    Reminds me of this joke - A senior citizen was driving down the freeway when his wife called his cell phone. "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Route 280. Please be careful!" "It's not just one car," said Herman, "It's hundreds of them!" So, have a look at the screw, if all the bits are wonky... :P :P

    Ok, some bits are better than others no doubt, but what you forgot to mention is the screw itself and how well the manufacturer has made the drive profile in the head of the screw. The fit is relative to both of these factors. Maybe your next video can focus on the quality of steel the bits are made of and how well they wear. Thanks for your video.

    From experience the Wiha bits are made from pretty good materials, Wira better still. Also one of the biggest factors to bit wear is their fit/ accuracy . The worse the fit the more the movement between screw & bit and therefore more wear. With Phillips and Pozi bits a less accurate bit means a higher chance of the bit slipping and stripping the head. Wera are well worth the extra money.

    Agreed. I saw the Menards "grip fast" box and wondered why there wasn't a GRK bucket there. Great video, though. In my experience, some of the bigger money bits, Snap-on phillips specifically, they last a while and don't round over but due to the hardness, they shatter when in an impact. I will definitely try the wiha bits and just hope, depending on the holder, they don't stick in the screw head instead of the holder. That's just annoying.

    While I don't doubt the end results. I question the use of a screw of unknown TOLERANCE as your baseline. As others have stated the Screws are also a major variable! There may well be a screw that would match each of those points. That being said I have see bit failures as a much bigger problem.

    You should check out Wera bits with holding function (867/1 Z TORX® HF). They are slightly tapered and will seat into a torx screw so that it actually holds the weight of the screw as if it was magnetic. No wobble, easy starting. Best of all they are only 50 cents each. I don't get all the negative comments, sure every screw is different, but all of them wobble on the driver, any solution is welcome. I used to hate torx wood screws until I found those special holding function bits.

    There is a big difference. I’ve broke most bits while driving with my impact. I started using the Milwaukee bits and haven’t busted the tips yet. I use my impact all day long as I’m a remodel carpenter. Heavy to light. And for the record, DeWalt bits suck. And you should only use an extension or bit holder as you call it is when it’s hard to reach into corners.

    I myself also.prefer the Milwaukee bits over the Dewalt bits; but Dewalt does make a plain-Jane, chrome finish bit-extension/holder that is by far the best one I've tried: it has the strongest magnet, and a built-in C-clip, together they grab the bit so tightly that sometimes I have to grab the bit with pliers in order to pull it out! If you use this Dewalt bit holder, the bit will "never" be left behind in the screw head after you drive the screw and bull the tool away!

    Wiha has special bits for that purpose. They are a little more fragile but still work at quite an angle. For normal driving these bits make a lot of difference, the bit doesn't jump out and you only have to hold the screw until it gets going. That means you can drive them quicker, because you can reach for the next scew. Also you don't nearly need as much pressure on the drill/impact, which is more comfortable, but also aids working in tight spaces.

  • @ChimeraActual
    @ChimeraActual6 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the test, Wiha looks like a winner. But I need to point out that you're going to have some error from that three jaw chuck, and it won't be consistent, every time you re-chuck you'll get different numbers. You would need a four jaw and a way to center the bit, or better a collet chuck for hex. Don't know where you'd get that. A better test might be holding the bit horizontal in a hex fixture and measuring screw drop angle on all six sides. Do that for say 10 bits of all makes. That would tell you accuracy and consistency, but not concentricity. Given that it's going to be used hand held, concentricity is the least of your worries. Oh, and test for longevity while you're at it. Back in the 80's I purchased some phillips bits meant for aircraft production. They were serrated on one side and very closely matched to the screw. If you were careful you could hang the drill by the screw and it wouldn't let go.

    Additional Info: There are many screw heads that look like they're Phillips, but they are not. You have to match the driver bit to the screw head. Besides the Phillips, you have the Frearson, Japanese Industrial Standard, Posidrive, and mealy a dozen others. They vary on the angle of the wings, depth of the bit and shape of the bottom of the screw slot.

