Mangini is a great drummer, but also, he is a great mate and man. He is always so humble and close to the fans. He expels joy, passion and love for what he does. A drum monster! Technique, feeling, speed and versatility :) Really, one of the best drummers I´ve ever seen, even before joining DT, he has been always an inspiration. MANGINI RULES!

That old truck of Mike’s was hilarious. Back when I was at Berklee, he pulled up next to me as I was leaving, leaned over to the passenger side window and said “dude, ahh you leavin? I’m runnin late for a lesson!” It was so fucking funny...his truck looked like an old hippy van meets Silence of the Lambs. “Duuude, I’m wicked crippled over heah...can you help me get this couch into the trunk?”

Mike Mangini is an amazing drummer.....period. I hear all this Mike Portnoy shit everywhere, and to be honest, Mike Portnoy left Dream Theater because he wanted to try new things and Mangini wanted to be his replacement. Both are amazing drummers in their own ways. Everyone, take a chill pill!

Exactly! If Mike Portnoy wanted to stay in DT, then he should have. You can't expect other people to put their lives and careers on hold because you want to do something different. Mangini is phenomenal, I definitely prefer his playing with Annihilator.... Jeff Waters is one of my favorite guitar players and song writers, so that goes without saying. Plus, I really like what Portnoy is doing in The Winery Dogs.

Most people don't know Mike Portnoy requested Mangini. John Petrucci has also known Mangini for a long time. Afterall he is a professor at Berklee where Dream Theater was formed. I don't understand the arguments, they're both awesome. I really miss Mike Mangini in Annihilator though, my favorite band.

Portnoy did not request Mangini. Petrucci said that Mangini came on stage and did a drum battle/solo with Portnoy and the rest of DT was like "Who is this guy? He's awesome!". And also Mangini was the first name that came to all their minds when they were thinking of Portnoy's replacement

***** is there any video of this? because the portnoy requesting mangini is what I've always heard and mangini even kinda hints at that being the case in a video i seen about him n dt a while back though nothing was 100% said regardless as everyone has said both are great.

it's just so weird. Harmonically, the snare blends so much with the pitches and range of the toms. It falls so far back in the mix. Every engineer and producer I know is aware of this kind of stuff. It must have been what Mangini wanted.
