand?." He knew I was a total 311 junky at the time. He said "JOSH" played most of the set. I was close with Tim Mahoney the guitarist for 311 at the time. It was horrible and inspiring all at the same time because here goes one of my heroes in Chad Sexton. Waited for months to watch him play everyday and all of the sudden he is gone and Jody Foster Freeze is laying it down for 311. Chad's compositions are second to none. Some how Josh just turned the heat up a bit. Got on top of the groove and drove it. He is a special drummer. When friends and family say oh dude your just as good as these guys. I appreciate the sentiment. But, I know the truth. I have walked amongst the giants. Josh Freeze, Chad Sexton, Travis Barker, Gill Sharon, Darren Pfeiffer and my replacement in Reel Big Fish Carlos De la Garza. And it did not surprise me at all that probably the biggest gig in the world went to Josh Freeze. As good as you think he is he is better. The crazy part is... there are a lot of dudes(male and female) that I can say the same thing about. God bless. Great video.

Wow thanks so much for taking the time to comment! That's fantastic memories. I think you captured what is hard to explain to civilians. How and why these players are so good. But even then some are a little extra special. Take care Andrew!
I hate that I love the feel Josh brings to the Foos. I hate that his services are needed and I’d choose Taylor 1,000 times over if I could. But….damn they sound TIGHT with Josh.

@@joesretrostuff When so many bands replace a band member, some of them make the mistake of trying to find a clone. INXS did it and failed. The best way is to honour your fallen comrade, but let the new person be themselves, like AC/DC did. They didn't try to find a Bon Scott clone, they got Brian who had his own style.

That Woow efect get...Nirvana when Dave started play with the band😁 What performance was here, great for Foo Fighters🤘
I liked how Josh on the live stream asked Dave how to approach the bridge section. Like if this was literally the first time they played these songs together, and what followed was just 2 drummers talking drums, of you know what I mean
Josh is the perfect session drummer. He also fills in for bands in Concert. He can play anything.
Thanks for your perceptions as a professional drummer. Josh Freese is making his mark as a FF. He respects the catalog, honors the memory of Taylor (with the hawk on his bass drum) and seems to have established a rapport with his colleagues. He is also a fan favorite on the circuit. Can't wait to see them in Boston soon. Cheers.
Faster high hat for the win. He walked the dog. Like Joey and Dave walked Metallica!

Josh has everything covered.
From the first split second, you can feel just how much Freese is PUSHING the band. I don't mean the tempo - which was so freakin' punk rock - I mean the FEROCITY that it brought out in everyone's playing. It's the POWER in the drumming that you could hear everyone pushing themselves to rise to. And more than ability, I bet that's why he got the gig. They've been doing this for a long time, and have explored a lot of musical directions. So much of that was driven by the relationship between Dave & Taylor. Without that, it would be natural to just lose that fire. They could easily coast on everything they've done and finish out their careers in complete comfort. Bringing in Freese shows that they didn't want to do that. Taylor's PERSONALITY pushed Dave to go to new places. Freese's DRUMMING is going to fill that same role, MAKING the band be the absolute best they can be.
Josh seems like he was in on the ground floor when this song was written... he owns it already, what a powerhouse.

💯👌
Here's Josh Freese, 50 years old, and he's drumming circles around a lot of 20 year olds out there. Gives an old timer like me hope!
The energy is incredible. I'd say the punk or hardcore roots are there. What is incredible is that he can play so many styles so well, he's recorded with Selena Gomez, Suicidal Tendencies, The Offspring, Evanescence, etc., and the drums are still great. I can't understand how he can be so versatile. Master of the drums.
I'm not sure the Foos could have gotten away with a drummer less than Freese. Nobody can slide into Taylor's slot. Josh is a rock. He's solid. He's distinctive. He's not Taylor - which is the best of all. Nobody could take Taylor's place, so they've gotta be able to stand on their own, solid, and fit in. Josh ticks all the boxes. I can't imagine the emotional rollercoaster Dave, Pat, et al. have been on.

