Drum Stick Comparison: REGAL TIP and AHEAD

Музыка

[SPECS]
REGAL TIP 5BX Wood
length: 16.25"
diameter: 0.59"
weight: 57g
AHEAD 5A
length: 16"
diameter: 0.64"
weight: 53g
Recorded with ZOOM Q2n
[COMPARISON]
Both pair generate almost equivalent volume to my ears, while REGAL TIP has more low-end. AHEAD requires less power because it’s lighter in weight and has quicker rebound.
The sound on the ride cymbal differs much, since AHEAD has nylon tips (so it would be similar to REGAL TIP 5BX Nylon). The biggest difference to my ears is the sound of closed rim-shot. AHEAD sounds more “metallic” with sharp high-end.
If I want warm and natural sound, I will choose REGAL TIP. However AHEAD is enough sensitive, and has several advantages like brightness, endurance and playability (its rebound is so great!)… There seems no winner that takes all.

I've been drumming for over 50 yrs. I've used Regal Tips since they came out in the 70's. Also Promarks, but when the Aheads came out I fell in love. The shock absorption feature, to me, far outweighs any perceived sound differences. Plus, the light weight made complicated ride patterns, (a'la Neil Peart), seem easier because of the bounce. Love them. Oh, and I just replaced my 2nd sleeve after almost 30 years. They also come in a 2B for outdoor arenas. Well worth the cost.

The volume and power you can play at with Ahead Sticks is unparalleled. Also you don’t break one every set.

Been using AHEAD sticks for quite some time now. Several years. I have a few models but mostly use the Tommy Lee studio model. I love them. The only thing I don't care for is the sound (of really any AHEAD model) on the ride. There's just something about the sound of a wood stick on a ride cymbal that AHEAD just can't get. They made softer "wood-like" tips that you can get but it's still not quite there in my opinion. Perhaps they'll continue to develop their tip options? Otherwise, AHEADS are awesome. The feel and weight are excellent, for me anyway. Plus, the shock absorption is a huge plus.

@Drum Gunner Yes. I think what it is is more the fact that the AHEADS are overall louder than a wood stick. That's part of their design though. More volume with less effort.

@Drum Gunner I use the Tommy Lee studio lol. Those things are super front heavy so it give a good loud sound. I've been wanting to try the 7A's for a while now. How do they compare to a 7A wood?

@Drum Gunner That's what I love about the Tommy Lee stick. The weight and the length are perfect and I totally understand what you're saying about just kind of riding the rebound that you get from AHEAD. I've found that the Vic Firth Vinny Paul signature model is pretty close to the Tommy Lee's. So I do believe that you can find comparable wood models to any AHEAD model. But of course you lose out on all the other benefits of AHEAD. (Shock absorption, longevity etc etc). But yeah you definitely pay for the AHEADS lol. However, in my stick bag I only have AHEAD. I have 2 pair of the TL studio, 1 pair of TL concert, 5A, and 5B light rock. But, in all these years I've only used the same pair of TL studios haha. I just change the covers once every 6-8 months or so and I'm good to go. If I'm in a volume sensitive situation I may grab the 5A or 5B but usually I stay with my go-to TL studio. It's all in the stick height really, but having different models of AHEADS gives you different feels and indeed sounds. On the ride, the 5A sound way more focused than the TL.

@Drum Gunner I'm a Yamaha man. The Stage Customs sound great and their hardware is solid. Been using Yamaha stuff for around 25 years. I'm currently using the Evans hydraulic on my toms, EMAD on my bass and the UV1 on my snare. I like the dark tom sounds. But, I always mess around with different head selections. What are you using?

i have a pair of Alex Van Halen's signature drumsticks and it's amazing. Now i want to change something different. Hope Ahead'll soon make a 18" or 19" or something like that because Ahead drumsticks is more durable than wood sticks.

Well, for those of you who are most familiar with Ahead drumsticks, I finally am interested in trying a pair. Who might be able to direct me as to what pair closest matches the Vic Firth Buddy Rich sticks? I love those sticks and I've used them exclusively for the past 15 years. I still have all my old ones, which amounts to approximately 50 pairs or more. Time for a change. Time for no more digs or splits on the sticks. I think I like the idea of the replaceable parts on the Ahead sticks. What do you think?!

They produce a darker sound on the ride that's better for metal but worse for other genres.

Ahead sticks sucks on side stick and ride cymbals. Best for a hard rock or metal, in my opinion.

Wood, like the acoustic drumkit ,has NATURAL RESONANCE. Worrying about metal on metal contact or a tip flying off is something true drummer do not care for. Dont be misguided by endorsed drummers free gear is their incentive.
