    The only thing that extends the life of a stick is an e-kit. I play Vic Firth 5A American Hickory for no particular reason. Over the years I’ve played them all. I agree you’re a natural in front of a camera Kelly. Kept my attention and fun video.

    Thanks, dude! Yeah, those Extended Play one's are suspect. I have serious doubts about them. We'll see about the Ahead sticks too. But glad you liked it man. Thank you so much for watching and telling me your thoughts!!! I appreciate it so much!

    Kelly this was a super cool review. I liked how you chose sticks from different price points and materials used. I personally prefer promark sticks myself, love the nylon tips. I will say the ahead sticks did produce a fatter sound. It could be just my old ears playing tricks!! Lol! Awesome review brother and have a wonderful weekend!✌️👍👊💪😁

    Thanks, Steve!!! Glad you liked it! You know, I did notice a little warmer, fatter sound from the Aheads as well. I am too a ProMark guy...but those sticks, there's something to them. Thanks for watching, man!

    Love what you're doing with your channel Kelly! Appreciate the insight and review on this very important tool for our trade/craft! Always wanted to try different brands particularly the Ahead sticks but I love my Promark Oak 747's (nylon). But this gives me a clue how each of the ones you'd tried fared. So I guess you can say Ahead was ahead of the rest? (groan, hangs head in shame). (This was so professionally presented! BTW, it's Tommy The Cat by Primus.)

    Boom goes the mic! Ahahaha. TBH it was just an initial run. Steve Cox made a good point that he hates the Ahead rim knock sound, which I didn't try yet. And the nylon tip comes loose as in all nylon sticks. So, we'll see. But I do love the feel of them. You guessed right, but Steve was the first to answer, so technically he's the winner. I will send you a CD of my latest drumming though. Email me your address brother!

    I use ProMark for the most part, but have been using the Vater sticks recently. I bought the Power 5B extended play for 7 bucks at my local GC and I gotta say I love the feel of them. I played the Ahead sticks when they first came out in the 90s and I hated them. The nylon tips would loosen up and back off, causing that ring sleeve near the fulcrum to vibrate and rattle. Additionally, hated how they sounded for cross stick rimshots. Crazy how picky we are when it comes to sticks! Lol. Oh, and the intro was Tommy the Cat by Primus ;)

    Very interesting!!! I haven't tried the rim knock yet. Great points Steve! With all the James Taylor I play, I will eventually get to it haha. But yes, all fine points that will hopefully come out during the course of me playing them. Thanks for the awesome input. AND!!!! It looks like you are the lucky contest winner! So, seeing as though you don't like the Ahead sticks (that was going to be my first choice of gift, I have a couple other things I can give away. 1. A signed copy of the latest album I recorded drums on, "Out of Phase" by BEETERS, 2. A digital MP3 version of my uncle's (Carlos Vega) James Taylor audition tape back from 11/30/1985, 3. A MP3 version of my (Plastik Glasses) latest album, "Out of Body" and a Plastik Glasses sticker. I know it's not much...actually, in fact, if you want all three I can send them to you. Just email me: kmkusumoto85 at gmail and we can arrange everything!

    I was too. I'm gonna try other things with them though. Like using the ride and the rim knock and whatnot. I barely played that intro. So it's not a good sample size.

    You've probably figured this out by now, but the Vater sticks are hickory WOOD, with an acorn SHAPED tip (as opposed to eg teardrop, ball, etc).

    You know, for as long as I’ve been playing, I never really paid much attention to details like this. Other than the size and material, I don’t see a huge difference from one wood to the next or one shape to the next. But if I’m doing a proper stick review, I should probably be more cognizant of them lol. Thanks for pointing it out. And thanks for watching and commenting!

    I didn’t hear much different from each drumstick...I think you have to go by the feel and how they feel and sound in your hands...I don’t know what song you were playing...great video

    KMKanDrum I think it’s hard to do a fair assessment when comparing sticks...each have their own unique qualities that some might find appealing while others might not...I think if you want to compare apples to apples, you should take the same size and length of a stick and compare them against other brands...stick with either wood or nylon tips too...just my take on it

  • @KMKanDrum

    @KMKanDrum

    Yeah, it's a totally subjective thing. I get it. And I understand wanting to do an apples to apples comparison. I just thought that there are so many of those out there already. I was more looking to try to solve whether it's better to get expensive sticks or budget sticks or something in the middle. Playing wise, I thought they were all pretty similar, so I leave it to the person and their budget. Some might need to buy cheap more frequent, others might like more expensive now but they last longer type thing. I think I was trying to say that whatever their decision, there's not much difference. At least IMO.
