Drive Modes in Detail - EOS R5/R6 Tip 37

Ғылым және технология

Modern cameras can deliver higher frame rates than ever before, but they come with some confusing limitations.
In this video, I dive into the details of the EOS R5 and R6's drive modes. These including self timer shooting, single release mode, and all three continuous modes; continuous low, continuous high and the new continuous high plus.
Finally, I look at some basic performance testing to see how the fastest drive mode, continuous high plus, to see how much performance is lost when you can't meet Canon's stated conditions.

Mr. Jason... I must conclude there is little to none that you don't know about the Canon EOS R5... I'm convinced that you help many people a lot... I AM a guide/manual reader... but must admit, you're a BETTER reader! Compliments for all the Tips!! Wow! Take care! Greeting you from the Netherlands... I shall spread the word :)

Thanks for this. I have a newish R6 and I'm trying to find my way around. With this video I now know the various ways to quickly get myself into the self timers.

Hi and BRAVO for this great video on the R5 - I just found out that another factor is the "dual pixel RAW" must be disabled in order to shoot at H+

Holy cow, was that complicated or what? LOL Thanks for the explanation that Canon does not adequately provide.

Hi Jason. Thanks for this serious testning and information. By the way, I own a Canon RC-1, and with this remote, you can chose between a 2 seconds delay or simultaneously firing. Best Regards, Jan

I vaguely remembered that being the case, but I didn't mention the RC-1 because, AFAIK at least, Canon doesn't make it anymore. ☹

Hi Jason. I like the way you dig in to the details of the functionality of the EOS R5. Really appreciate that. I did one simple test on the difference between the H and H+ drive mode on my R5 combined with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 lens. With this combination I do get the blinking white H / H+ with Electronic 1st-Curtain selected. The manual says approx. 4.9 and 6.8 frames/sec for respectively H and H+ drive mode. The results of my test gave 5.2 and 6.6 frames/sec. So the combination of camera and lens is capable of 6.6 shots/sec but in the H drive mode it only gave a result of 5.2 frames/sec. The 6.6 frames/sec is better than the 6 frames/sec with a white H as it says in the manual. So why do I get a white blinking H and only 5.2 frames/sec while the camera is capable of 6.6 frames/sec? Is the camera doing something different in H mode compared to H+ mode (shorter focusing times or something)? I don't need the high frame rates with this macro lens and I do get green icons with all my other lenses so there is no problem for me but I think it is just interesting to know what is going on. As always: Answers lead to even more questions. ;-) Best regards, Pieter

H+ does several things differently from H. For starters, it runs at 13-bits instead of 14, so that's 8% less data that has to be transferred from the sensor per frame. Additionally from what I've seen, H+ always uses DPAF's capability to focus with small apertures (f/22, and potentially smaller), to focus stopped down instead of with the lens at it's max aperture (I've seen this with H as well in conjunction with high speed display being enabled, but it's also not consistent either, sometimes it'll stay stopped down other times it'll open up focus and stop back down); that also cuts out some cycle time.

Hello Jason, setting up for exposure bracketing and wanting to trigger the shutter with the timer release, I could not see the way to have continuous shooting selected with the timer release selected at the same time. Is this something simple that I overlooked. I could do this with my 5mk3. Cheers.

For the 2 and 10 second timer release modes, you don't have to worry about setting the camera to continuous drive as it will shoot the whole exposure bracket automatically.

@@PointsInFocus Yes I did discover, or actually it did occur to me upon reflection, that this would be the case. On the tripod I used the two second release , later in the field I handheld and, with no timer, after pressing the shutter button there was a momentary pause and the bracket was all taken. But later, settings changed and on single shot drive mode just one frame was taken. Changing to a continuous mode all the shots were taken and then more, and without the initial momentary delay. Thank you for your reply and it will be a bit of experimentation to work out all the different ways that the system works for the taking of brackets.

For some reason, my H and H+ modes are inaccessible. Not sure why. Using electronic shutter, Manual mode, 1/1000 shutter speed, LP-E6NL batter fully charged, R5 with an RF 100-400 lens....

I'm still thinking about this one. I'm not aware of anything with the 100-400 that locks out H and H+ modes. If you switch to another RF lens but don't change any other camera settings do you get H and H+ back?

honestly, you have to go into more detail on exactly how to get through the buttons. the buttons on the r5 are so complex.

Way too much talking. Not demonstrations. My head got tired. How do you set up continuos mode?

  • @PointsInFocus

By setup continuous mode, do you mean switch the drive mode to it? If so, you can hit the Q button and it's the second icon up from the bottom on the left column, or you can use the M-Fn Button and you'll find it in the second spot from the left in the default menu. If you mean change or limit the frame rates, that's not possible on any of the EOS R cameras.
