DROP/DRAG SCALE FACTOR (Trans/Subsonic range) | Todd Hodnett from Accuracy 1st

Ғылым және технология

Todd Hodnett, the founder of Accuracy 1st, discusses drag components of the G1/G7 and custom drag models.
STEPS TO FOLLOW ON YOUR KESTREL ARE BELOW:
STEP 1: To calibrate DSF, first ensure MV has been calibrated correctly, then enter the Gun submenu, scroll down to Cal DSF… and press select.
STEP 2: Just like in the Cal MV menu, the top line of the Cal DSF screen shows the recommended range at which to calibrate DSF which is the distance at which the bullet reaches Mach 9. Calibration should take place at a range of at least 90% of the distance to the recommended range. Calibrating at less than 80% of the recommended range will result in an invalid calibration.
The second line says "Range"…. Scroll left or right to input the actual range at which you are calibrating.
STEP 3: The third line is Drop…. This is the point of impact calculated by the Kestrel based on the inputs (including WD and DoF) already entered into the Kestrel. Input the equal but opposite elevation hold to correct for the calculated drop into your scope. For example, a point of impact Drop… of 10 mils would require inputting an elevation solution of 10 mils up. Take a few shots to establish the actual point of impact at the calibration range, and then adjust .. to match. For example, if the point of impact is 0.5 mils high, subtract 0.5 mils resulting in a new Drop… of 9.5. If the correct wind values have been input, you can ignore how much the bullet missed to left or right.
STEP 4: Adjusting Drop… will calculate a new Drop Scale Factor (DSF) value which will be indicated by a +/- depending on if the new DSF value has been calibrated up or down. Pressing exist and accepting the new DSF value will automatically add it to the list of up to 6 DSF calibration points that can be created to calibrate DSF through the transonic and subsonic range of the bullet. A single DSF calibration exercise can create more than one DSF data point. If a new DSF value is created, any DSF values measured at lower Mach numbers (typically shorter distances) will automatically be deleted. All DSF values can be viewed and deleted in the View DSF…
STEP 5: After calibrating DSF beyond the transonic boundary, confirm your data by continuing to shoot at further targets. If holds become inaccurate at a longer range, run the Cal DSF function again to add a new DSF calibration point at a lower Mach number.

Thanks for the video. Great explaination, helped me understand how to use/interpret the DSF. Also zeroing your rifle, You really should use the "zero offset" to punch in that split-click. i.e how many millimeters away You are from an absolute perfect zero. Personally I use the Foretrex 701, a fantastic tool!

Necessity of Truing, this variation in calculation could also be caused by a change in ambient light at the 100yd zero and then actual target at say 1150yds is different illumination of target, cloud shadow, later in the day etc.

Good info. I wish i had a kestrel to test this stuff. I was shooting this year and found my bullet hitting high at sub sonic ranges so i would have to bring BC up the further into subsonic. And the further i shot in supersonic I would have to decrease BC. Very good info, wish i had a kestrel, so i wouldn't have to memorize or guess my BC at a certain distance.

Before AB option of the DSF, I use to use several g1 or g7 bc’s to be on throughout sson, transs and subs regions. I appreciate all of the time and effort you guys have put into the Applied Ballistics systems!!!!!! I mainly shoot two rifle systems and one of them, even with every new barrel that I install, the poi is always a little low nearing the end of transonic, unlike any other rifle system that I’ve dealt with. I often wonder if it’s possibly an axial alignment issue in this certain rifle. This really isn’t a problem but it just takes a few more rounds down range to true the ballistics to be absolutely true. I appreciate the video and I’m always looking forward to the next one.

Hi WV Here is what our in house experts say - The real value of DSF is the ability to fine-tune the Kestrel for these long distance shots. The DSF allows 6 different distances to be entered and used for the fine-tuning. You always want to enter them from the shortest distances to the longest distance, otherwise, you would overwrite the longer distances. You could do a DSF at the exact distance where you have the problem and the Kestrel would use that information to customize its results to your rifle. If you continue to have a problem, Kestrel has support staff to help you with this issue. Call in and get one of the staff members to walk you through it. Regards - The Kestrel Team

Basically 6 drop points are available. I would say to match your dope as good as possible with the Kestrel and then start calibrating the DSF where the Kestrel's holds no longer are accurate. This could very well be at 100yd already but I see problems opening at 200yds. From there on add DSF points every 100 yds or when the trajectory starts to wonder again. I have only 5700 but planning an elite upgrade when I get it back from repair.

Is DSF truing necessary if your MV is trued and you are using AB custom drag models?

Hi Kameron Since there are minor differences in everyone's setup it still may be necessary but only if you are consistently missing at longer ranges. You shouldn't have to tweak it too much with a custom curve though. -The Kestrel Team

Hello Unfortunately these are pre-recorded and due to an audio failure this is the best we have. May we suggest you turn up the volume just a tad for these because the content is definitely worth it! Meanwhile we are trying to improve our audio/visual quality with our recently shot footage. Thanks for watching. The Kestrel Team
