As an MD of 35 years, my biggest complaint about the medical system is that every drug has both a marketing name and a completely different scientific name, many of the names are similar and get confused causing prescription errors, the side effects are often worse than the disease, the panels who decide drug guidelines are researchers funded by the same drug companies, and the Physician's Desk Reference is now too big to publish in book form, yet doctors are expected to know all of the side effects and drug interactions like walking encyclopedias.

I love my dr to bits but you’re right - 1 semester (or quarter, depending where you are) dedicated to pharmacology is NOT enough to make a dr a good reference. Go to your chemist if you have questions about meds or their uses, side effects, & interactions. 👏🏼

The Ultimate Reductionist often the brand and/or generic have prefixes or suffixes that relate to certain classes or where the drug works, but otherwise, I have no clue. But for example Namenda (brand name for an Alzheimer's drug) works on the NMDA receptors. Get it? NaMenDA
