    It would be useful to see some examples of how these can be used. A short clip showing how the multiple exposure is created and then showing the end result

    Thank you. I've read the manual and watched other videos, but you are the only one that really explained the "blending" modes.

    That was great thanks. Last time I tried this the photos looked awful. I’ll give this another go now. It would be interesting to compare a 10 stopper ND with this method. Have you done this yet?

    I don't have the patience to get to 10 stops. You'd have to shoot 1024 exposures for that. Most of the time I end up combining averaging with a ND filter, usually a 2-6 stop one. The biggest problem with pure averaging as a replacement for ND, is that ideally you want a rolling readout, not discrete frames. For "random" things, like running water or clouds, the inter-frame time isn't really a problem, but for less random things, like a car/boat/train moving through the frame, the few ms between frames leaves unnatural looking gaps.

    Problem solved. The Con R5 can’t take multiple exposures with the new RF 14-35 F4L lens that I was going to use anyway, “Not available with the attached lens”. I have the latest firmware on all. Couldn’t save to custom C1 - C3 either with the 70-200 that did work. I like to setup camera prior to going out so this feature not so good after all. I don’t have the patience either! Thanks for quick reply. Merry Xmas

    Woah! I guess even I can learn something from these videos. I didn't even notice that warning in the manual (that ME is not be available with some lenses). That's rather annoying/frustrating, and given that it doesn't work with the 14-35/4 is really disappointing as I was strongly considering that lens over the 15-35/2.8 but the 15-35/2.8 apparently doesn't have that limitation.

    Beginner question - as more pictures are stacked does picture (file) quality degrade? In particular if you start with the first image being a previously stacked image?

  • @PointsInFocus

    @PointsInFocus

    Жыл бұрын

    Not due to the stacking process. Quality can drop if you're averaging and your alignment isn't consistent as you're essentially blurring the image.

    How can i put the settings when i want to capute a quick movement? Like a skater in a halvepipe? That way i have to shoot in a burst-kind-a-mode right? How do i do that? (Just starting a course and trying to figure this out… btw: thanks already for the videos!)

    I think what you're looking for there is the continuous drive modes (probably continuous high or high plus in your case). I've actually got a video coming on this in the near future. You'll find the settings on the quick control menu, 2nd up from the bottom on the left column, or in the menu that comes up when you press the M-Fn button.

    Unfortunately, no. The best you can do for quick access is to add the multiple exposure setting to a my menu page, so that you don't have to dig as much for it.

    I am unable to select an image on my r6. It is set to mechanical shutter. Do you know of any other settings that would restrict this option? Thank you for the thorough information.

  • @PointsInFocus

    @PointsInFocus

    Is the option simply not there, or are you just unable to select any images? Ont he R5 and R6, you can only select raw images for the starting image of a multiple exposure set. If your card only has JPEGs/HEIFs on it, then you'd be able to hit the button but no images would be selectable. If the button is grayed out, you have to enable multiple exposures before it becomes available. Other than that, I'm not aware of any other settings that would prevent you from selecting a starting image.

    I have an r7 and when I take a multiple exposure it saves automatically as a JPEG even though my card is set to c-raw. I’m learning about multiple exposure and it’s def not easy. Not sure which setting to use average/dark etc . My big question is , I’ve seen people CHOOSE a background image from their existing photos on the card but mine doesn’t show any available. Is that because the card is set to c-raw?

  • @PointsInFocus

    @PointsInFocus

    Unfortunately, the R5 was the last Canon camera where the multiple exposure mode worked in raw. All subsequent cameras, including your R7, will do the multiple exposures in JPEG. While it's pure speculation on my part, it's likely that this change was made due to the increasing dependence on lens distortion and aberration correction in mirrorless cameras. As a result, on the R5 there are many lenses where you simply cannot use the in camera multiple exposure mode, where as on your R7, you don't run into this problem. As for using an initial image, reason you're not seeing any is because you normally shoot in raw/c-raw, and the multiple-exposure system is only looking for JEPGs on your camera. That said, if you already have an image you want to use as a background, you can convert it from RAW to JPEG in the image review mode through either the playback menu or the quick control menu in review mode.

    @@PointsInFocus thank you for sharing that valuable information with me 🙌 I think I’ll get another card as currently only using 1 . Then have one set to JPEG and the other to c-raw . That will hopefully make things easier. Meantime I will try converting a raw to a JPEG on the playback menu (never done that ) Yesterday when playing around with it again , I was using adjective setting and my multiple exposure were too over exposed , it was looking a mess . So what are the rules when doing multiple exposure? I’m doing something wrong . Only successful one I’ve done is a headshot against a white wall then 2nd shot was flowers as the overlay. I could see nice contrast . ( hope I’m making sense )

    If you're using the additive mode, then you'll need to adjust the exposure of each image to be darker as you shoot it. For 2 images, you'll need to reduce the exposure by 1 stop, for 3 by 1.5 and for 4 by 2 stops. You'll need to do that using exposure compensation as you shoot them. Don't get frustrated, in my experience, there's no short easy "do this" kind of answer ot the multiple exposure stuff. You'll have to play with it until you get a feel for what works in what situations.

    Multiple exposure only works on a handful of lenses… it’s rather disappointing that it doesn’t work with every lens.

  • @PointsInFocus

    @PointsInFocus

    Жыл бұрын

    It is, and using all lenses is something that newer R series cameras support, but at a cost. The R5 uses raw images for the multiple exposure process. This is good since so they preserve the maximum image quality. However, lens distortion correction can't be applied to the raw data. On newer cameras (starting with the R3, but it's the case on the R6-2, R8, etc.) multiple exposure images use JPEGs, so it works with all lenses but you don't get the benefit of the raw image files. Unfortunately, the underlying problem is that Canon (like most of the rest of the camera industry at this point) has decided to rely more heavily on software lens distortion correction instead of building every lens to be distortion free. Since distortion correction can't be applied to unprocessed raw data, functions like this get the short end of the stick when it comes to lens support.