    Dan Burch, I fix old audio equipment for a living, most of it Japanese-built, been working with and around audio gear for almost 50 years, and yet I only found out about JIS philips screws a year or so ago! Pozi drive are quite obvious when you look at the head of the screw (if you know what to look for that is), but JIS screws aren't so obvious and do not always have the identifying dimple punched into the screw heads; and most people arent even aware that these variant version screws exist!* The Milwaukee shockwave bits generally work quite well for use with JIS screws camera and the skinny portion near the head means that you can more easily get in and around tight spots when you're dismantling or reassembling equipment. If you file off the rounded bottom of the Milwaukee driver bit just a little bit they fit even more deeply and tightly to the JIS screwheads. * owners of Japanese motorcycles purportedly have stripped out a lot of carburetor screws because they weren't aware of JIS screws!

    The one thing that separates tools from the hobby to professional and upward (specialty tools) is the elasticity of the tool. More elastic means it will deform more under load and the contact point will deform rounding the bit or the bolt/screw. So top tier tools made for very high loads are usually very brittle made out of tungsten/wolfram and will not deform even under very high loads. (ever seen torx specs used in hydralics? like injection pumps and such.. one bolt that keeps the relief valve is torqued at 800Nm and it's only an M12 or something with e-torx head - here the average pro tools like snap-on will get destroyed while the special tool made out of tungsten will prevail. ) Same thing with pro shop tools like snap-on vs hobby grade tools.. where a tough bolt in automotive will obliterate hobby tools (because the tools were never designed for such high loads), but will go fine with pro tools because they are designed to deflect less for that torque, and also they are designed for those higher loads in mind. (but not designed well enough for even tougher bolts as mentioned above). The good thing is that a high grade tool intended for very high loads will work just fine with low grade bolts and nuts.. so if I could afford i'd buy only tungsten sockets and bits.. but they are very expensive and usually just a one specific tool for a specific bolt somewhere and not a full set... so I'll settle for pro tools like snap-on or hazet or facom or stahlwille (being from europe, snapon is just a rarity here, and imho inferior to hazet or stalhwille). Ever seen how bits wear and fail? most hobby bits will just wear and look shiny and rounded and twisted if over-torqued at some point while the pro ones will look neat and crisp and when it fails it will shatter.

    I gotta agree. I have several Bosch bits. The new ones still in packaging are solid black on the tips, absolutely no bare metal. The one at the beginning of this video has bare metal showing on the tip. Generally, I find my Bosch bits are just fine for most work, and other kinds I have fill out the rest of my needs, but I don't use an impact drill. Impact is fine for some things, but not for the kind of woodworking I do. I don't recall the last time I tried to drive a screw one-handed into a hard surface . I always drill a shallow pilot hole. Or I use a sleeved bit to hold the screw head and reduce wobble a little. Once the screw is started, excessive wobble is gone anyway. The measured runouts on these various bits is meaningless trivia. Your hand and arm wobble many times more than the runout measured in ANY of these tips. What is meaningful is having a bit stuck in a screw head because the bit was not milled properly, either slightly too large or bad edges, or because screws were not formed correctly.

    Speaking for all electricians you did not test Klein bits and personally I find their screwdriver's profile to be best. Also most would agree that it' 50/50 meaning the screws you use come into play. Personally I'm screwing a lot and here's what I learned. 1- No chuck is perfect and no bit 3" or longer will stay perfectly straight. Hence the wobble. 2- Magnetized bits are terrible on all brands despite what they claim, rubbing it on a magnet will do more than those little devices they sell. 3-Toughness Milwaukee will outlast dewalt ryobi rigid as i put my weight on the drill taking out drywall screws with concrete in them. The answer to these 3 problems for me is the cheapest Dewalt 3" drill bit holder. because its thick its hard to bend it, it has a magnet in so it stays magnetized and can pick more screws than any bit. If used as prescribed using 1" bits it's very straight. Side note, it's the one with the picture of channel locks on it because the fit is so tight you need them to take it out. My apprentices are always bewildered when they see me take it out with bare hands lol RAWRRR

  • @goodun2974

    @goodun2974

    4 жыл бұрын

    Bakalaka, thumps up for that last paragraph: the Dewalt bit holders/extensions are *awesome*, the magnet is the strongest I've found and the c clip grabs the bits so tightly that its virtually impossible for the bit to remain stuck in the screwhead after you pull the tool away. I generally prefer to use a 1.5 or 2" bit with these bit holders, they're easier to grab for removal from the bitholder. The Milwaukee shockwave bits are great but they do lose some of the magnetic pull provided by the magnetic bit holder due to the skinny round section of the bit shank.

