⛽️ DRIVING ON EMPTY ⛽️ [Single Tank Challenge- Range Rover L322, Part 2]
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Running on empty! As part of my preparations for my mega one tank challenge i need to know how the Range Rover will behave when it runs out of fuel. Also I'd like t find out what sort of range is available AFTER the trip computer reads zero. Today we're going to find out in my L332 Range Rover.
A Range Rover challenge in the flavour of @itsjoel Let’s do a challenge together Joel?

Oh man what a great little back story on the L322 you are driving and what a great way to appreciate the vehicle and it's past owner. May they ret in peace.

Thank you. Ed
On a training course at Land Rover academy, the instructor told us that in the programming of the ECU there is a low fuel strategy that starts the engine misfiring to coax the driver to fill up before actually running out to save damaging the HP pump.

That might explain a few things. Why it started hesitation. Thanks Simon.
Cracking series. To this day I have a soft spot for the L322, lovely vehicles.

Glad you’re enjoying them. Make sure you watch the final challenge video. Ed
I regularly , on the open road , run 1200km with an indicated 90 km range left in my L322 3.6tdv8 with a mapped motor , that includes hooning it to overtake 5 or more coal trucks at a time on a regular basis , that is with the aircon on because it is +-42 degrees so aircon on . I have also stretched it on low feul to go , on the indicated range of 150km , around town , lots of hills , stop streets and traffic lights to obtain around 200 km , if you tickle the throttle with your big toe , you should do it with a few km spare .

Awesome Colin. We’re very ‘like minded’ I always knew it might actually be possible. Ed
Fuel filters are fun, to undoing the plastic ring is much easier if you remove the whole filter and do it on a bench. Something I would want to practice before the SHITF. LOL
Thoroughly enjoyed that Ed. I am quite new to L322 ownership. Mine is a 3.6 TDV8 so will not be quite as good as the 4.4.

Thanks Pete. It’s my firm daily driver now. Although the ULEZ expansion planned for later in the year might see an end to that. Ed

@@Back_Road_Hero F the ULEZ and Sadiq Feur Khan. We all need to push back on that nonsense.
Driving off the edge of Insanity in a Range Rover. Sitting behind a lorry on the mway will show mahoosive fuel savings using the ACC, I have see 45~50 MPG on mine. But then I got bored.......
And if Joel can get to Scotland and back about 700 miles in a 3.6 TDV8, then show them how the 4.4 TDV8 is the boss.

Thank you for your donation Neil. It’s very much appreciated.
Lol I have a confession I put a gallon of unleaded in diesel l322. Had no clue why diesel pump kept clicking unless I trickled it in. Even putting in 5 gallons took an age. Laughed my head off when I read forums as to what it could be. Yes yellow handle fix took seconds and will never get that time back I wasted in winter gently squeezing in diesel. I always felt that cold starts and cold engine used far more diesel in l322. Was suprised you carried on next day on cold start. Your results would be the minimum extra miles if Im correct as on watm engine without next day restart you may have got alot further even.
Just joined the L322 club in the shape of a 2011 blue vogue, pick up Friday! Made the mistake of driving one this morning and that kind of sealed the deal 😄. Thanks for all the range rover videos, been very helpful

I want to do the same but nervous about reliability because I drive a Honda now !! Reply in a few months let me know how it’s been

@@BruceLethal Still have it, overall been pretty good so far! Definitely not a Honda (I've owned a few of those too) but given its reputation nothing too bad (yet!). Since I bought it the only big issue has been a partially seized rear brake caliper (still drivable and now replaced) Has some corrosion in the usual spots but just surface at the moment so planning to fix that this summer, along with a gearbox oil change and some other general little jobs. They aren't perfect and require a certain mindset to own and run, but my previous car (F11 535d) cost more in maintenance over the same period and as a family/dog/tip/work/offroad car the RR is just too useful to get rid of for now!
Twice. Maybe thrice. Unintentionally
The Jaguar XF has the same system ,will not let you run oil of diesel fuel completely ,on my car the panel flashed no fuel after a few more miles it stopped , I waited possible 10 mins pressed the starter and the engine fired I heeded the warning and drove to the nearest petrol station a couple of miles didn’t risk stopping again .

Excellent, just found your channel I love these L322 videos. I’ve currently got an electric VW I do free but I’m seriously considering making the switch I’ve always wanted an L322

The L322 just does everything. Just have a look at James Martin’s latest on one (JayEmm) How’s the 3.0 update going on the VW? I’ve just cancelled our Enyaq VRS order. Ed
There's maybe an assumption that the point at which the gauge reads zero is the same every time... so you maybe had 35 this time, but maybe next time you'll have 50 miles, or only 10...
@Back_Road_Hero

Maybe. But the test was really to see what the indicators were when getting really low. Ever car might be calibrated differently but at least there’s a chance of an extra ‘secret’ gallon. Ed
@JohnBaxendale

@@Back_Road_Hero Yup, for sure! Mine has ran out still showing fuel on the gauge and without any sort of hesitation, which is odd considering the comment from the LR mechanic in your other video "two gauges and if they don't agree it error's", mine certainly didn't do that... I think the one thing that's consistent with these vehicles is... they are *never* consistent :)
Stangely, mine will show zero on the fuel gauge due to sensor wire issue, which there is a tech bulletin for and it will run at full power, others it seems go to restricted performance.
Looking forward to the challenge. Could call it mission impossible..Lol

Thanks Gordon. Futile perhaps but all in a good cause. Ed
The old flap reset tool. When I got mine I found the flap was in place due to the garage filling using a can, even now do you notice these beasts are finickity on the hose at the pump? MIne fills best with the hoe held upside down .
According to your info , in my car I can get 1376km (860 miles) before dying , I would say you may do better having the 8 speed box

Hi Mark. I was hoping to do it over the next few days but sleeping in the back of it on these cold nights might be too much. Also the snow in the north of Scotland might be an issue. Probably the spring. Thanks. Ed
“It’s Joel” did a similar hypermiling journey on a tank of fuel, not sure exactly how far