Seeing all the guys having fun while pushing each other to a higher level was SO GREAT to see. He brings a different feel to all the songs, but to me, that is necessary. Hi Andrew, I look forward to your reaction to this video. I was at the Taylor tribute concert at Wembley Stadium. I was lucky enough to be in the front row. As soon as I saw Josh play with the Foo's All my life, I knew Josh was going to be the next Foo Fighter drummer. No doubt about it... The chemistry between Dave and Josh was magical. I've been a Josh fan for many years and he absolutely deserves this opportunity. Very interesting to hear Foo fighters songs with double bass drum haha.... Did you notice that Josh changes the ride symbal depending on the song? haha Genius!
In some older live version tempo was something like 165-170bpm and in this it was around 180-185bpm.
Those boys were not tour ready or ready for that energy, Josh "supercharger" Freese woke up muscles not used intensely for a while, Thunderous time and feel, intensity, taste (mostly) and...did I mention intensity, intensity doesnt mean loud all the time, Preach it Andy! They got the perfect guy.

What really shows that he was the perfect choice was the the reaction from the band..and if you watch the entire clip leading into that performance you'll see a brief conversation between Josh n Dave. You can see the personalities just click properly. Having the chops is one thing, personality and mentality is what makes perfect.
The Taylor tribute concert was literally Dave’s way of interviewing drummers lol
It’s a touch too fast…lol! But I love it!
Using a BPM analyzer on my phone (not sure how acurate it is) shows the original played by Dave at 174BPM, Live with Taylor 170BPM and the Josh version 182BPM.
Talk about Josh keeping the band on there toes lol
Josh brings a definite punk energy - back to Foo roots. In the show I saw, Dave mentioned meeting Josh during his Scream days. The concert I saw in May was great! A couple of moments of still getting to know each other. In all, like a new battery was put in. I also noticed that Chris and Nate were both doing backing vocals more which was pretty cool. I expected Chris - Nate was a surprise. The band seems to do better with someone who challenges them to be better. That wasn’t where they were with Taylor. I’ll always miss him. For the band dynamic, I’m glad of the choice.
Monkey Wrench on The Color and the Shape was done by Dave after Goldsmith couldn’t keep up with what Dave wanted. After the recording of the album was when they picked up Taylor.
He fits in well with Pat, given their Punk roots. I saw Josh live with The Vandals. He's got great attack.

I saw the FF play monkey wrench hundred of times but this version with Josh Freeze is just perfection 😱. I loved the way you explained it 👌. People don’t realize how high is the level of a drummer like that. So thanks a lot for the video 👍
The drums, the band, Grohl's vocals...all sounded incredible. And everybody seemed excited and happy. The Foos appear to have a good locker room. Our favorite locker roomie? Rooney!
He is more than a session drummer, he is a session's drummer, drummer. He has his own bands and has been asked to join other bands, and fill in for shows when something happens to others. The man stays busy, cause he loves drumming and loves music. To me that's what any band wants and needs.
Theyre almost looking like, slow down dude! But you know they dont want to slow down. That energy is real in the room. It brings out the best in everyone. Thats when the magic happens. Good stuff.

That was fun! I can't think of anyone else better than Josh to join Foo Fighters on the redt if their journey.
Josh Freese got the gig based upon his skill/time... but I believe primarily because of his energy. Foos play for 2 hours plus at a live gig, you need athlete level stamina to do that and smash it on every song for the entire set. That is a skill in itself and it's incredibly rare.
Josh is an insane drummer! And playing alongside a great drummer is like the energy of being next to a freight train as it whizzes by. You're either on that train or you're off that train. And you can tell it's a little unnerving at times; even when the Foos have played these same songs probably a million times.
Perfect addition. Josh also did liberation transmission with lostprophets. One of my favorite drum albums and drummers.
I would have loved to see El Estepario Siberiano audition for them. 😀
Totally agree what you’ve said about Josh. I think he’s a great fit. He’s so talented and of course the music has a different feel, but it sounds great. And the guys needed someone confident and capable but would also contribute something to the group and I totally see that. He’s not trying to sound like Taylor, and I don’t think the guys want him to. It’s another phase in the band and I really hope I get to see them live. Completely agree that not /anyone/ can jump in there. That’s absurd. Not only musically but these guys have been together for a long time…they needed someone who could fit in with them and since they’ve been friends for a long time (and he knew Taylor), I think that helped.
I love watching Josh play. The thing you need to know about him is that he grew up with music. His father Stan Freese was the Music Director at Disneyland. Both Josh and his brother Jason, who has been playing with Green Day for almost 20 years. Also, it was always fun to go down the street the Freese's house is on, there were at least 20 horns hanging on the tree in the front yard. It would always blow people's minds to see that.
Excellent choice Josh is a legend.