    I would disagree, I have used most if not all types of screw head types over the years and the #1 robertson/square drive had a substantial amount of cam out and slippage and would consistently break screw heads. the #2 which was the most common for all purpose screws and cabinet screws would also cam out more often than not, although better than Phillips by a wide margin the best these days is Torx. We use mainly GRK Screws because of their quality- Canadian made by the way and a few other brands. The only issue we have ever had is with their trim screws and the T-10 bits snapping off. all others seem to last for a long time and I have yet to break one of the larger bits or have it strip or cam out consistently.

    Philips screw heads were originally made for manufacturing to intentionally slip when an abundance of torque was applied or in other words too much torque applied. The Philips X impression in the head is tapered for this reason. The Robertson head is far superior in retention of the bit as it has a deep impression in relative comparison to the Philips head. The Torx screw was developed as a band-aid solution to get around the Robertson patent to develop a screw head that can receive a lot of torque. It has been developed though into a very good drive head. Bit fit to screw is still critical for preventing screw rounding out though.

    Torx plus are unique to Spax with their little proprietary button on the tip of the bit. That said, I was wondering how these would fit. Starting to prefer spax over GRK even if the GRK are slightly more expensive with a superior coating... might switch back to spax unless I get one of these bits to address the grk play issues I’ve had starting screws in even soft woods. Even the grk-specific bits have a bunch of play starting their holes.

    Can you compare the german brands to Snap-on? Im really curious to see how they compare, especially the impact rated bits. My only knock on the terminator impact bits is that the 25 mm bits are very finicky with bit holders that use a friction ring, including Wihas 1/2" to 1/4" impact bit adapter. I found that it works well with Wera's impacktor bit holder, DO NOT use these with the Milwaukee shock wave bit holder with screw the guide sleeve as you will not be able to get it out

    @@DiligentDave1966 The Maxxtor and Terminator Blue(TB) sets are about the same price now. I picked up the 50 pc set (76885) for $35 from ACME Tools, and it only has 13 Phillips bits. The 40 pc TB set has 10 in it for $30, so it is about the same percentage. They both claim to last 120x longer, so I am curious how they really differ other than the color of the plastic on the bit. You'll have get a set to do a comparison test to see which is better 😉 I also like the fact that neither of the sets has too many of the 1in bits that take the adapter to work in an impact driver: too much more added wiggle. I am with you concerning the T25 vs Phillips fasteners, but then again, the Phillips were originally designed to strip when the desired torque was reached on the assembly line: it saved money on torque wrenches, I guess.

    @@DiligentDave1966 WOW, that is a killer deal you got for the bits. I was just kidding about the testing: I know how expensive these things are. I just purchased the Maxxtor last week online, and the day after I placed my order I saw the Terminators for the first time, which got me wondering what the difference was between them. When I saw your post about them, I thought I would ask. From what I have seen on these bits, which hasn't been much, they will actually be less expensive than team Red or Yellow in the long run, as they don't break or wear nearly as easily. I forget which video I was watching, but the creator pointed out that in the Red and Yellow sets have many multiples of each bit, because they are cheap garbage that doesn't last. However, with the ser gut German bits that is not the case. Now it is MY turn to apologize for being wordy: again. Have a good one.

    rjw Yes, the square drive bits fit, (and they probably are square drive head screws, not true Robertson brand) but the Robertson screwdriver combined with a ‘true’ Robertson screw is something quite different. The Robertson is slightly chamfered around the edges, and tapered nearing the bottom with a diamond shape at the bottom, it actually ‘grabs’ hold of the bit! www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/youve-got-to-use-a-robertson/article1024050/ But thanks to the stubbornness of both P.L. Robertson AND Henry Ford they mostly stayed up here in Canada and not long after, Phillips was the screw head of choice for Ford, and we all know how much power he held at the time.

    Anyone see a problem with these super tight fitting bits? Particularly in tight fitting spaces, and/or where you have to extend to reach to? You’re going to need a bit per screw, cause when you pull back after fastening the screw the bit is staying with the screw, or flying off and ending up where u ain’t getting it. It’s super annoying, slows down your work, and you lose more bits than you find that way.
