    Omg that Perendale fleece is to die for. I love the mixture of light and dark hairs. I can appreciate the work that you put into the Merino fleece... I have been spinning some blended merino batts that my daughter made (her first blends on a drum carder) to make a 3-ply DK weight. It makes lovely, nubby yarn, but it turns out to be quite difficult to draft, so I can only spin a little bit of it at a time. I had a much easier time with combed merino top. texture will end up looking very much like yours, which I like, but it is a blend of orange, white and yellow, so the colour will look like peaches and cream. I liked seeing how you card, it is very interesting.

    Wow, that is such a great video, especially for those who are new to using a drum carder. I just got one over the Christmas holidays and was struggling to take the batt off - you see in other videos where people just grab the batt and it all comes off beautifully - not in my case. I will try to use my fingers like you and roll the batt gently off. Thanks for this. You have a great show here and I appreciate the time and effort you put into creating these videos for us! Thanks Tazhi.

    This was super fun, although you're contributing to MY…erm…fleece problem! I just had to go look up Nistock Farms and drool a bit, but NO! I am firm in my resolve to get all my fleeces scoured before any more are aquired. (I've actually been scouring a portion of super soft Rambouillet while watching this video.) So exciting to see Greene County Wool represented! I got to pick out a fleece in person last spring. I remember Charles' fleece--I was sorely tempted, but in the end I went for Athena, a dark grey. (I'm a little disappointed that the brown tips wound up diluting the grey into more of a taupe color, but I sure can't complain about the bounce! This is the first time I've ever had a fleece spring back like a sponge even while fully saturated with water when I took it out of the scour. If I ever need to do some bunjee jumping…) Your fleece-washing and sampling feats are an inspiration! There's no way I could get 20 lbs washed in a week with my setup, but I'm inspired to get a couple of pounds of this Rambouillet lamb done tomorrow. (This stuff felts at the slightest glance, so I've been taking it in very small batches.)

    Thank you for sharing part of your process with us! Just last week I pulled out my little drum carder for the first time and played around with making little 20g batts (louet jr doesn’t hold much 😂). My first fleece is a little 1.5lb mystery fleece that I suspect may be Corriedale but could be completely wrong about. But the sample spin I did with it turned out incredibly fun and bouncy~ The next time time I’m at the carder, I’m going to be trying some of your steps and see how this mystery fleece wants to cooperate. I loved watching your showcase of yarns and seeing how each breed spins up. We often hear that a fleece behaves a certain way, but seeing different examples side by side really makes it evident.

    Loved this video! How large is a carder/how do you store it (and your spinning wheel) in an nyc apartment? I was in Astoria for 2 years in a 2 bedroom and I can’t imagine storage, and even now in our small home I cannot think of where I would keep things, but my home is overrun with toys and books and since I work from home my home office is full of a lot of work equipment. I always imagine these are things people keep in workspaces but you’ve clearly fit it in an apartment so it has to be doable.

    My batt making workflow is really similar to yours! Except for the predrafting before feeding back on -- I'mma have to try that. Questions! 1) Do you always pull off in batts or do you ever diz? (Or rolag? CAN you even rolag off an 18" wide drum??) Or, what do you like to do to your batts before spinning? 2) Did you get new ink?? Your arm looks like it has one of those post-tattoo clear bandages on it, is why I ask.

  • @stitchesandstarlight

    @stitchesandstarlight

    6 ай бұрын

    I think dizzing roving off of this carder would take way too long to be enjoyable so I just pull it off in batts. I imagine I could pull off in rolags but I don’t have dowels long enough to do so and that’s what I will be looking into next - there’s a Clemes and Clemes tool called a batt lifter that I’m going to be trying to diy for my size of drum. Before spinning, I rip my batts length wise into strips, pre draft and then wind into little nests that I then store in a bowl. I pull a nest as I go, unwind and then spin. They store pretty easily if I don’t finish a batt in one sitting.
