    You could really go either. One just opens up a couple gun profiles with the app but are the same otherwise.

    I’ve always used scope shadows to determine the optics center, especially if shooting cheaper scopes with no parallax control. It’s a great technique to check yourself so I still use it on high end scopes as well

    Awesome video....my question....I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor out to about 950 yards at my local range. If I am not shooting past that distance and past the supersonic range, do I need to true the rifle at all? Thank you...hopefully not a silly question.

  • @KestrelBallistics
    @KestrelBallistics4 ай бұрын

    It depends. Are you hitting center at 950 yards? Then you don't need to do anything. If you are off high or low, then I would do a calibration.

  • @alexmook6786

    @lBallistics Great advice....I am hitting at 950 yards on a target that is about 3' x 3'...It is hard to see where I am hitting, but we have a strobe that lights up when the steel is hit. I am happy that I can at least hit the target that far out! I am inconsistent with my hits, maybe 2 out of 4 hits at that distance, and I dont know if it is technique, or just not having the rifle trued for consistency.

    It really depends if your bullet is super or transonic at that distance. You would use CalMV for supersonic and CalDSF for trans/subsonic. I would point you to our schoolhouse: kestrelballistics.com/schoolhouse

  • @KestrelBallistics

    The Ruger model has some preloaded rifle profiles in the application. But you can certainly use other types of rifles, you just need to input the parameters manually.

    This is cool, I love that the Accuracy First guys are still trying to find better solutions for quick wind/hold formulas and its really easy to look at ballistics tables and figure out your own speed drop number and that will give you a quick and easy "close enough" hold out to 400-600yds depending on the B.C. For a good place to start take the G7 BC of your bullet and shift the decimal point one position right or divide your G1 BC by half and that will get you close. Obviously the higher B.C bullets are more efficient so you might want to try 40% of your BC instead of 50%. For example I figured out my "speed drop" for the 77gr SMK with a .177 G7 and a .376 G1 with a 100yd zero and its 1.5 from 170-280 and 1.7 280-480 and then past that it really starts dropping off to basically zero "speed drop" 600yds with that bullet at 2750 is 5.98 MIL of elevation. So my max "speed drop" calculation range is 480yds with that bullet/zero/velocity/sight height. I could split the difference and call it a 1.6 but I was keeping withing the .2 MIL error and even with two speed drop numbers and two ranges that it works that's a super simple data set you can write down and stick inside of a scope cap. If anyone has this program I would love to see how close my "speed drop" number and max effective range are to what the program says they should be.

    If you're only going to shoot close range of 400 or less yards, then no you probably don't need it. If you're intending to shoot beyond that range and setting your rifle to a 100 yard zero then yes, you'll need to record and input the conditions. It matters.

    If your impact at 800 yards was at 5.88 why did you enter 6.3 into your drop?

  • @freelancer2011
    @freelancer2011Ай бұрын

    This confused the hell out of me for a while, too 😆 I slept on it and then viewed from another perspective. So, the Kestrel predicted 6.88 Mils. She called the hit at 7.46 Mils. So, 7.46 - 6.88 = 0.58 Mils (notice how it's written near the right hand side of the pic). Then, you take the original prediction and subtract 0.58 from it. 6.88 - 0.58 = 6.30 Mils.

    Is there an indepth video on the HUD? I have several questions about the unit, but all I can find is just basic stuff. I have a 5700 Elite and a HUD.

  • @jbrumbaugh
    @jbrumbaugh7 ай бұрын

    Just picked up the HUD; couple questions. Is there an Indepth video from Kestral that fully explains how to use the HUD? Here is what I want to be able to do; hopefully you can tell me the steps I need to take in order to accomplish this. I want to be able to enter my target distances and different DOF (all targets will have a different DOF's) into my 5700 Elite and have my 5700 transmit live data to my HUD (that will be up to 30 feet from each other). The live data I want would be elevation changes and wind data / holds for different targets that I could name (Target 1, 2, etc). The targets I shoot at are much too far apart in distance to be able to just change the target distance setting in the HUD. I know how to change from a numbered target to a different numbered target in the 5700, but so far can only figure out how to adjust the distances on the HUD by scrolling the distance. I also need the HUD to be able to account for the different DOF's I entered into the 5700 and account for the impact that will have on the data I enter into the scope. In other words, I simply need the HUD to be able to fully communicate different named target info from my 5700 in a live data format to the HUD that I would be able to get if I were able to just look at the 5700. Lastly; is there a way to adjust the brightness on the HUD?

    If I understand correctly, scope shadow can be used to indicate whether your eye is centered on the optics. Please check with someone familiar with optics ray tracing.... Excellent use of a "problem" situation as an aid for / to the shooter!!