Hey Andrew, I'm 71 and drumming with three acts in pubs, clubs and private venues in Central Scotland. I'm very aware that I have a fault in very slightly speeding up to emphasise the music during and after a fill. I know I'm doing it and tell myself it's about dynamics. Your (this) video has straightened me out. So I see the example of Josh and your explanation and did a reset on how I thought about playing. Finding the discipline to be metronomic AND play fills is bang on mate. Thanks for the lesson!

Them geetars better keep up 😂
Josh is going to put a pace on these dudes.
In addition to all your great points. Freese comes from the same Punk pedigree as Dave, Nate, Chris and Pat. I'm going to say it, he is around the same age as all these guys so they all can relate to similar life experience growing up and being musicians around the same timeline. Finally, he's probably a nice guy. Someone you can sit in a tour bus with for hours rolling from town to town. He probably connects with the band on a whole other level. He's the perfect convenient package. Looking forward to new music with his creative input. I was somewhat hoping Omar Hakim would be the guy. He would take the Foos to some interesting places sonically. We can dream right? Great content. Thank you.

And as someone of an age who has lost several loved ones , it’s hard to move on but you have to if you want to live. I can see and hear that Josh has put a lot of energy into the Foos and has helped them re-energize. Well done Josh Freese. RIP Taylor Hawkins.
I'm going to see the Foos in Christchurch with my dad next year. He has ALS, so it's uncertain how many concerts he'll get to see anymore, so glad Josh is holding his own and set to deliver a kickass show for us!
I absolutely love Josh Freese. I don't actively listen to Foo Fighters anymore but I was so happy when I heard he got the job. The Foo Fighters really did get the best.
Josh played amazing on The Art of Rebellion by Suicidal Tendencies.

I'm huge Foo Fighters and Taylor fan. I'm still sad about Taylor... But this new version of Foo Fighters with Josh bring me happiness. Monkey Wrench drumms are Dave Grohl work (not Taylor or William), I think this way to play Monkey Wrench is more similar to the original version of Monkey Wrench.
Josh sounds like a steadfast studio musician. Taylor sounded like a garage drummer. I looked up a live clip from 2022, Argentina, and the tempo Taylor played was intense but slower and sloppier, almost garage like. Josh was butter on this tune. But he was controlled and his professional, world class chops, are just head over heels above Taylor's. It's not a bad thing because Taylor was great. This guy is world class.
Josh Freese is the goat
Great job! Andrew

Anytime, a long time subscriber, not s drummer, but a huge drummer fan. Some of my favorite drummers are Steve Smith, Tommy Aldridge & Atma Anur. Have you ever checked out Jeremy Colson. He is Steve Vai drummer.
You hit the point of his snare sound being attributed to him as much as, if not more than the drum. A few years ago a buddy and I got together with one of the upper level Nashville session guys for a jam/lesson/hang. One thing he did was open pro tools and record each of us playing the exact same beat, exact tempo, on the exact same kit, even right down to with the same sticks. When we listened back. You could immediately tell which of us was playing, even with the exact same gear, the different feel of each of us was so easy to pick out.
That solo at the end was just incredibly exciting. I'm glad that he's bringing his own style, it gives the Foos a chance to rise out of this with a new breath of life. RIP Taylor
The tempo definitely increased after the first stanza of verse. That’s when the band’s eyes bugged, because it was faster.
CRAZY HEY ,, The looks are priceless good luck foos lol
