This is super helpful! Can't wait to dive into the videos linked below your own to learn more about the history of shetlands especially. We bought four shetlands last year, and between them and the finn sheep raw fleece I picked up at a fiber festival a few weeks ago, I now have 5 bags of raw wool sitting in my study, staring me in the face.... LOL. Great to see an instructional video specifically about shetland fleece processing --- and helpful too to know you've only done this a few times and yet you already have a good sense of confidence about what you're doing. Makes me feel like it's okay for me to jump in and get going!

This was so incredibly fascinating to watch! I’ve seen this process on other videos but your video made me feel like we were just spending the day nerding out over yarn! ♥️♥️♥️ I used to dye wool yarn I found on eBay with Kool-Aid back in the day (2005) and watching you thwacking brought back memories! I definitely am the Black Sheep of my family!😂😂😂

Bless you!! My friend and i have come to the same conclusion... people who own the sheep and alpacas don't ever have enough time to seperate locks and process fleeces like you do... only people who aren't raising the critters have enough time to spend on so much processing

Thank you 😊 For sure! The lock by lock method takes soooo much time I couldn’t imagine doing it that way with multiple fleeces. I would probably keep 1 fleece and send the rest to process at a mill if I were raising them 😄 do you raise sheep and alpaca? Super cool!!!!

We have four Shetland/Hebridean cross sheep on our smallholding. I started knitting last year but I've never spun before. We just had the sheep sheared and two of the fleeces are only fit for mulch but the other two look pretty good - one black, the other moorit with blaeget markings. I've been thinking about having a go at spinning for a while and a friend has lent me one of her spinning wheels so I'm going to give it a try. I'm not sure where I'll find the time but I suppose I'll squeeze it in somehow! I'm thinking about socks maybe, if the wool is hardwearing enough? Otherwise, maybe a shawl of some sort? Hmm ...

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I've been considering getting into spinning and the idea of taking it all the way from the fleece to the finished product is very compelling but i have a lot to learn before i can even begin to consider starting.

💖 you’re welcome! Definitely start with some prepared fiber and a drop spindle that would be way less intimidating. It took me like 8 ounces of wool to get consistent with the process. The woolery sells this fiber called Heinz 67 (a blend of lots of wool) that’s excellent when you’re first starting because it’s not as expensive. I hope you start spinning ☺️ it’s truly addicting and so relaxing once you’re past the learning curve

If you're just starting out, the Falkland from RH Lindsay is quite a good deal (all their stuff is great priced) and then if you end up not liking spinning, it's great for wet felting xD I LOVE raw wool though, and think spinning your own processed wool always feels extra special

Hey! When weighing you have to count the washingbag you weighed it in before too. Weighing after washing you forgot to count that in so that 60gr is probably mostly that bag is my guess

Yes!! I was more of stickler with my first few fleeces but I don’t consider the bag weight much. They’re incredibly light.

This is so relaxing. ☺ Question. Can I spin my knitts in the salad spinner (after first wash, before blocking), or would it felt/ loose stitch definition? I know: I am supposed to be gentle to wet woolly goods, but it looked so satisfying.

Thank you!! Yes, absolutely. Things will only ever felt if you change water temps from hot to cold and then agitate. I use the salad spinner with all garments that fit.

Actually the lower the micron is the finer the wool
